Charles von Abercron: A Look At The Man Behind The GLOSSYBOX Brand

Charles von Abercron - Courtesy of GLOSSYBOX

With the recent announcement that GLOSSYBOX Founder and CEO Charles von Abercron will be stepping down from his position as CEO effective Dec. 31 and that Dr. Caren Genthner-Kappesz will be stepping in, we thought that we’d do our own version of Throwback Thursday. TME is sharing an archive interview with Charles von Abercron from February 7, 2013 … because one should never forget where they came from.

This Interview Was First Published on February 8, 2013

Hello lovelies! Yesterday, Feb. 7, I had the opportunity to interview Charles von Abercron, the founder and global CEO of GLOSSYBOX. Charles is currently in New York City for Fashion Week and truth be told, The Makeup Examiner was curious at the prospect of interviewing this well-traveled global beauty industry innovator. But, what was I going to ask the man behind the brand of the luxury beauty box -- GLOSSYBOX?

Well, I began with a very an archetypal Q&A, but the answers that I received were far from what I’d expected. With my first question being the very basic, “How did you start?” I was surprised to learn that a mere 19 months ago, what has become a global luxury beauty box brand, had humble beginnings in a tiny, windowless office in Berlin.

The Makeup Examiner: What inspired you to create GLOSSYBOX?

Charles von Abercron: Through my travels, I noticed the beauty around me and with all the [exotic] products from around the world, why not gather them for all to enjoy?

What keeps you inspired?

The desire to introduce customers to beauty brands that they may not have the opportunity to know.

How do you feel about GLOSSYBOX being referred to as the “Birchbox-Clone”?

I’m quite comfortable with this. Obviously [we] viewed other beauty box subscriptions, but [we endeavored] to offer something unique.

GLOSSYBOX has curated boxes with Refinery 29 and Man Repeller, which I find quite brilliant. Can you give any hints as to who GLOSSYBOX will be collaborating with in the upcoming months?

I can’t give names, as this is one of the elements that makes GLOSSYBOX so exciting. I can tell you that we have many wonderful surprises in store for 2013. (Sorry lovelies ... I tried.)

As a global beauty leader, what do you predict will be the hottest beauty trends for S/S 2013?

I wouldn’t necessarily predict specific trends for beauty. I see a continued interest for wonderful skin care, well made beauty tools and nails. The nail art trend has really taken off and [embellishments] of ladies nails has become as necessary as having the perfect set of shoes for an outfit.

What is the one absolute that you’d like my readers to know about GLOSSYBOX?

Everything that we do at GLOSSYBOX is done with the customer in mind. Care taken for our costumers is of utmost importance. We want them to truly feel like they’re receiving a luxurious gift each month.

What would you wish my readers to know about Charles von Abercron, the gentleman behind the brand?

Actually, I’m quite shy. (OMG! Don’t you just love it!) I’ve dedicated my heart and soul into the [GLOSSYBOX] brand. I want women to feel wonderful and receive products that they would not otherwise know of.

For anyone who has not taken the opportunity to try GLOSSYBOX, you really are missing out on a genuine luxury experience that could only be born from a very genuine gentleman. The only rumor that the Makeup Examiner was able to confirm is that the February GLOSSYBOX will be filled with jet-setting inspirations from fashion weeks around the world. Every beautynistas dream!

GLOSSYBOX offers 1, 3, 6, and 12-month subscriptions plans beginning at $21/month and the savings go up with the length of your subscription. Each box is beautifully packaged and contains 6 sample and full-sized luxury beauty products, a postcard that describes each product, plus an amazing GLOSSYBOX magazine that give tips and tricks!

Note: A very special Thank You to Charles von Abercron for taking the time to speak with TME!

Hollywood's Leading Stuntman Shares His Best Grooming and Fitness Secrets

In an ongoing series to bring the guys some much deserved attention, The Makeup Examiner caught up with Hollywood Stuntman, Bobby Holland Hanton on April 1, to discuss men’s grooming, health and lifestyle. Bobby Holland Hanton is an National Gold Medalist (GB), former footballer and award-winning stunt double who has worked with the likes of leading men Chris Hemsworth in “Thor: The Dark World” and “Heart of the Sea,” Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises,” Daniel Craig in “Quantum of Solace,” and most recently Channing Tatum in Jupiter Ascending (set to hit theaters July 2014).

