Is It Time To Hope On The Brunette Bandwagon?

Have you seen Lucy Hale? Apparently, she's joined the brunette bandwagon. Just a few weeks earlier at the Oscar’s we saw Charlize Theron and Emilia Clarke switch up their iconic platinum locks for a more romantic chocolate hue. It’s certainly looking like brunette will be the one of the biggest hair trends this year!

Fortunately, this is one trend that we can try out at home and without a ton of commitment. Clairol Natural Instincts is a brand that we've used for years and it's a brand that we trust because it's never done us wrong.  This semi-permanent line is formulated with Coconut Oil and Aloe Vera for glossy like shine and natural color you can easily switch out after a few washes.

Check Out These Changes!

Clairol Natural Instincts can be found online and at mass retailers nationwide!

Top Holiday Hair Tips From Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for "corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience, be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.
  2. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken's new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!
  3. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!
  4. Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass, which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.
  5. Brunette Beauty: To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or ColorExtend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.

Redken products can only be guaranteed authentic when purchased from a salon. To locate a Redken salon please visit Redken online.

Hairstyling Do’s and Don’ts for Your Face Shape

Have you ever perused through a magazine and stumbled across a hairstyle that looks absolutely stunning? And then decided that is THE cut for you? And then cried your eyes out after the stylist gave you the precise cut that you requested? Of course you have – we all have! Before you blame the stylist, (with the exception of a woman that we’ll refer to as Edwina Scissorhands), you need to understand that educating yourself is a good way to get the haircut and hairstyle that looks good on you.

Consider this, you know your body type and take that into account when shopping. Why? Because you know that certain materials and styles aren’t flattering for your body type. The same rule goes for getting the most flattering cut for you. Your face shape plays a big role in choosing the best a hair cut! Cutler/Redken Salon Senior Stylist, Kelsy Osterman, shares her tips for determining your face shape, and how to highlight your features accordingly.

Face Shape Analysis: Pull your hair away from your face into a ponytail. Then, standing in front of a mirror look at the width of your forehead, cheeks and jaw. Match your dimensions to the below.

Round: Forehead, cheeks and jaw are the same width, without a pronounced jaw line.

  • Do - Elongate a round face with a lengthening cut and sharp angles.
  • Do - Even out your proportions and slim cheeks with layers that start at least two inches below the jaw.
  • Don’t - Cut blunt fringe (bangs) that mimics the roundness of the face.

Triangle: Forehead width is narrower than jaw width.

  • Do - Soften this bold shape by cutting layers fuller through the top and taper towards the jaw.
  • Do - Backcomb hair near the roots to achieve volume if you have fine hair.
  • Don’t - Cut a blunt bob ending near the jaw line, it will accentuate jaw width.

Square: Four widest points on the face are the outer corners of the forehead and jaw. These points are parallel.

  • Do - Tone down sharp angles by cutting layers or fringe that start near the eyes/cheekbone and cascade downward.
  • Do - Work a trendy, short lob with a few layers to slim down the jaw.
  • Don’t - Blunt layers at the jaw line or forehead, which widen and square off the face.

Diamond: Cheekbones are the most dominant feature, while forehead and jaw are narrower.

  • Do - Create the illusion of more proportion by cutting layers that stop near the jaw, which adds width and dimension.
  • Do - Add balance by cutting shorter bangs to bring the eye to the forehead.
  • Don’t - Cut soft, cascading fringe that lands near the cheekbone, bringing the eye to that feature.

Grey Hair Secrets Revealed

It’s safe to say that we have a love/hate relationship with grey hair. One of the most beautiful hues are stunning silver strands proudly worn by our sisters. However, there’s a whole other side to grey -- the side that has us screaming at the first sight of silver! It seems as though that first grey hair on our head is a symbol of “getting old.” And many women opt to cover the grey. But no matter whether you opt to embrace the silver or cover the grey, there are quite a few misconceptions regarding our hair. Here to demystify the secrets to amazing hair color is Dermatologist Dr. Joyce Davis or Colorist James Corbett.

