Courtesy of Hourglass Cosmetics
Hello beautynistas! Hourglass Cosmetics showed up on The Makeup Examiner’s radar last June with my introduction to Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation and the following month I was wowed again with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder and Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick. Now, Hourglass has introduced Ambient Lighting Blush!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush is available in six shades:
  • Radiant Magenta - A golden fuchsia blush combined with Radiant Light for a summer glow.
  • Mood Exposure - A soft plum blush fused with Mood Light to brighten the complexion.
  • Diffused Heat - A vibrant poppy blush combined with Diffused Light for a subtle halo effect.
  • Ethereal Glow - A cool pink blush fused with Ethereal Light for a moonlit luminosity.
  • Dim Infusion - A subdued coral blush fused with Dim Light to add warmth.
  • Luminous Flush - A champagne rose blush fused with Luminous Light to evoke a candlelit glimmer.

If you’re unfamiliar with Hourglass Cosmetics, let’s review a few things about the brand. Hourglass Cosmetics are free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nanoparticles and gluten. Plus No Animal Testing! Always a great start with any beauty brand. But, does Ambient Lighting Blush ($35) do anything special?

To start, the science behind these blushes is rather interesting. Each begins with a base of Ambient Lighting Powder, which is swirled together to create a blush that delivers a really beautiful touch of color. Yes, Ambient Lighting Blush offers buildable coverage. But for me, I like a healthy kiss of barely-the-there color.

So Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush gets a big plus for versatility. Unfortunately, sometimes there is a downside to the best of brands. I really disliked the consistency of the blush. It’s almost chalky and that is not something that I, personally, can deal with.  If you can get passed the consistency, then Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush is worth a try. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush is available at Hourglass Cosmetics and select retail locations.

Barbor Face Design Collection Review

Two beauty professionals with more than 70 years of combined beauty expertise have united for one vision -- makeup that is more than just color. World-renowned makeup artist Peter Schmidinger has developed an exclusive collection for Babor Cosmetics called The Babor Face Design Collection!

As one of the leading skin care brands worldwide, Babor sought to create a collection that would not only make the skin of every woman look beautiful, but more importantly - care for it with ingredients found in some of Babor’s most effective products. This new range offers protection, treatment, regeneration and color all in one thanks to the active “lifting” ingredient complex specially developed for the line. Samphire extracts help regenerate, Vitamin E effectively protects from free radicals, and Lupine Oil regenerates and protects the skin barrier. The amino acid complex L-PCA also gives additional moisture.

Babor Face:
  • Babor Deluxe Foundation ($42) - Has a rich, creamy texture with a lifting effect. Conceals small imperfections. The coated “Stay True” pigments merge with the skin and guarantee true lasting color and long storage life. Hyaluronan and wheat proteins provide moisture. It protects, treats and regenerates thanks to its lifting complex.
  • Babor Age Conceal Foundation ($42)  - The Anti-Age Foundation fluid regenerates all skin types with live pumpkin and retinol cells. Light dispersing pigments visually conceal lines and give natural UVA protection.
  • Babor Mattifying Foundation ($42)- Light, creamy texture with a light powdery finish – stays put all day long and prevents bothersome shine. With coated “Stay True” pigments that give true lasting color and a lipid complex made from olive oil. It protects, treats and regenerates thanks to its lifting complex.
  • Babor Mineral Powder Foundation ($42) - It is loose and light like powder, but has the concealing properties of a foundation. It consists of 99% minerals that give the skin a slight shimmer, making it look fresh and natural. Does not contain oils, wax, perfume, talc or artificial colors. Mild on skin. Apply with a kabuki-brush using circular strokes and work into the skin.
  • Barbor Perfect Finish Foundation ($42) - A silky compact foundation and powder in one. Applied with a sponge, it gives an even matte finish and covers any minor imperfections. For thicker coverage, can also be applied wet. Applied with a make-up brush, it acts like a compact powder to set and mattify make-up.
  • Perfect Skin Illuminator ($32) - A brightener in a luxurious metal case with a practical applicator brush. It is long lasting and conceals small imperfections perfectly. The mimetic pigments do not build up in lines no matter what facial movements your face makes. It protects, treats and regenerates thanks to its lifting complex.

Lovely Nail Lacquers from 100 Percent Pure

Before The Makeup Examiner shares with readers about the 100% Pure Cosmetics Nail Polish Collection, TME has to give a shout out to the brand for making it to the 2014 CEW Eco Beauty Awards finals! For those unfamiliar with the CEW Beauty Awards, they are the equivalent of the Oscars for the beauty industry.