Bobby has won SAG Awards for “Inception”, “Harry Potter the Deathly Hollows” and “Skyfall”; two Taurus World Stunt Award nominations for “Quantum of Solace” and “The Prince of Persia the Sands of Time", and landed in the 2009 Guinness World Records for the most targets hit with a back somersault throw in one hour. So, when it comes to understanding what it takes to push your body to its limits, and still look amazing, Bobby knows of what he speaks!

The Makeup Examiner: Your resume is amazing! Modeling, acting, gold medalist … How did you get into the intense world of stunt double?

Bobby Holland Hanton: I have had a physical career since a very young age, particularly in gymnastics. I enjoy being active, and crave the adrenaline that comes along with the job. I got a call out of the blue to audition to double for Daniel Craig in "Quantum of Solace." It was a dream come true. I went in for four or five vigorous exercise auditions; six weeks turned into six months, and I've never looked back.

I’d read that your schedule for “Thor: The Dark World” was up at 5:30 am and you kept going until 10 pm. With such an intense schedule how do you keep your energy at level?

Energy levels were very difficult to maintain, all due to the fact that my diet was so strict. I had to play around with a few things, changing around the diet, experimenting with different foods within the diet at different times. I was given Paleo protein bars from a nutritionist that I would eat as a last resort. For me, real food is better, say a breast of chicken, but sometimes that wasn't necessary available at times I needed the energy. I also had protein shakes, and powder which would offer an energy boost. Another thing I found effective is black coffee.

What advice can you give my readers for maintaining energy levels throughout the day?

Find a clean protein bar that works for you. I try and avoid ones with sugar, to eliminate the crash. I also would say a quick, double espresso shot or some black coffee.

Regarding diet and exercise, is there a different regimen for when you’re working on set versus down time?

During my down time I have the capabilities to train twice a day, more consistently. When filming or on set, I have to find time and squeeze in a workout whenever I can, whether it be during lunchtime, or late at night after we've wrapped for the day.

You've doubled for so many leading men, all of whom look so different. How do you morph into someone like, let’s say, Channing Tatum for “Jupiter Ascending” or Chris Hemsworth for “Heart of the Sea”?

For Chris, I was working out twice a day for nearly 9 months, with heavy weights and a lot of protein mixed in with my diet. Upper body workouts were very frequent. I have found that between movies it has been best to maintain a middle ground, and I have been blessed to have the ability to change body types rather easily.

As a woman, I know that makeup can give our skin a bit of a beating. With all of the makeup that’s used for your roles, how do you care for skin?

It is extremely important to maintain a strict grooming regimen, especially when I am constantly wearing makeup like you said, and wigs, while being physically active. I am lucky enough to work with Dove Men+Care who offer a full range of products specifically made for men’s skin, face and hair. I love the thickening shampoo, which truly does work, when I have wigs pulling at my hair for 12 hours a day (in Thor!). I also use the Odor Guard PW, which is extremely gentle on my skin, and keeps me moisturized after all of the makeup and prosthetics used in many of these Superhero movies.

What is your everyday skincare routine and how can the average guy implement this into his lifestyle?

I am all about having a routine day in and day out from skincare to diet and exercise. I wake up in the morning and have a quick shower, where I’ll wash and cleanse my face thoroughly. I immediately apply face lotion to keep my skin moisturized throughout the day following the shower. If I am filming outdoors, I love to use the Dove Men+Care Hydrate face lotion, because it has SPF. Just like my diet and exercise, I think discipline is a large part of a skincare regimen. Guys must take the extra 5-10 minutes every day to care for their skin and be sure they are applying the correct products to ensure the skin stays moisturized.

Can you share what you’re working on now and what we can next see you in?

I am currently working on the new Avengers (Captain America), and then have some things in the pipeline, which I cannot disclose at this time unfortunately -- but stay tuned for more to come! The movie releases, which you can expect to see me in throughout the months, are Maleficent (May), Jupiter Ascending (July), and Heart of the sea (2015).

What’s the most important thing that you’d like my readers to know regarding an overall healthy lifestyle?

An overall healthy lifestyle requires discipline. You have to set a goal for yourself and strive towards that. I try and focus on the longevity in trying to maintain that goal. For example, I give myself a treat day, which keeps me disciplined throughout the week, I looking forward to that day. You must set goals, but also rewards too – otherwise the goals seem quite unattainable at times.