Myth #1: Upon seeing your first grey, you should pluck it: This is actually the worst thing you can do - just like your mother’s age old advice, pluck a hair and two more grow in its place. It’s instinctive to want to pull out the first grey -- and it’s a quick fix -- but as Clairol’s Dermatologist Dr. Joyce Davis notes, it’ll only cause the hair to grow back again, coarser. If you’re only seeing a few strands, she suggests a healthier quick fix, like Clairol’s Temporary Root Touch Up Powder. The powder seamlessly blends into your natural color to mask the appearance of greys and it takes less than 10 seconds to apply!

Did you Know? Hair doesn’t “turn” grey, it grows grey: hair and hair color are actually two entirely different things. We have separate stem cells that make up hair and the pigment. Hair dye just coats the hair but doesn’t penetrate the hair or alter the structure. If you’re looking to cover up the greys, make sure you do the following:

  • Use a permanent hair dye, not demi-permanent. This can get confusing when at the drugstore as there’s so many options that promise to dye your hair. The difference: a demi-permanent color (like Clairol’s Natural Instincts) is like a gloss, it can’t drastically change your color because it settles on top of the hair. It tones and softens your color, and only lasts about a month or so. Permanent dye actually lifts your color to give you a long-lasting change.
  • Grey hair can be resistant to color, but fear not! Using a permanent color like Clairol’s Nice’n Easy Color Care, which promises 100% grey coverage, will work hardest in giving you that desired rich color. Clairol Color Director, James Corbett suggests using a shade that’s slightly darker on your roots for stubborn greys to ensure full coverage.

Myth #2: You HAVE to color your grays: Embrace the grey, in a chic-trending way! Hollywood legends, like Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren, sport a look referred to as “grey blending,” where “you use a light ash based shade on large percentages of gray hair. Instead of ‘covering’ the grey you give it an ashy, smoky, silvery or pewter tone to blend it,” says James Corbett. Wondering how to achieve this look at home? Use Clairol’s new Nice’n Easy to effortlessly blend your greys with a beautiful shade such as 9A, Light Ash blonde, to give you that silvery, toned look.

The Scoop On Styling A New Pixie Cut

In spite of the humidity that we’ve been experiencing, Summer 2018 doesn’t have to mean bad hair days. Summer and it’s humid temperatures bring thoughts of shorter and possibly simpler 'dos for our hair. A few members of Team TME have certainly had those thoughts floating through our heads for the past few weeks and we know that we aren’t the only ones. But there is somewhat of a misconception regarding short hair. Mainly that a short style, like the Pixie, is going to be a "one note" look. So not true!

Some of our favorite celebrities, including Katy Perry, Kate Mara and Lily Collins, have tried the Pixie -- each with a super stylish twist. We think that everyone can agree that these ladies look stunning, but rest assured if you decide to go this route you need the scoop on the best ways to style this sexy cut. Turning to our friend, Redken Grooming Expert and Cutler Stylist Jenny Balding, Jenny shared a few of her favorite (and easy) ways to style the Pixie cut.

Jenny’s first bit of advice, “With short cuts, you need to create attitude, whether it’s rock-and-roll or romantic.”  This is our personal philosophy of life, but oh-so-true with this specific hairdo. Jenny has shared three amazing looks and the simple ways to achieve them using Redken stylers.

The Forward Sweep
  1. Mist Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer onto damp hair and comb through.
  2. Apply a dime-size amount of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel evenly throughout hair.
  3. To direct hair forward, blow-dry using your fingers in a side-to-side sweeping motion for tousled texture. Once hair is dry, take random pieces and flatiron for additional dimension.
  4. To enhance texture and definition, reapply a small amount of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel, and work into a chic, forward sweep.
  5. Finish with a mist of Redken wax blast 10 high-impact finishing spray-wax for instant undone texture.
  6. The next day, mist Redken pillow proof blow dry two-day extender all over to refresh the style.

The Sleek Pixie
  1. Mist Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer onto damp hair and comb through.
  2. Apply a dime-size amount of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel evenly throughout hair.
  3. Create a deep side part, then use a fine-tooth comb to blow-dry hair as smooth as possible in the direction you want it to lay.
  4. Once hair is dry, flatiron to smooth out any kinks.
  5. For added sleekness, reapply a small amount of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel and comb through to distribute. Position the fringe across the forehead and finesse the shape as needed, tucking any longer pieces behind the ears.
  6. Finish with a thorough mist of Redken quick dry 18 instant finishing spray for shine and long-lasting control.

