Get The Look: Katy Perry and Issa Rae at the 2018 Met Gala

The Makeup Examiner Team is thrilled to be sharing the beauty breakdown of COVERGIRLs Issa Rae and Katy Perry. Last night, the ladies’ amazing makeup artists, Joanna Simkin (for Issa) and Michael Anthony (for Katy) gave us the scoop on how they created their flawless red carpet looks for you and your readers. The looks both incorporate the NEW TruBlend Matte Made Foundation, COVERGIRL’s most inclusive shade range to-date -- including 40 different shades across the skin tone spectrum.

“I wanted Katy’s skin to have a matte finish so we could control the highlights on the rest of her face. The new COVERGIRL TruBlend Matte Made foundation was perfect for this because it would stay on all night but also be comfortable, while giving her that matte finish we were going for. It really gave the perfect smooth canvas to let her eyes and lips stand out and glow. She looked very heavenly and ethereal – perfect for tonight’s theme! “I used the darker shades of the new COVERGIRL Peach Punch palette on the hollow of her eyes and went straight across towards the end of her brow, and the effect was that her eyes looked very wide and open. I also used the champagne color on the center of her eyes to make them really pop.” – Michael Anthony

COVERGIRL products used:
  • COVERGIRL TruBlend Matte Made Liquid Foundation - Shade L30 (Golden Ivory) & L40 (Classic Ivory)
  • COVERGIRL Vitalist Healthy Setting Powder – Shade Classic Ivory

  • COVERGIRL Easy Breezy Brow Micro-Fine + Define Pencil – Shade Honey Brown & Soft Brown

"We wanted her skin to be ethereal for the theme but matte photos, so I used a big thick fluffy brush from the center of her face and worked my way out. I started from the middle to provide coverage and then blended it to the edges to create a subtle glow. For her eyes, I used a matte brown all over from the COVERGIRL Chocoholic palette, then added shimmery all over, and finished by glossing the top to create dimension. This gave her a slick eye look, and gave the appearance that she emerged from heaven." – Joanna Simkin

73rd Annual Golden Globes Beauty Edition

Award season is officially underway with last night’s 73rd Annual Golden Globes and The Makeup Examiner has all of the looks from your favorite stars. From Katy Perry to Amy Adams, Sophia Bush to Taraji P. Henson and Jennifer Lopez to Amy Adams. And, we have the looks straight from the most famous celebrity stylists on the globe!

Katy Perry Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By Makeup Artist, Todd Delano

Get The Look!
  • For Katy’s Golden Globe look I began by prepping her skin with COVERGIRL TruBlend Primer for Combination Skin. Next, I applied Outlast Stay Luminous Foundation in Buff Beige to give her a luminous look that would last throughout the award show. I warmed up her skin with TruBlend Bronzer in Medium and added a pop of rosy color to her cheeks with TruBlend Blush in Medium Rose.
  • The eyes were the main focus for Katy’s look so I began by blending the new TruNaked Eye Shadow Palette in Nudes using the matte colors over the eyelid. These palettes are incredibly smooth, really blendable and deliver awesome color! I then did a thick cat eye using TruNaked Waterproof Eyeliner Duo in Mocha Ebony. No eye look is complete without big, voluminous lashes, so I used two coats of COVERGIRL Plumpify Mascara by blastPRO. This mascara has become a staple in my kit, because it lifts the lashes from the root so they appear darker, fuller and more noticeable – definitely a new favorite!
  • To complete Katy’s look, I wanted her lips to go seamlessly with her soft pink gown, so I applied Colorlicious OhSugar! in Sprinkle, which gave her the perfect wash of pink that nicely brought everything together.

Rooney Mara at the 2016 Golden Globes by Red Carpet Image Maker, Adir Abergel

The Look: A de-constructed braided updo with an amazing artistic flair that wowed on the red carpet.

Inspiration: Adir wanted both hard and soft to play a role in this look. The romance of the dress and the great lines inspired him.