Note: A very special thank to Bobby Holland Hanton for taking time from his busy schedule to share his expertise on a healthy lifestyle! Dove Men+Care products are available online at Dove and retailers nationwide. You can check out some of Bobby's stunt work at Bobby Holland Hanton!

Snowboarder Jamie Anderson Talks Olympics and Staying In Balance

Courtesy of P&G Beauty

The start of the 22nd Winter Olympics will begin on Feb. 7 marking the first time that the Olympics have been held in Russia since the fall of the Iron Curtain. Another first for the Olympics Games is the debut of Snowboard Slopestyle and US Snowboarder Jamie Anderson will be there to represent the sport. On Thursday, Jan. 23 The Makeup Examiner caught up with the 23-year-old beauty to find out about how it feels to represent the US and her secrets for staying calm, centered and beautiful.

The Makeup Examiner: With the debut of Snowboard Slopestyle at Sochi, how are you preparing for such an honor to represent both the US and your sport? How do you stay calm?

Jamie Anderson: I feel so honored to represent our country! I never thought they would add my event to the Games and I can’t wait to show everyone what Snowboard Slopestyle is all about. To stay calm, I do a lot of yoga -- now more than ever -- to help me stay peaceful and enjoy the journey there.

I understand that you have a sponsorship program for kids who are interested in snowboarding. Can you tell me a little about the program?

This is my third year doing the “Give Back with Love” charity event, which I do right around the winter solstice to help support local kids in my community. Growing up with a really big family, I know how expensive it is to get into snowboarding and I wanted to help kids who aren’t financially able to purchase equipment and season passes get on the mountain. This year I am sponsoring eight kids!

How is your clothing line going and where can we get TRYE gear?

My clothing line is awesome! My newest collection with Billabong is inspired by Peru and South America; I just did a trip to Machu Picchu and Bolivia and found some really cool tribal designs and textures that I incorporated into my pieces. The line is environmentally friendly too, we use all sustainable polyester and recycled water bottles to make the jackets, and my street wear is made of organic cotton and hemp. You can find it all on Billabong.

How did the Olay partnership come about? Why did you want to sign with the brand?

The Olay sponsorship came about because of the upcoming Olympics and also because of P&G’s “Thank You, Mom” campaign. “Thank You, Mom” really inspired me because my mom worked so hard to help me follow my dreams. And as for Olay specifically, I have always known the brand and loved their products so it felt like a natural fit.

How do you protect your skin when you’re out on the slopes?

I use a lot of different things, but lately I have been loving the Olay Fresh Effects Hydrating Gel Moisture, which really helps bring hydration to your face. Being in the mountains most of the year my skin gets really dry, so it’s really nice to use that.

Obviously the cameras are always on when you’re on the slopes. What do you do to look so amazing?

I always try to have a smile on my face! Snowboarding makes me so happy and I think you can really tell when people are enjoying what they are doing. I keep it mostly natural, but I like to use a little CoverGirl Bombshell mascara to give me a dark, voluminous lashes yet a fresh look out on the mountain.

Do you have a different beauty regime for when you know the cameras are around versus what you would have just hanging with friends and family?

Before a big competition I definitely take an extra moment to pamper myself and look beautiful. But if I am just going to yoga or to hang out with my sisters —nothing over the top!

Are you going to do anything special, makeup wise, to represent the US while in Sochi?

I’m going to try to look as beautiful as I can! Definitely the CoverGirl Bombshell mascara.

What is the number one piece of beauty advice you’d offer readers?

More than anything, beauty is about what goes in your body—make sure you are eating healthy, nutritious food and drinking a lot of water.

As an obvious role model, what life advice would you give to girls?

I would tell girls to love themselves more than anything, find something that they truly are passionate about and to follow their dreams and trust that they can do anything they believe in!

Note: A very special thanks to Jamie Anderson for taking the time to chat. It was a true pleasure.

Jennifer Garner 2014 SAG Awards ‘Adir A-do’: How to get the look exclusive

Christopher Polk/Getty
Jennifer Garner looked classically stunning, from head-to-toe, at the 20th Annual SAG Awards held Saturday, Jan. 18 in Los Angeles. The 41-year-old actress was nominated for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award for “Dallas Buyers Club,” which went to the cast of “American Hustle”.