In December, 100% Pure Cosmetics added to an already extensive line of cosmetics with its launch of nail polishes. The nail polish line consists of 20 shades, a topcoat and a basecoat, all of which are free from formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, camphor, and formaldehyde resin.

The Makeup Examiner reviewed four shades from the line that included:
  • Pie – A deep and rich red
  • Kiss – A fun and sexy hot pink
  • 12:51 – A light, kiss of peachy pink
  • Innocence- A perfect baby pink

The color hues were a perfect sampling for the line, as they ranged from intense red to light pink. This gave an excellent view of color delivery and wearability of the various shades. All four shades do require two coats, but they go on like glass and are long-lasting! Although TME has not tried 100% Pure Horsetail Base Coat, it contains the herb, horsetail (also called Shavegrass), which is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and astringent properties.

100% Pure Cosmetics is a vegan and organic beauty brand, offers free shipping on all orders over $50, and gives free samples with every order. 100% Pure Nail Polishes ($12) are available at 100% Pure and select retail locations.

Acquarella, the premiere water-based nail polish brand, announced today Nov. 5, the launch of their long awaited Fall/Winter collection. For those unfamiliar with the brand, Acquarella offers an alternative to traditional nail lacquers with their non-toxic formula.

Founded in 2004, Acquarella introduced an alternative not only to nail polishes, but to nail care as well. There is a regimen to been done when one switches from a traditional nail polish to Acquarella’s offerings, and readers can learn about this in The Makeup Examiner’s productreview.

Clarisea Sea Salt Solutions Skin and Hair Care Review

The Makeup Examiner recently came across Clarisea Sea Salt Solutions and was rather intrigue by the brand, as it offers skin care products that are nature-based and a beach spray for the hair. Having knowledge about the healing properties of sea salt, The Makeup Examiner was thrilled to have the opportunity to do a review of the brand and as a beach spray addict, TME couldn’t wait to try Clarisea’s Beachy Waves Salt Spray.

Although many of the products in the Clarisea line are geared toward acne solutions, Clarisea products are made for all types of skin and offer an alternative to harsh chemical treatments, for those with acne prone skin, and a lovely detox for those of us with tired skin. The base of Clarisea products is a fine grain blend of Pacific and Himalayan Pink sea salts mindfully crafted for all skin types, especially sensitive skin and are free of sulfates, parabens, and fragrance.

Clarisea offers several powder exfoliants -- Antioxidant Strawberry Powder Exfoliant, Instant Glow PowderExfoliant, and Rapid Detox Charcoal Exfoliant ($25 4oz each) that are geared toward fighting the effects of pollutants and stress. Antioxidant Strawberry Powder Exfoliant utilizes strawberry powder, strawberry seeds, and almond flour to break down dull build up to help unclog pores. Instant Glow Powder Exfoliant (TME Favorite) utilizes rose powder and orange peel powder to remove impurities, dead skin cells, and nourish the skin. Rapid Detox Charcoal Exfoliant utilizes bamboo charcoal powder to absorb dirt and oil and attack acne-causing bacteria. Each of the exfoliant powders are so gentle and the Instant Glow Powder Exfoliant has become a staple to wake up my stressed out skin!

Clarifying Salt Treatment ($19.50 38oz) is for the face and body and is available in a 15lb bag. The treatment is geared toward acne prone skin, but has major detox properties and left my skin baby soft right down to my toes. Using the Clarifying Salt Treatment on the face is a bit involved, requiring a one to stick their face in a bowl for two minutes, but well worth the amazing results. As a body treatment, Clarifying Salt Treatment is a great excuse for some you time. Add a cup of Clarifying Salt Treatment to your bath and soak away for a minimum of 10 minutes. The Makeup Examiner emerged with detoxed, soft, and glowing skin!

Rounding out this particular Clarisea Sea Salt Solutions review is Beachy Waves Salt Spray ($18 8oz). The spray is 100% natural, as I found out when I accidentally sprayed some in my mouth … yes, it tasted like salt water and yes, I am clumsy. Moving on … the spray is made from Pacific Ocean and Himalayan Pink Sea Salts, and organic Argan oil that left my naturally curly hair really soft and gave it that sexy beach look. Clarisea offers such a wide variety of products, in various formulations that The Makeup Examiner literally couldn’t cover all in this article, so check back for more products from Clarisea. You can find the products reviewed in this article at Clarisea Sea Salt Solutions website!

