BB and CC Cream Break Down

Probably the biggest beauty trend of the past year was the introduction of BB Creams and just as we were figuring out what a BB Cream was, enter … the CC Cream and a lot of confusion. But in all honesty women that The Makeup Examiner has spoken with are still unclear as to what a BB Cream is. So here is a very simple explanation of what both products are.

BB Creams, referred to as both Blemish Balm and Beauty Balm, have been popular products on the Asian skincare market for years. BB Creams are very similar to tinted moisturizers, but are made to moisturize, prime, reduce shine, protect and cover minor imperfections. CC Creams (Color or Corrective Cream) contain all of the benefits of BB Creams, but go a step further will the promise of correcting skin issues such as acne or dark spots. Although in my research, I found a multitude of BB Creams that help with acne.

The bottom line between the two products, if you have generally normal skin then you should easily be satisfied with the results of BB Cream. But if you are looking to correct your complexion, try a CC Cream. Of course never one to be satisfied with what I’m told about a product, The Makeup Examiner gathered up BB Creams (and guinea pigs) from prestige to mass and put some top BB Creams to the test. Check out the list and hopefully, you can find one that fits your budget.

  1. Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm Multi-Benefit Skin Care Makeup BB Cream, $34, is available in 6 different shades and as with all Too Faced products, it is cruelty-free. The Too Faced BB Cream formula is slightly heavier than tinted moisturizer and delivers a very dewy look to the skin.
  2. Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream from Garnier has a fabulous price point of $10 and delivers wonderful coverage. But, Garnier has a rather limited color selection of Light/Medium and Medium/Deep.
  3. Clinique Age Defense BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $37, is available in 3 shades, as The Makeup Examiner found many BB Creams are. Clinique’s BB Cream is free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates and is soothing to irritated skin.
  4. CoverGirl CG Smoothers BB Cream, $8.50, is available in 3 shades and is lightweight, just like a tinted moisturizer. CG Smoothers, SPF 15, offers the same coverage as a tinted moisturizer, but all the added benefits that you’d expect from a BB Cream. Great price point and perfect for those balmy summer days.
  5. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35, $39, is availed in 5 shades. I really loved the feel of this BB Cream, as it didn’t leave my face feeling greasy. The coverage is decent and Smashbox’s formula is a little heavier then a tinted moisturizer.
  6. Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream is the new kid on the block having just made its debut in January 2013. Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream, $9, contains SPF 30 and is an amazing BB Cream. With a perfect combination of a lightweight feel and great coverage, you can’t beat the price point and performance.