Although she didn’t win, Jennifer served as presenter for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, which went to her “Dallas Buyers Club” co-star Jared Leto. Rarely one to make a misstep on the Red Carpet, last night was no different as Jennifer wore a strapless, navy silk bustier Max Mara custom gown and Brian Atwood shoes that were accented with a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and David Webb jewelry.

Jennifer’s longtime stylist AdirAbergel, and TME favorite, whipped up yet another amazing “Adir A-do”. Adir shares that his inspiration for the look was, “An airy romantic updo with texture and movement … a modern and fresh style glamorously swept off the face to elongate the neck”.

Adir started the hairstyle by spraying Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray all over Jennifer’s hair to create a rougher texture to the hair and to help keep Jennifer’s bangs back off her face. Adir then rough-dried the hair until it was completely dry and took random sections and curled them with a 1/2-inch iron in “no particular direction,” to create a romantic texture.

Once the texture was applied, he rubbed Kusco Murphy Lavender Cream into his palms like a hand cream and swept it through her hair to get it to stay back. When recreating the look, Adir said, “To secure in place, begin by pinning both sides of the hair back right below the crown and then continued to secure sections below in a knotted fashion. Once all sections are knotted and secured resulting in a beautiful shape, finish with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hair Spray to hold the style in place. For more by Adir Abergel, follow Adir on Twitter @hairbyadir.

Elizabeth Banks Gets An Adir ‘Ado’ For The ‘Hunger Games’ Premiere

Elizabeth Banks (L to R) Jason Merritt/Getty Images and Steve Granitz/WireImage
The Los Angels premiere of the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” took place last night, Nov. 18 and among the A-list stars in attendance was Elizabeth Banks. Elizabeth, dressed in a figure-fitting Versace gown with a plunging neckline, certainly gave the movie’s leading lady, JLaw, a run for her money!

Elizabeth completed her stunning look with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s, a Jennifer Fisher ring, a Rauwolf clutch, a Jennifer Fisher ring … and a voluminous undone bombshell blow-out by THE Red Carpet Hair Stylist, Adir Abergel. In a TME exclusive, Adir shares the how-to for Elizabeth’s sexy look.

Adir was inspired by the early 2000's Versace campaigns with Amber Valetta shot by Steven Misel. He loved the lines of this dress and wanted to bring out the same sexiness to the hair. Sexy, smooth, curves was the true inspiration for the hair.

How To Get The Look:

1. Adir started out by applying Argan rejuvenating hair treatment from mid shaft to the ends to help with shine and smoothness.
2. He followed by applying J.F Lazartigue Hair Volume Tonic all over the roots to help with movement and bounce and parted the hair in a deep side part.
3. He then used a medium round brush and blow-dried the hair smooth.
4. When hair was smoothed and completely dry, he used the O-Pod rollers by Cloud Nine and set the hair to give it shape, bounce and movement.
5. After removing the rollers, he brushed out the hair and set the style with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray for all night hold.

If readers haven’t guessed by now, yes, The Makeup Examiner adores Adir Abergel and you should start sending in questions for an upcoming interview. Note: Thank you to Adir Abergel, for again sharing your how-to!

Who got an Adir ‘A-do’ at the Emmys and how you can get the look

By now, most beautynistas expect that if there’s an awards show, Adir Abergel will be creating a style for one or more lovely ladies walking the red carpet. Of course the Sunday, Sep. 22 Emmy’s were no exception with both Julianna Margulies, 47, and Aubrey Plaza, 29, red carpet coifs styled by the renowned red carpet hair stylist himself.

Julianna Margulies, star of “The Good Wife,” served as a presenter at the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Julianna arrived on the red carpet in a custom Reed Krakoff dress (similar in inspiration to one from the S/S 2014 collection) that was understated elegance and for which Adir drew inspiration for Julianna’s red carpet look.

Aubrey Plaza, “Parks and Recreation,” arrived on the carpet in a long-sleeved Marios Schwab gown. The gown, black lace and a bejeweled high neck, was defiantly a “love it or hate it” choice. By the way beautynistas, both Aubrey and Julianna just made the Refinery29 Best Dressed List. Personally, The Makeup Examiner wasn’t loving Aubrey’s gown, but her hair was lovely! Aubrey’s hair was slightly reminiscent of Maria Sharapova’s coif for the ESPY’s.

Are you ready for Julianna Margulies Emmy “how-to” by Adir Abergel? Adir drew inspiration from the modern simplicity and clean lines of Julianna’s dress by creating a sleek low ponytail that was accented with a several side swept bang.