The Breakdown:
  • Adir first started by applying a light oil on dry hair and then started to flat iron the hair completely straight.
  • Then he created a parting from ear to ear along the crown. He pulled the first section up, first applying a light hold gel into hair and then pulled it into a high ponytail securing it with elastic.
  • Next he took the rest of the hair and pulled it into a very low ponytail, again applying a light hold gel to create a shiny texture from roots to the beginning of the ponytail.
  • Focusing on the ponytails, he applied some beach, drying it and roughing up the texture.  Once he established the duality in textures; the shiny roots and the rough ends, he was ready to braid the ponytails.
  • He took the top section and braided it tightly.  As he reached the ends he merged the top section with the bottom and continued the braid into the second section.  He braided the second section all the way down and secured it with cotton string.
  • He then applied some texture spray to the braid and opened up the braid for a more deconstructed finish.
  • The look was finished with hairspray, making sure the front of the hair had no flyways.

Julianne Moore Golden Globes Red Carpet Makeup Look By Elaine Offers for L’Oréal

Inspiration: “Julianne is wearing an amazing blue sequin Tom Ford dress – just liquidy and glamourous.  She didn’t want anything too dark, smoky or matchy-matchy to compete with the dress, so we went with a more natural, fresh eye and lip.”

  • Elaine started by prepping skin with Revitalift Volume Filler Serum, and then added bit of Revitalift Daily Volumizing Moisturizer; both set in while Julianne got her hair done
  • To control shine, Elaine tapped Revitalift Miracle Blur just in the T-zone and chin areas
  • Next, she blended True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup in Porcelain/Light Ivory all over the face; it’s a personal favorite of hers for its easy buildability.  To further conceal and brighten, she turned to Visible Lift Serum Absolute Concealer in Fair, and added warmth, shape and dimension to the jaw and cheekbone with Infalillible Pro-Contour Palette
  • On the apples of Julianne’s cheeks, Elaine combined Visible Lift Blur Blush in Soft Berry and Soft Pink, and accented the inner eye and bridge of nose with True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator in Golden
  • Elaine shaded eyelids with dusty, rose tones from the Colour Riche La Palette in Nude, and for added twinkle, Infallible 24H Eye Shadow in Endless Pearl was applied in inner corners
  • To create depth, she lined tight to lashes with Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Charcoal and smudged with a brush.  Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Brown was used in waterlines to sharpen up natural eye shape
  • Elaine curled lashes, applied a few coats of primer and topped off with Voluminous Superstar Mascara
  • Lips were finished off with a hydrated kiss of nude-pink color using Colour Riche Lipcolor in Gilded Pink

Julianne Moore Nails by L’Oréal Paris Global Manicurist, Tom Bachik

Inspiration: “Julianne wore a dark blue, beautiful Tom Ford gown on the carpet tonight. We wanted to contrast the gorgeous hue and keep her nails simple with a full coverage nude shade.”
  • First, Tom filed nails into a classic round shape
  • He next applied L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Color in Walk on the Beach to Julianne’s nails. Once dry, he applied L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail Color in Top of the Line for the top coat
  • Tom advises maintaining a manicure using L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Facial Oil; a drop on each nail 1-2 daily will keep nail color looking fresh and shiny, and cuticles hydrated

Jennifer Lopez Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By Lorenzo Martin for L’Oreal

Inspiration: “This evening, Jennifer went for a classic Hollywood look with her hair slightly flipped and parted to the side.”

  • Lorenzo, first washed Jennifer’s hair with L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner For texture and volume, Lorenzo sprayed L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Air-Blown Texture Mist to add body to the blow out
  • Using a small round brush, he then blow dried hair in small sections
  • Next, Lorenzo sprayed the hair with L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Blow Out Heat Spray
  • Using a 1” barrel curling iron, he curled the hair in one direction, pinned it and let cool
  • He then added a bit of shine using L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Lustrous Oil Serum on the front and ends of hair
  • Lorenzo finished the look by brushing out the hair and setting with L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray

Jennifer Lopez Nails by L’Oréal Paris Global Manicurist, Tom Bachik

Inspiration: “Jennifer wore this really cool yellow dress that was classic d super chic. We were really inspired by this color and because Jennifer’s look was so glamorous, we wanted to keep her nails clean and chic.  We chose a deep burgundy red solid nail to compliment the yellow tone of the dress.”

