Manscaping: Who does it and why?

Warmer weather is near (promise), and that means we’re going to need to start prepping for smooth legs and clean bikini lines. But, ladies aren’t the only ones who need to do a little prep. Guys no matter what your mother tells you, you need to manscape! And if you’re feeling alone in this endeavor, you’re not.

A Gallup poll of men’s shaving trends found that 1 in 4 men aged 15 – 34 shave below their necks. The majority of these men (78%) shave at home, in their bathrooms … preferring to take care of their business themselves. Why does men’s grooming, or rather, manscaping continue to grow in popularity?

According to the Gallup poll, most men want to improve their appearance (54%) or sex appeal (41%), and an overwhelming amount agree body shaving leads to better health, hygiene (37%) and even sex (22%). Ladies, apparently we’re far from the only gender concerned with our appearance.

The Makeup Examiner wasn’t terribly surprised with the Gallup poll findings. However, I was surprised to learn that despite the amount of guys manscaping at home, there aren’t many men’s grooming brands that cater to this very specific grooming need. Edge Shave just launched Edge Body ($3.99), which is a shaving cream designed specifically for manscaping.

Edge Body shave cream is formulated with antioxidants, vitamin E, and aloe to help protect sensitive areas from razor burn and irritation. It also has a thicker cream versus foam consistency to adequately coat sensitive skin and prevent the cream from rinsing off in the shower, where apparently most men like to manscape. Edge Body comes in two scents, Edge Renew and Edge Recharge.

In conjunction with the March 2013 launch of Edge Body, Edge introduced Edge Ultimate shave gels ($2.99). Edge Ultimate is a 6-in-1 product that soothes, moisturizes, protects, cleanses, softens and is scented. Edge Ultimate shave gels are available in three scents: Edge Ultimate Achiever, Edge Ultimate Contender and Edge Ultimate Magnet. Both Edge Body shave cream and Edge Ultimate shave gel are available at CVS.