How To Get The Look:

  1. Towel dry hair and apply volumizing spray at the roots
  2. Apply a heat protectant from mid-shaft to ends
  3. Part the hair in a deep side part and blow-dry smooth with a medium round brush
  4. Next is the super smooth side bang, which can easily be created and defined by using a glossing cream like Fekkai Glossing Cream
  5. Back comb the crown area for a little height and pull the hair into a low-slung ponytail
  6. Wrap the ponytail with leather twine to give it an extra edge
  7. Continue by tucking hair behind one ear, making sure the deep bang swoops slightly over one eye
  8. Apply finishing spray and the look is complete

Summer To Fall Hair Care Guide From Celebrity Stylist, Sarah Potempa

Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa Courtesy of Aussie
Happy Friday lovelies! Can you believe that we’re in the middle of August? Oh, the balmy days of summer are fading fast and we’ll soon be looking at the wonders of fall foliage. For those beautynistas that are pouting about the end of summer, The Makeup Examiner has found this amazing quote that sums up fall fabulously, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” ~Albert Camus. No one can pout when thinking of autumn in those terms or when we get beauty backup from celebrity stylist, Sarah Potempa!

The weather from August through October can be uh … unpredictable. So Sarah offers tips to combat bad hair days no matter what the weather swings our way. Grab your guy for this one, as Sarah also brings us tips for him with the integration of Aussie’s brand new Aussie Men.

Summer to Fall Hair Care

Have your hair go with the weather -- don’t fight it! Instead, use the unpredictable weather to experiment with different products and see what works best for your natural hair.

1. Try a new product! “I love the Sprunch Mousse + Leave-in Conditioner ($3.25),” says Sarah. Also, everyone can benefit from the Hair Insurance Leave-in Conditioner Spray ($3.25), which protects hair from the elements.

2. Swimming in chlorine and saltwater can damage your hair and even tear away at the strands. Sarah recommends putting in a little conditioner before going into the water. Any conditioner will work, but she loves Miraculously Smooth or Moist conditioners ($3.25 each).

-When your hair is a little damp, coat it with conditioner and brush or comb it through. Throw it into a braid or bun and when you come out of the water, your hair will be silky and easy to run your fingers through.

-The conditioner will almost act like a styling product, and once your hair air-dries, it will be smooth and soft.

Summer to Fall Hair Style

“I like creating a look that is undone and messy, but with one element of your look that is still sleek and polished,” says Sarah.

1. Try a messy braid, but keep your bangs sleek. Pull your hair into a smooth braided topknot for a look that is professional, but fun.

2. Ponytails can also be a fun way to experiment with different styles depending on what mood you’re in.

-Try one that is slick and high by using Miraculously Smooth Gel ($3.25) to tame hair.

-As an alternative, keep your ponytail messy and textured with some Sprunch Spray ($3.25).

Guys Guide to Getting Clean

If you’re active and on the go, you can shower everyday but you don’t need to shampoo your hair. Use a little bit of shampoo to clean your SCALP and not your hair -- don’t glop it on! You don’t want to strip your hair of moisture.

1. Use the Deep Clean Shampoo or Daily Clean Shampoo ($5.94 each) to get a deep clean.

-Don’t forget about the back of your head and around the ears!

-Massage the whole scalp to stimulate blood flow, which then stimulates hair growth.

2. The Daily Clean 2N1 ($5.94) allows you to clean the scalp and get rid of residue, but also provides the benefits of conditioning. You get soft, conditioned hair for less work!

-Using a conditioner adds more weight to your hair so it will be less poufy and can also help condition a dry scalp.

Guys Guide to Getting Styled

The most important part of a guy’s head is the line that starts from the temples and goes around the head. This is your guideline for styling. Below that line, style down, and above that line, style up!

1. Aussie Men Maximum Hold Gel ($5.94) is a water-based gel, which will give you the hold you need while still being flexible and moldable … not crunchy! It will also evaporate throughout the day, making your hair feel lighter versus a heavy silicone-based product.

-Squirt the gel on a large flat brush or comb and evenly distribute throughout the hair.

-Take your fingers and piece it out.

2. Aussie Men Texturizing Wax ($2.97) will help enhance a great haircut.

-Take the wax between your thumb and forefinger and twist little sections of the hair to create the textured shape you want.