Glam Volume
  1. Mist Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer onto damp hair and comb through.
  2. Apply a dime-size amount of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel evenly throughout hair. To maintain natural texture, blow-dry hair using your fingers, lifting sections as you dry to add volume.
  3. After hair is completely dry, use a 1” curling iron to randomly curl sections downward. Take small sections and alternate directions to create dimension
  4. Emulsify 2 – 4 pumps of Redken short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel in your palms and run your hands through the hair, using your fingertips to gently lift and shape the front layers into an upward direction.
  5. Finish with a mist of Redken control addict 28 extra high-hold hairspray for maximum control.
  6. The next day, mist Redken pillow proof blow dry two-day extender all over, using your fingers to refresh the texture.

You don’t have to be afraid that a shorter style is only going to offer you one look. As you can see, one cut ... three different stunning styles!

Summer Tresses Treatment from Celeb Stylist Felix Fischer

Courtesy Felix Fischer IG

As we were stating yesterday, the things this weather will do to our hair! Not to mention the beach, the pool, the summer sun, and all of the other summertime activities. By the end of a really great weekend, our hair has a bonafide hangover!

But, we recently came across an amazing treatment from celebrity hairstylist Felix Fischer. Felix has coiffed the likes of Penelope Cruz, Ashley Graham, J.Lo, Gigi Hadid and more, so we thought that his restorative Treatment Pony was very much worth a try.

The Treatment Pony not only works wonders for our summer damage hair, we know that it’ll be amazing for winter too! The best part of this treatment -- other than gorgeous hair -- it can be done any time of day!

Felix’s Treatment Pony:

Step One: First, brush hair out and add your favorite hair mask to the entire head, like the evolis Professional PROMOTE Treatment Mask. (TME Favorite)

Step Two: Place hair on top of head and brush into a simple high ponytail, securing with a gentle hair elastic.

Step Three: Heat up a quarter inch hair wand (try hot tools). Take 1-inch sections of hair from the pony and wrap around the wand, leaving out the ends. Keep going until whole ponytail is curled.

Step Four: Apply Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray to curls and shake up/rough them up for added volume and texture.

Step Five: Go about your business and enjoy amazing hair!

How To Wear Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year

By now you’ve probably heard that Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, announced on Dec. 7, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet as the Pantone Color of the Year selection for 2018. The explanation behind this particular hue -- “Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world.”

While this hue is not exactly a personal favorite, we’re all for some major chill in a world that seems to often leave us spinning out to find a bit of calm. The global recognition that color has a direct effect on mood is one that we concur with and one that we practice. As we previously stated, Ultra Violet is not a favorite hue however it’s one that we can absolute incorporate into our surroundings to help inspire focus and community -- for which we could all use a little more of. Incorporating Ultra Violet into your look is far easier than you think! To get you started, here are few of Team TME’s picks.

If you’re feeling a little bold, check out Clairol Color Crave Hair Makeup in “Brilliant Amethyst” ($10.99). It transforms all hair shades and textures, even the darkest hair and is a healthier alternative to permanent color thanks to no ammonia, no peroxide and no parabens.

The ghd Contour May Be This Year’s Must-Have Tool

In continuation from last season’s obsession with curls, Fall 2017 is big on texture, with 90s-inspired looks taking center stage on the catwalks and the Red Carpet. In response to these trends, ghd has introduced the new ghd contour, a limited edition tool the launched this October and available for FW17 only.

Featuring advanced ceramic heat technology and multi-dimensional plates; with ghd contour you can add depth and bold texture to any look, to instantly enhance shape and volume. Create a playful accent to the hair or add texture to silky strands that won’t hold a tease. Instantly enhance shape and experiment with different sections for a dual texture effort. Featuring the same advanced ceramic heat technology you know ghd by, this styling tool is a must have this season.

“We saw a lot of crimps in the 80’s and early 2000’s.  When I think about 80’s crimps I see something big and teased and wild looking. When I think of the late 90’s/early 2000’s, I think of something with a lot of product and stiff looking. Today’s modern crimp is neither of those. Think soft, playful and understated,” says celebrity hairstylist and ghd brand ambassador JustineMarjan.