  • First, Tom filed nails into a classic round shape
  • He next applied L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Nailcolor in Always a Lady to Jennifer’s nails. After dry, Tom applied the top coat side of the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Nailcolor and let dry
  • Tom advises maintaining a manicure using L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Facial Oil; a drop on each nail 1-2 daily will keep nail color looking fresh and shiny, and cuticles hydrated

Jennifer Lopez Makeup by Mary Phillips for L’Oréal Paris

Inspiration: “If you saw the Giambattista Valli dress, you’ll instantly get old Hollywood glamour with the shape and even the mustardy, marigold color. The cape and the diamonds, it is perfection. Her skin and that lip color are the hallmarks of this look. It’s very elegant, gorgeous, and beautiful, while still being very modern and today. We’re always experimenting with her looks, and I think that tonight perfectly reflects that, with this classic, old school dose of beauty.”

  • Mary first applied Armani Prima Eye and Lip Contour Perfector on the upper eye lid and around all around the mouth and lip, as lips should be just as hydrated as skin
  • Next, she created a natural 3D effect by layering sheerer colors of L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation (C5.5 NATURAL TAN, 5.5 Perfect Beige, and W3 Nude Beige)
  • She used darker shades in the Infallible Pro Contour Palette in 814 Medium along the jawline, underneath the cheekbones, on the temple and hairline of the forehead and along the nose. The highlighter hue was applied to the center of the forehead, nose, directly above the jawline, and underneath the brow bone.
  • Mary’s self-proclaimed “holy grail” blush, L'Oreal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Blush in Spiced Plum C7-8, was added to the apples of cheeks for a fresh pop of color and extra dimension
  • On eyelids, with special attention to brow bones, is L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Eyeshadow Mono in 306.  Shade 201 is the backdrop color applied in the crease and 205 is added at the center of the upper lid and along the lower lash line
  • She drew a very, very thin line of L’Oréal Paris Infallible Black Velvet Liner on the top lashes only, and concentrated on making the line a little fuller at the ends without “winging out” too much, as that can tend to look costume-y with the rest of the look.  Mary finished the liner look by applying L’Oréal Paris Infallible Matte-Matic Liner to the upper and lower lashlines, making sure to get in between lashes to add drama in an understated, “un-heavy” sort of way
  • In order to achieve long, lush eyelashes that had the perfect hint of depth that wouldn’t compete in any way with the lip, Mary primed and coated lashes using L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Superstar Mascara
  • Mary mixed three lip shades, building up colors in different areas, applying darker colors to the outside of the mouth, and then working her way in. She wanted the lips to be dark but not vampy, and also have dimension and not come across as a one-note color. She customized the lip just for Jennifer using L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in ROUGE ENVY, NUDE ALLUDE and FORBIDEEN KISS for a very full lip effect, that was neither too wet nor matte

Taraji P. Henson Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By Ashunta Sheriff

Inspiration: “To accentuate Taraji’s white Stella McCartney dress, we decided collectively (as we often do), to go for a clean and fresh look and  have it paired with sultry eyes and lips. This look is not only chic, but sexy and effortless; perfect for anyone who wants to play as a goddess for the night.”

  • First, Ashunta started with a clean and moisturized canvas and applied the Revitalift Miracle Blur as a primer for a smooth makeup application
  • Next, she applied True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation in C5.5 all over her face and neck
  • To follow, she gently applied True Match Concealer in Medium/Deep Neutral under brow bones, eyes and down the bridge of the nose to create a natural highlight effect
  • To avoid an oily T-zone, Ashunta gently patted on True Match Powder in C6
  • As a first step for the eyes, she applied Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Sunset Seine all over the lid and followed with Colour Riche Eyeshadow in Café Au Lait on the creases only
  • For a dramatic lash, she applied three coats of Voluminous Superstar Red Carpet Mascara on both the bottom and top lashes. “It's a two-step mascara that creates sexy full, thick lashes in the blackest of black shades.”
  • She lined both the upper and lower lash lines (staying out of the watermark) using Infallible Black Velvet Liner. “This really outlines Taraji’s beautiful almond-shaped eyes and makes them stand out.”
  • Once the eyes were all set, Ashunta moved on to cheeks, gently applying Visible Lift Blur Blush in Soft Pink using her fingers onto the  apples of cheeks for a dewy and fresh result
  • She outlined Taraji’s lips using Colour Riche Lip Liner and finished filling in with Infallible Pro-Matte Gloss in Bare Attraction
  • Her last and final “red carpet ready” step was to spritz Infallible Makeup Setting Spray for a long lasting finish

Brie Larson Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Hairstylist, Mara Roszak

Inspiration: “I really wanted Brie’s hair to have an elegant, feminine feel, but still look fresh and young – because she is. We knew we wanted to style her hair down to accentuate the shape of the dress. We chose to go with a sleeker top, with a little bit of a wave at the bottom. The goal was to achieve a gorgeous, healthy hair look with high shine.”