3. If you love product, use the gel as a base to tame the hair, then the wax to give definition.

A big thank you too Sarah for sharing her tips with TME readers! And for more styling tips, visit Aussie’s Unfair Hair Guide. Aussie products are available on the brand’s website and at CVS.

Interview with MLB pitcher C.J. Wilson on love, charity and guy’s grooming

The Makeup Examiner caught up with Los Angeles Angel’s pitcher and Head & Shoulders Mane Man, C.J. Wilson on Aug. 13 in New York City. C.J. is in the city to play against the Yankees and took time out of his busy schedule to discuss his fiancée supermodel Lisalla Montenegro, his philosophy of life, and his secrets for always looking so amazing.

Congratulations on your engagement to Lisalla! How did you propose?
C.J.: I’d wanted to do something really special. Initially I was going to try Griffith Park and catch Lisalla completely by surprise. Although, I’d commissioned a [engagement] ring and had it since March, the opportunity didn’t present itself until May. And it was actually a really unexpected opportunity. We [Lisa and I] were staying with friends in Houston and I’d carried this ring around with me for months. My friends knew that I had the ring, even their kids knew, which kind of had me a bit worried because I didn’t want the kids to “rat me out”. So one night while we were getting ready for bed, Lisalla was saying ‘I love more’ and I said, ‘No, I love you more and I can prove it’. I went over to my backpack and grabbed the ring, showed it to her and it took Lisalla a few minutes before she realized that I was asking her to marry me.

{C.J. shared that the wedding will take place in December and for guys wanting to seek a unique way to pop the question, C.J. advises to make it personal and special. He shared that he didn’t want to do the whole “baseball stadium” thing because he wanted something intimate.}

Between baseball and racing, you are an extremely physically active guy, but you always look picture perfect. What’s your secret? Do you follow a specific grooming regimen?

Keeping clean. I shower a lot. Because I’m always on the go with baseball, working out, racing (C.J. has his own racing team) … and as a spokesperson for Head & Shoulders I don’t want to look like a dirty mess so I’m pretty mindful of my appearance.

I’ve seen a few of the Head & Shoulders “Good Happens” ads. They are hilarious. Did you have fun shooting them and what’s the slogan … something about smelling handsome?

I’ve had a lot of fun doing the spots and I find myself laughing at them. Not only because they’re funny, but I laugh at myself too. For one of the spots, I was asked to breakdance and I was kind of like ‘how skilled do you need me to be’? I’m not exactly a breakdancer. But, it’s just part of my philosophy of life to go into a situation with commitment and do my very best. In the end it was funny to watch myself with a dancing robot. The slogan is, ‘When you’re 100% flake free and smell 100% handsome … Good Happens.”

You’re out in the sun a lot and, at 32, I imagine that you’ve adopted a skin care regimen. What skin care advice do you have for the guys?

First, I don’t drink or smoke. (Readers, this adheres to C.J.’s Straight Edge lifestyle, which both he and Lisalla follow) I would recommend that you adopt a good shaving regimen. I shave at night before bed and do this because if I were to shave, let’s say, before a workout, all that sweat and dirt would just go into my pores. Another tip is that I don’t go to bed with any product in my hair. I wash my hair with Head & Shoulders, which is the official shampoo of Major League Baseball and makes it easy for me to have a great product to use on my hair at the stadium. Lastly, I always use SPF. I’m constantly out in the sun so protecting my skin is must.

Your charity, C.J. Wilson's Children's Charities, is gearing up for the 5th Annual Throwing Strikes bowling tournament in September. What is the charity’s mission?

Yeah, Throwing Strikes is a lot of fun. It gives me a chance to interact with fans and everyone an opportunity to participate in an activity that sort of levels the playing field. As for the charity, we raise funds, awareness, and encourage youth participation in community service and charitable giving that will directly benefit children and their families affected by chronic, life-threatening illnesses or dealing with social or financial challenges. I also participate in the RBI Program, for which Head & Shoulders graciously supports through their “Season of the Whiff” campaign.

What The Makeup Examiner took away from her interview with C.J. Wilson, was an impression of a terrific role model, which can be a rarity in professional sports. C.J is a genuine and intelligent guy who loves life and goes through it making sure to think of others.

Note: A very special thanks to C.J. Wilson for taking the time to chat. It was a true pleasure.

