Holiday Travel Gear: The 2019 Beauty Must-Haves

Oh, it's on .... the crazy travel of the Holiday Season is about to be here! There's no doubt that we love the holiday season. Maybe it’s because we know that parties are in abundance, or perhaps it’s the thought (and sigh of relief) that soon we'll be spending the post-holiday with our toes in the sand -- far, far away from the cold! Most likely it’s a lovely combination. However before we get to jet off to parts unknown, Team TME has to share the beauty must-haves for traveling with ease this holiday season.

Traveling is essentially second nature to us, although it hasn’t always been so. When we sat down to really think about traveling during the holidays, it was a chat filled with memories of “OMG” moments, a lot of laughs and the realization that we need our creature comforts! Read on for Team TME’s must-haves that will have you arriving in style and looking beautiful all season long.

Holiday Hair Exclusive With Celebrity Stylist Julien Farel

Studying under Jacques Dessange in France, collaborating with Frederic Fekkai, launching his own salons and haircare line, Julien Farel’s 30-year career has been far from dull! So when The Makeup Examiner landed the opportunity to have Julien create a sophisticated, effortlessly chic, 5-minute holiday hairstyle for our readers, we were honored and well, um … dancing in the streets!

Julien Farel spent 10 years with Dessange, prior to being recruited to run the training of Team Fekkai in both New York and Los Angeles. In 2001, Julien opened the first Julien Farel Salon in New York City, and has since opened salons in Miami and Cabo San Lucas. With A-list clients including Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Gere, and Rafael Nadal; Julien is one of the most prominent hairstylists in the world and the Julien Farel Anti-aging Haircare line has become one of the most coveted products lines by celebrities and beautynistas alike. So, are you ready for the Julien Farel 5-minute holiday look?

Julien Farel 5-Minute Holiday Hairstyle:

Inspiration: “Dancer” style bun from the runways
Style Time: 5 minutes
Materials: Hairpins, comb, hairspray, Julien Farel Anti-aging Haircare products as listed below

The key to jumpstart the styling process of this stunning holiday look begins with Restore ($33). It’s the first of its kind cleanse-treat-condition formula that replaces shampoo and conditioner on the day you use it. Quite frankly, as we go into the colder months Restore is going to be Team TME's best friend and you can view a Restore Tutorial of JF Products for perfect application and use.

  • Evenly distribute a small amount of Julien Farel Anti-Aging Inflate Styling Balm to create volume and fullness. Blow-dry hair until thoroughly dry.
  • Tousle hair with fingers and then part in the middle.
  • Tease at the top. Use hairspray.
  • Smooth the result with styling balm while still maintaining the rounded volume.
  • With both hands, create a low and loose “dancer” style bun. Secure with hairpins.
PRO TIP: Do not tighten the updo; the locks in the front should cover the ears.

There you have it! A simple style that is so elegant. Visit Julien Farel for salon information, more styling tips and the luscious Julien Farel Hair Care line!

Step Out with Stylish Locks This Holiday Season with InStyler

InStyler has tapped Emmy-Nominated Celebrity Hairstylist and InStyler Global Artist Dean Banowetz to help you celebrate the holidays in style.  Banowetz shares his favorite on-trend holiday hair looks -- the Mistletoe Top Knot and the Black Tie Twist -- that can easily be recreated at-home with the brand’s best-selling MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron.

“Each style can be customized to what each woman wants to help them look and feel their best,” says Banowetz. “I love accenting a style with unexpected, easy-to-find items, such as weaving in a piece of fabric to compliment your outfit or strands of tinsel for a festive look!”

MISTLETOE TOP KNOT - This look inspired by Actress Taraji P.Henson is perfect for day-to-night festivities or to get the most out of a second day style:

  • Prep hair with the MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron by smoothing and straightening from roots to ends.
  • Pull hair into a half-up half-down ponytail at the height you desire.
  • Create a mid-tension braid and secure 2-3 inches from the ends of the hair with a clear hair elastic.
  • Lightly tug the braid on each side to create volume and texture, pending how thick your hair is and how big of a braid you want.
  • Wrap the braid around the base of the ponytail to form a bun and secure with an elastic and bobby pins for any stray hairs.
*Dean’s tip: use matte bobby pins for extra grip!