JUSTINE’S TOP TIP: “You can easily add a pop of interest to any hairstyle through crimping. It creates amazing texture that instantly revives a look. For example, I love the way crimped hair looks when it's brushed and teased for major volume!”

  • ghd advanced ceramic heat technology (heats to 365°F)
  • Maximum size with multi-dimensional plates
  • 2-year warranty
  • Sleep mode: switches off after 30 minutes
  • Universal voltage

Summer Hair Care Tips with Pureology Artistic Ambassador Ruth Roche

For several seasons, beach waves and “lived-in” looks have been in vogue for hair with a popularity brought about from the runway to Coachella … and these looks show no signs of an exit. Why would they? Beach waves and “just out of bed” hair is sexy and so easily achieved! A big bonus to these looks is the advantage of not having to re-do your ‘do the next day. For those of us with color-treated hair, another bonus is the incentive to not over-cleanse our hair, which ultimately results in expedited color fading and hair damage.

Pureology offers up a different way to cleanse hair with the Pureology Cleansing Condition range. The Pureology Cleansing Condition range offers three low-foam cleansing treatments that gently cleanse the hair while simultaneously softening, improving elasticity and helping preserve color. The line is customizable based on hair type and is versatile as Cleansing Conditions feature gentle formulas that can be used on their own or incorporated into one’s existing regimen, resulting in hair that is healthy.

  • Pureology Hydrate Cleansing Condition - For normal to dry color-treated hair. Features rosemary extract to deeply nourish and soften.
  • Pureology Strength Cure Cleansing Condition - For micro-scarred/damaged color-treated hair. Features Pureology’s signature Asta-Repair to fortify and restore.
  • Pureology Smooth Perfection Cleansing Condition - For frizz-prone color-treated hair. Features camellia oil to smooth and control frizz.

Pureology Artistic Ambassador Ruth Roche Tips To Keep Your Summer Color:

  1. For anyone, but especially those with color-treated hair, try incorporating a cleansing condition like Pureology’s Cleansing Conditions ($34 each), into your regular hair care regimen 1-2 times per week. Because Pureology’s formulas are low-foam and created specifically for color-treated hair with the AntiFade Complex, they help to maintain a healthy cuticle for smooth strands that retain your color.
  2. Conditioning cleansers are great for curly hair because most curly hair clients find that shampooing her hair every day with regular shampoo tends to dry it out. Conditioning cleansers keep more moisture in the hair, keeping hair from getting too big and the curls from separating.
  3. In terms of usage, if your hair and scalp tends to be drier, once a week is sufficient. If your hair is on the normal side, 2 to 3 times per week is great. If your hair is thin, alternate to three times a week with regular shampoo and once a week with cleansing conditioner.

Pureology Cleansing Condition products are available Ulta!

So, we are again very thankful to share Sarah’s latest with our beloved readers! The looks are Cali-inspired and perfect for the entire season!

Step 3:  Pull the hair into a ponytail, leaving the bottom braid out. Wrap the braid around the ponytail and secure with a pin.

Step 4: Loosely curl the remaining hair in the ponytail with The Beachwaver Co. Beachwaver S1.25.

Mixed Braids and Waves:

Adir’s creations for the Red Carpet have never failed to impress, and with that, we were far from surprised to witness stunning creations in the form of hair accessories from the ADIR X LELET NY Mixed Metal Collection that launched this month. The collaborative collection is true to heart with a blending of sculptural design that leaves the pulses racing!

The ADIR X LELET NY Mixed Metal Collection consists of 15 pieces that include headbands, barrettes, combs and hairpins -- all crafted from antiqued 18k gold, antique sterling silver, and antiqued rose gold. We first got a glimpse of the collection on the Red Carpet last month and have been anxiously awaiting the collection’s launch.

The collection war born from a gap in the hair accessories climate. Seeking something truly unique and special, Adir and LELET NY Creative Director Sara Bieler Sasson had a meeting of the creative minds and we see a truly distinctive design collection! Some of the pieces within the collection are one of a kind and all absolutely offer something personal, unique and stunning to a highly neglected area of fashion -- a women’s hair wardrobe.