Demi Lovato ‘Rocker Chic” At The 2013 Teen Choice Awards

Demi Lovato never fails to surprise on the red carpet and at the Aug. 11 Teen Choice Awards, Demi again proved why she makes for one of the most interesting celebrity’s with her 80s Punk inspired look. Her dramatic, edgy look was absolutely fierce and is absolutely attainable.

20-year-old Demi served as presenter, performer, and nominee at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards and did so looking fresh and edgy. Sporting an intense smokey eye, Demi made this the focal point of her makeup look. With dramatic black eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow the key to this powerful look is to play down everything else.

Demi followed the “either or” rule to rock the intense smokey eye, choosing to play up her gorgeous eyes and keep the rest of her makeup very muted. Her cheeks showed just a kiss of color, as did Demi’s lips. Check out The Makeup Examiner’s “Fall Makeup Palette Preview” for an easy guide to the “either or” look.

Now that we’ve reviewed, and revered, Demi Lovato’s makeup, let’s check out Demi’s hair with celebrity stylist Adir Abergel, as he reveals exactly how he created Demi’s hairstyle for the 2013 Teen Choice Awards and gives an exclusive “how-to” to TME readers! Inspired by 1980’s punk, Adir created a modern half-up version of the pompadour. The structural look is accented by loose waves that give the edgy style a touch of soft femininity.

How To:
  1. Begin by applying volumizing spray at the roots
  2. Next apply Orlando Pita Rejuvenating Hair Treatment Oil on ends to create shine and protection from heat
  3. Follow this by “rough-drying” the hair until it is completely dry
  4. With a round brush, blow-dry the sections from the hairline to the crown smooth
  5. Clip the smooth area and section off. Using a one-inch barrel curling iron, create waves through the rest of the hair. Hair should be loosely curled.
  6. Next apply Sexy Hair Powder Play to create a matte texture.
  7. Backcomb the hair from roots to hairline to create height and structure.
  8. Slick back the hair tight on the both sides of the face starting at the temple and secure at the back of the head with a bobby pin.
  9. Finish by hand raking the top section to create the modern pompadour. Secure with bobby pins and finish with Fekkai Sheer Hold Hair Spray.

2013 Met Ball ‘Punk Chaos’ Celebrity Get The Look Exclusive From Adir Abergel

This year at New York’s annual Met Ball, which took place on May 6, saw a bevy of celebrity beauties “Punk It Up” on the red carpet. Mainly inspired by The Met’s new show, “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” which will open on Thursday. Two of the most recognizable hairstyles witnessed on the red carpet were created by, celebrity stylist Adir Abergel, using his signature style of sexy, undone hair. And Adir is sharing the how-tos of these stunning looks with The Makeup Examiner readers!

Kristen Stewart wore Stella McCartney with an inspired look that was 1950’s greaser meets 1990’s androgynous style. Kristen’s hair was a chic deep-sided slicked back coif with a low knot.

How to get Kristen’s look:

First start by applying a volumizer all over the roots on towel-dried hair. Then create a deep side part by following the highest part of your eyebrow arch. Follow by rough drying your hair completely and then take the top section of the hair and blow-dry it smooth with a round brush. Once you are done smoothing the hair take a paddle brush and slick both sides of the hair back into a low knot at the base of your head. Once the sides are slicked back and in a knot, then take the remaining top section of the hair leaving some height in the front and slick it back around the existing knot to complete the look. Secure with a few bobby pins and hairpins and use buildable spray like Fekkai Sheer hold for all night hold.

Maggie Q wore Prabal Gurung with an inspired look that was traditional warrior meets 1980’s. Maggie’s hair was a topknot at the crown of the head that had light ends that fanned out … a perfect sexy, chic look for summer!

How to get Maggie Q’s look:

Start by applying a spray volumizer at the roots to establish a good foundation for the look. Blow-dry hair smooth and once the hair is smooth, take the hair into a high ponytail and position at the top of the crown using Kusco Murphy Lavender Hair Cream to prevent flyaways and to add sheen. Once in a ponytail, twist the hair around and fasten into a topknot, making sure to leave to ends loose and flared. Secure the style with a high hold finishing spray for an all night hold and complete the look with Fekkai Glossing Mist to maintain shine.

Aside from these stunning looks, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Sarah Jessica Parker, super model Cara Delevingne, and Hollywood “It Girl” Jennifer Lawrence all looked amazing. These ladies inspired looks run the gamut from simple-chic to crazy-couture.