BLACK TIE TWIST - An elegant take on boho waves, as sported by Actress Chloe Grace Moretz. It can work on many lengths of hair – from bob-length to long hair:

  • Prep hair by smoothing all over with MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron.
  • Divide hair into three large sections and use MAX 2-Way Rotating Iron to add loose waves before creating the style. Simply wrap individual sections around the barrel, close and let the rotating barrel polish the hair as it curls, and release the curl after 5-10 seconds.
  • Part hair down the middle and pull a large section on each side of the temple.
  • Begin twisting securely in an upward direction towards the back of the head, grabbing more sections along the side as you go, until the two twists meet.
  • Secure both sides at the middle back of the head with a neutral colored elastic or bobby pins for shorter hair
  • Loosen each “tornado” by gently pulling the twist.
*Dean’s tip: you can make this look all your own by doing one twist instead of two, or more than two twists; you can also have both twists meet at one side versus the middle.

Four Holiday Party Looks With Jane Iredale

We think that the holidays are about spending time with our loved ones and giving back to our communities -- and of course celebrating the ones we love with parties of all sizes. From intimate family dinner parties to large corporate holiday parties, we love the merriment and we like our makeup to reflect our festive mood.

When it comes to holiday eye makeup looks, we’re grabbing one product -- the Let’s Party Eye Shadow Kit! At first glance, this eye shadow palette may seem a little scary with the bright blue and deep green shades, but we promise this kit gives you the flexibility of subtle and daring looks. These are our four favorite holiday eye makeup looks using the Let’s Party Eye Shadow Kit. Each look has no more than four steps, and there are diagrams to show you where to place each shade.

Holiday Eye Makeup for Your Eye Color

The best way to make your eyes sparkle this holiday season is to choose makeup that complements your eye color. Luckily, the Let’s Party Eye Shadow kit has shades that work for people with every eye shade. Here are two simple looks for people with blue or green eyes and those with brown eyes.

Holiday Eye Makeup for Blue/Green Eyes

If you have blue or green eyes, try wearing the more purple shades in the Let’s Party Eye Shadow Kit — Spree, Wing-ding, and Hootenanny. Here’s how to create the purple smokey eye look in three steps.

  1. First, apply Spree from your lash line to brow bone with the with Deluxe Shader Brush.
  2. Then, use the Crease Brush to blend Wing-ding into the outer third of your lid and into the crease.
  3. Finally, apply Hootenanny, wet or dry, as an eyeliner using the Smudge Brush or Angle Liner/Brow Brush for a smokey eye look.

Holiday Eye Makeup for Brown Eyes

If you have brown eyes, you can go for a more intense holiday eye makeup look this holiday season. Our favorite trick to add depth to any eye shadow and customize the color is to first apply Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner as an eye shadow primer. In this look, we transformed the shimmery chocolate shade Hootenanny using Emerald Mystikol Eyeliner.

  1. First, blend Emerald Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner from lash line to crease using the built-in brush or a Camouflage Brush.
  2. Using the Crease Brush smudge out Hootenanny from lash line to crease.
  3. Press Shindig onto your eyelid with the Eye Shader Brush.
  4. Finally, use the Smudge Brush to apply Basic Black Eye Pencil into lashes.

2-Steps to Subtle & Smokey

The Let’s Party Eye Shadow Kit is great for vibrant, playful looks but it can also be used for more subtle, elegant eye makeup looks for the holiday season. Here’s one of our favorites that can be created in two simple steps.

  1. First, apply Spree from your lash line to your brow bone with Deluxe Shader Brush.
  2. Then, use the Angle Liner/Brow Brush to smudge Soiree (yup, the blue shade) into lashline, and you’re ready to party the night away!

The Best Holiday Blues

If you love to play with color and the holidays are your favorite time to venture outside the neutral box, then this look is for you. Bold eye makeup has been on trend for the past few seasons, and we love it!

Though we wouldn’t recommend this as an everyday look, the blue-hued holiday eye makeup look would be beautiful if paired with a simple monochromatic outfit. So, pull out your favorite charcoal silk, slip dress and grab Let’s Party because this look is a show stopper!

  1. First, apply Soiree from lashline to crease with the Deluxe Shader Brush.
  2. Using the Crease Brush, apply Hootenanny to the outer corner of your eyelid into the crease.
  3. Finish the look by applying Onyx Mystikol Powdered Eyeliner to your top and lower lashes. Smudge it out with Soiree using the Angle Liner/Brow Brush or Smudge Brush.