  • After washing with Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner, Mara prepped the hair with Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Nourish Lustrous Oil Serum all over and then parted Brie’s hair to the side
  • Next, she blow dried the hair with a round brush to create a smooth look
  • After hair was dry, Mara pin curled the bottom and let them set for a few minutes before gently brushing them out
  • With a 1 ½ inch curling iron, she curled the hair up to the bottom of the ear lobes
  • Next, Mara again brushed out the curls and applied Advanced Hairstyle SLEEK IT Strand-Smoother Serum Spray and a tiny bit of Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Transforming Oil-in-Cream for added shine
  • The look was finished with Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold

Olivia Wilde Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By L’Oréal Paris
Celebrity Hairstylist, Mara Roszak

Inspiration: “Olivia’s look was all about modern and sexy, but with a little bit of a twist. To best complement her dress, we wanted to keep hair behind the shoulders, so thought a super cool, effortless low ponytail was the way to go.”

  • Mara washed Olivia’s hair using Advanced Haircare Extraordinary Oil Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Next, hair was prepped with Advanced Hairstyle BOOST IT Blow Out HeatSpray and rough dried
  • Once hair was dry, Mara used a 1 ¼ curling iron to wave Olivia’s hair
  • Next, she applied Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray and used fingers to break up the waves
  • Mara then gathered hair into a low ponytail, pulling hair apart a bit and wrapping a piece of hair around the ponytail; she pulled a few pieces out to frame the face
  • To lock in the look, Mara sprayed all over with Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold

Lea Michele Golden Globes Red Carpet Beauty Look By Celebrity Stylist John D.

Lea wore a glamorous white Michael Kors gown, which inspired John D. to create a classic braided look. “We wanted to complement the sleek hourglass silhouette of the dress and decided that a chic, center-part braid paired perfectly with the overall look.”

  • Prep towel dried hair by raking a dollop of TRESemmé Climate Control Mousse from roots to ends to provide grip and texture for creating the braid.
  • Blow dry hair in sections, using a large round brush to add body throughout.
  • Once dry, create a center part and brush all hair toward the nape of the neck and secure into a low ponytail.
  • Divide ponytail into three even sections and braid into a traditional three-plait braid, securing the end with a small elastic.
  • Apply a small amount of TRESemmé Climate Control Mousse to fingertips and smooth any flyaways by directing hair down from the part and behind the ears.
  • Spray TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Frizz-Free Hold Hairspray all over to set the style while providing extra hold and shine.

Katy Perry at the 2015 GRAMMYs Get The Look With Jake Bailey

Still riding her post-Super Bowl performance high, KatyPerry shined on the red carpet at the 57th Grammy Awards, held on Feb. 8. Katy wore an outfit fresh off the Paris Couture runway, a crystal-embellished, sheer dress by Zuhair Murad. Her gorgeous Red Carpet Look was created by TME favorite Jake Bailey

Jake's Inspiration: "Katy and I decided on a dewy rose/nude palette for [last night's] look. This is what I call a 'balanced' look ... all key features are in play. Eyes, cheeks, and lips so one does not outdo the other. Often makeup looks are 'all about the lips' or 'all about the eyes' with the other features playing a supporting role. This is an ensemble cast of colors."

Katy Perry Grammy 2015 Get The Look:

Skin: I matched Katy's skin to COVERGIRL Stay Fabulous Outlast3-in-1 Foundation in Natural Beige and buffed a small amount evenly all over her face and neck using a flat tipped kabuki style foundation brush. I then lengthened and arched her brows using COVERGIRL Pow-Der Brow + Liner in Medium Brown.