Waxelene Seeks Crowdfunding for Lip Tube

Waxelene, the number one petroleum jelly alternative for beauty, announced today, September 18, that the brand is seeking crowdfunding for the Waxelene Lip Tube. For those familiar with Waxelene, which currently comes in a jar and a flip-top tube, this is exciting news!

The Makeup Examiner has been waiting for Waxelene to offer a lip tube, as it is my go to product for dry lips. Waxelene has been looking to offer its product in a lip tube delivery, but a minimum production run is 100,000, which takes capital … serious capital. This desire to bring customers the very best has led Waxelene to start a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo.

“This is the form factor that is requested most often,” said Todd Cooper, CEO of Waxelene. “Waxelene is really effective on dry lips and the Lip Tube will make it easier to carry around and apply. We’ve wanted to offer this for a while, but a minimum production run is 100,000 and that takes capital. We’ve watched other companies raise money to execute on product ideas using crowdfunding and we thought – why not us? ”. My sentiments exactly!

Waxelene contributors will be the first to tote around the new Waxelene Lip Tube. The company is hopeful that Waxelene fans and friends will put their money where their lips are – and rally behind Waxelene’s Lip Tube campaign. Contribution levels start as low as $12 and includes four tubes fresh off the off the production line. For those interested in getting in on the ground of this endeavor, visit Indiegogo.

Jane Cosmetics Re-launched Makeup Review

You may remember Jane Cosmetics as an iconic cosmetics favorite from the 90s. Well, the brand is back with an exclusive Ulta Beauty partnership that debuted in August. And when The Makeup Examiner was approached to do a review, I was beyond thrilled. With charming product names like “Empowered”, “Graceful” and “Inspire,” Jane Cosmetics is really trying to encourage women to embrace their personal beauty. The brand is socially conscious via their “Friends of Jane” program and is listed as a cruelty-free company.

Upon the brand’s relaunch, Jane Cosmetics Owner/CEO, Lynn Tilton issued the following statement: “In bringing back the Jane brand, we wanted to provide women access to the most innovative technologies in beauty, the most fashion-forward colors and designs, and the impeccable quality of high-end products to foster her confidence in her look and her choices.” Jane Cosmetics is a budget-friendly brand. So the question is whether or not Ms. Tilton accomplished her lofty goal?

When The Makeup Examiner reviews an entire line, what I’m searching for is a consistency of quality throughout the collection of offerings. This is especially important for a budget-friendly line like Jane Cosmetics with products ranging from $6 to $20, as one could easily purchase multiple products from the brand, spending a tidy sum, and then realize that one or more of the products aren’t so wonderful.

The Makeup Examiner was sent a plethora of products from the new line … everything from Jane Eye Primer ($8) to a Giving Back Makeup Bag ($12). There is no doubt that the brand offers a complete line of makeup products and fashion-forward palettes. But again, who cares if they don’t perform? Let’s read on to find out!

Beginning with Jane Eye Primer ($8), it’s a great primer, period, and for the price … wow! The eye primer offers all-day wear and is available in one universal color.

Jane Cream Eye Shadow Jane Eye Shadow - The irony of offering an eye primer in this line is that Jane Cream Eye Shadow ($8) and Jane Eye Shadow pots ($8) are so highly pigmented, and of such outstanding quality, that the use of primer with these shadows is kind of unnecessary unless you have rather oily skin.

Be Beautiful Multi-Benefit BB Cream with SPF30 - Next up, Be Beautiful Multi-Benefit BB Cream with SPF30 ($16). The first thing that TME noticed was the SPF30 and the next, the light lovely scent. So many BB creams have this chemical odor so it was refreshing to find a very light floral smell and furthermore a budget-friendly BB cream that really works.

Jane Bronzing Powder - Moving onto two really interesting products, Multi-Colored Bronzing Powder ($12) and Multi-Colored Cheek Powder ($12) both offered a silky feel and amazing versatility with color and contouring. Now, if you’re a bronzer girl who prefers her bronzer straight up, Jane Bronzing Powder ($10) has to be one of the most highly pigmented bronzers that The Makeup Examiner has worked with.

Multi-Colored Powders - The last product, in the face product category, is Multi-Colored Correcting Powder ($12) and The Makeup Examiner can confidently state that Jane’s $12 product is on pair with Guerlain Meteorites Pearls ($58). The multi-colored powder allows for quick and easy correcting to obtain flawless looking skin.