All products are available online at jane iredale.

Top Holiday Hair Tips From Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for "corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience, be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.
  2. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken's new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!
  3. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!
  4. Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass, which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.
  5. Brunette Beauty: To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or ColorExtend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.

Redken products can only be guaranteed authentic when purchased from a salon. To locate a Redken salon please visit Redken online.

Is It Time To Throw Away Your Makeup?

With all of the gorgeous holiday collections launching, and all of us sure to acquire more makeup into our personal collections, Team TME thought that it was a good idea to remind our readers about the fact that makeup has expiration dates. This was brought to light for us when we were discussing our recent Halloween celebrations and one person's amazing Halloween makeup. A few people shared that they had been determined not to use their “good” makeup and were kind of bragging about the amount of “old” stuff that they'd used for their costumes.

Expired makeup is a serious point of contention for our editor. And this is why… eight years ago she’d had a rather serious six-month ophthalmology ordeal due completely to the use of out-dated mascara. We’re not talking about 10-year old mascara, we’re talking about mascara that she’d had for about four months! However, the mascara had been purchased at a much earlier date leaving a huge question to how old it truly was. So yes, she was a makeup hoarder… with multiple closets filled with every conceivable beauty product one can think of. She has long since been cured of her eye issue and her cosmetics hoarding!

Although her ordeal happened long ago, due to the hundreds of products that Team TME reviews it is never far from any of our minds… she’s always reminding us… and now we’re reminding you. Yes cosmetics can be expensive, but all cosmetics have a shelf life! The bottom line is that cosmetics are developed to last about a year. However, since makeup comes in contact with germ-prone areas like your eyes, mouth and fingers -- contamination can occur at any time. First rule of disposal … if a product has changed color, consistency, or has a bad odor, throw it away!

The Makeup Examiner’s Guidelines For Cosmetics’ Expirations:

Foundation and Concealer can last up to a year if you keep your fingers away from the bottle. Opt to use a makeup brush or sponge for application. But think about it, do you use the same shade all-year round? Probably not. Therefore, by the time you come back to the shade that you use for summer, it’s going to be expired/contaminated!

Finishing Powder and Highlighter usually have a 2-year shelf life, but no matter TME has yet to meet a woman who doesn’t do the “double-dip” with loose powders and that compact that you’ve been carrying in your purse for “touch-ups” … needs to go.

Pencil Eyeliner and Lip Liner can last several years, but you need to sharpen them before each use, especially lip liner since it comes into contact with your mouth. This of course goes to the same theory as foundation, as you’re most likely not sporting the same shades all-year long.

Lipstick and Lip Gloss can last up to a year, but always throw away any lip product if you’ve been sick. This includes lip balm.

Mascara and Liquid Eyeliner should be thrown out after three months. The tubes for these products are a breeding ground for bacteria. And never “pump” your mascara wand into the tube! If you need to “pump” the wand, you need to but new mascara!

Eyeshadow, despite the fact that it’s usually made of a similar formulation to other powders, eyeshadow is constantly in contact with your eye area and therefore giving to a greater risk of transferring bacteria back and forth, so dispose of eyeshadow after three months.

Cleansers and Moisturizers often contain fatty acids, which can turn rancid. Dispose of them after six months.

Nail Polish is probably the one beauty product that won’t necessarily go bad due to bacteria, but nail polish will eventually go bad. If you see a separation of lacquer and pigment, it’s time to say bye-bye.

Professional Tips:
  • Purchase Dates – To keep track of the purchase date, grab a sharpie and write it on the product!
  • Do Not Share Your Makeup!

As a general rule, for contamination prevention and better overall cosmetic application use a blender or makeup brush to apply your cosmetics. Regarding the tools that you use; dry product makeup brushes should be washed once per week, wet product makeup brushes (like foundation and lip brushes) after each use, and invest in disposable makeup sponges. If you don’t know the proper way to clean your makeup brushes, check out “How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes”. If you’re bummed out at the prospect of disposing of your favorite cosmetic, keep in mind that nothing is worth risking your health for and cleaning out your makeup bag makes room for brand new splendid fall/winter shades!