Water-Resistant Liquid Eye Liner and Eye Line Pencil  - Focusing back on the eyes, Jane Cosmetics offers Water-Resistant Liquid Eye Liner ($8) and Water-Resistant Pencil Liner ($6). The Makeup Examiner isn’t a fan of water-resistant eye products. It is a personal preference I simply don’t like them. With that said, both products offer amazing stay-put color. But the Water-Resistant Liquid Eye Liner blew me away! The precision brush is one of the easiest that I’ve worked with and made for an easy application from thick to thin lines.

ph Adjusting Stain Gloss - The last three products in this lineup are all about your pretty pout. ph Adjusting Stain Gloss ($7) is initially clear and changes color according to the pH level of your lips. At first, The Makeup Examiner was like, “Where’s the color?”. After a few moments I found a really pretty shade with a high-shine gloss.

Jane Cosmetics Lip Gloss and Intense Color Lip Gloss are both priced at $7 each. The Makeup Examiner wasn’t able to discern a difference between the two products. Of course that’s not to say that either were bad. As a matter of fact, each has a great berry scent, rich color, easy to apply slanted tip and great shine.

Overall the new Jane Cosmetics is a good, budget-friendly brand that has managed to offer cruelty-free cosmetics. Jane Cosmetics are available on the brand’s website and Ulta Beauty.

Softlips Intense Moisture Lip Balm Review

No matter whether it’s our body, face, or lips, any beautynista knows that hydration is the key to great skin. But, it seems that are lips are often overlooked. Between the summer heat and cold winter winds, lips suffer all year long. At the end of July The Mentholatum Company, makers of Softlips products, introduced a brand new baby to the family … Softlips Intense Moisture Lip Balm.

The new Softlips Intense Moisture Lip Balm ($2.69) is a lip-hydrating product for beautynistas that combines innovative hydration properties and breath freshening technologies. Can a beautynista ask for more from a lip care product? The new lip balm is available in three fresh minty flavors, Berry Mint, Citrus Mint and Double Mint, with each offering additional ingredients for specific issues.

All three flavors contain SPF 15, shea butter, murumuru seed butter, and breath freshening properties. Berry Mint is a nourishing antioxidant rich formula that soothes, helps repair damaged skin and restores suppleness to the lips; Citrus Mint contains vitamins C and E to smooth and help repair dry, flaky lips; and Double Mint has an extra boost of mint for freshness. The Makeup Examiner’s addiction to lip products has been satisfied … for the moment. And if you’re looking for an equally satisfying lip balm, with a little color, check out Softlips Tints ($3.69). Softlips IntenseMoisture Lip Balm will be available at mass retail locations nationwide in September.

Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream Review

Happy Monday my lovelies! The Makeup Examiner hopes that your weekend was full of fabulousness. “How was mine?” you ask. Lovely, simply lovely. TME had the opportunity to catch up on some reading and devoured “Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns,” which is a fun summer weekend read.

Moving on, as lovely loyal readers know, with cosmetics The Makeup Examiner looks at two main qualities; pigment and consistency. But with BB creams, there is an effectiveness quality that needs to be observed as well. So let’s get to the get and check out the good, the bad and the beautiful about Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream.

Pond’s is a classic beauty brand that has managed to stay current throughout the brand’s 150-year history. Having just moved into the arena of makeup in July, does their latest offering measure up? Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream priced at $9.99 for 1.5 ounces is a dollar or so more then other mass brands, although The Makeup Examiner would still easily place this product within the budget beauty category. Plus, there’s also a $2 coupon on Pond’s Facebook page!

The first thing that TME noticed was the SPF 15 and the next, the lovely scent. So many BB creams have this chemical odor so it was refreshing to find a light, clean smell. Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream has a cashmere consistency and amazing buildable coverage. I love this particular versatility factor, as I haven’t found varying coverage with any other BB cream, yet.

Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream is available in two shades, Light and Medium, which is the downside. Of course, this is the downside of most BB creams and hopefully more shades will be added. There is where any negative about this product stops. With Vitamin E to both help protect and promote skin repair, and glycerin to keep skin hydrated, The Makeup Examiner saw a difference in her skin’s appearance after just 10 days.

Overall, Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream is a fantastic product and is currently The Makeup Examiner’s favorite BB cream. Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream is available nationwide at CVS. As always, The Makeup Examiner hope that readers have found this review to be helpful and for those that have used Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream, leave a comment below!

Here is the list of the six powder shades and the effect they provide:

  • Diffused - A soft, warm, pale yellow powder that conceals redness and gives skin clarity, like a soft ray of morning light
  • Dim - A neutral peach beige powder that blurs imperfections and highlights a radiant complexion with the perfect balance of warm and cool tones
  • Mood - A soft, sheer lavender pink powder that mimics the softest, most forgiving light and brightens the complexion