Eyes: I began the eye look with COVERGIRL Eye Shadow Quads in Blooming Blushes. I began with the darkest shade blending it into the crease and outer corners of her eyes to elongate and add depth. I then used the second darkest shade along the middle of her lids, the third shade on the inner lid and the lightest shade as a highlighter concentrated on the innermost corners of the eye and to highlight the brow bone creating a multidimensional eye in soft complimentary colors. I then created her signature "cat eye" using COVERGIRL Bombshell Intensity Liner. I finished the eyes with two coats on the top and bottom with COVERGIRL Full Lash Bloom by LashBlast Mascara.

Having finished the eye I touched up the skin a bit and dusted her lightly with COVERGIRL Clean Powder to set. I then took the paler shades from the COVERGIRL Clean Glow Blush compact and swirled it onto the apples of her cheeks for a warm glow. I then took the darkest shade and blended it into the hollows of her cheeks to accentuate her bone structure.

Lips: I finished the look by coating her lips with a warm nude lipstick called Sultry Sienna from the COVERGIRL Colorlicious Lipstick collective and topping it with just a touch of COVERGIRL Colorlicious Lip Gloss in Melted Toffee for shine.

CoverGirl Katy Perry Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show Get The Look

Katy Perry rocked out with her halftime show performance for Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1. In case you didn’t know, the New England Patriots won. We will admit, despite Yvonne’s familial connection to the NFL … we didn’t watch the game. What can we say? We just wanted to see that halftime show … admit it … some of you did just the same! Celebrity makeup artist, and TME Favorite Jake Bailey gave us the complete how-to for Katy’s look and we are sharing it with TME readers!

Jake admitted that he was both excited and nervous: “Today is one of the most exciting days of my career! Knowing my work would be seen by millions and millions of people I've been understandably nervous. Katy's performance had multiple costume changes so I needed to create a strong look that would complement all of her outfits, as there was absolutely no time for a touch up in between the quick changes. It’s the Super Bowl after all!” Jake opted to go for a classic Katy look -- elongated cat eyes, lots of mascara, super sparkly gold and silver glitter, and a bold red lip for glamour and showmanship.

I wanted her to glow and sparkle for her big moment in just nine steps! ~ Jake Bailey
  1. To create a sheer and flawless canvas I began by buffing a dime size amount of CoverGirl Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation in Natural Beige all over her face and neck.
  2. For an elongated cat eye I used CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Black Onyx and painted a glitter adhesive just above the black liner and carefully placed a mix of gold and silver glitter on the adhesive with a tiny eyeliner brush for precision.
  3. Then I applied CoverGirl Eye Shadow Quads in Blooming Blushes to add warmth and dimension. I love this palette because it takes the guesswork out of getting gorgeous eyes, it has number for the shades – 1,2,3,4 – so I know just how to apply! I used the fourth shade to define the crease and the first shade to highlight the lids.
  4. I finished the eye look with an aggressive lash curling and two coats of new CoverGirl Full Lash Bloom by LashBlast Mascara in Very Black that left her lashes voluminous and touchably soft throughout her performance! No time for flakes during this performance.
  5. To give her brows shape and structure, I added CoverGirl Pow-der Brow + Liner in Dark Brown.
  6. For extra dimension, I warmed her cheeks using CoverGirl Clean Glow Blush in Roses using the lighter shades on the apples of her cheeks and the darker shade in the hollows of her cheeks
  7. Then I added CoverGirl truMAGIC Luminizer to her cheekbones and brow bones for a shimmery glow.
  8. Moving on to the lips, I lined and shaped her lips using CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lip Liner in Hot. I then applied a coat of new CoverGirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Seduce Scarlet - truly a classic red, for a classic Katy look.
  9. I topped it off with a tiny dollop of CoverGirl Lip Lava in Mauva Lava for a fun and bold lip look!

There you have it! A look appropriate for the biggest game of the year! You can grab your Super Bowl worthy CoverGirl products at mass retailers across the globe!

Katy Perry 2014 Grammy Looks From The Pop Princess’ Style Team

Lester Cohen/Getty
Everyone walking the Red Carpet at Sunday’s Grammy Awards definitely made a statement. But among the masses, Katy Perry really stood out and had the most transformative look that began with whimsical on the Red Carpet and morphed into sultry for the performance of her hit “Dark Horse”.

Katy, as always, was stunning and luckily The Makeup Examiner has Katy’s full beauty breakdown … straight from her expert beauty team! Peruse through the slideshow for your favorite look and the complete how-to!

Katy's 2014 Grammy Red Carpet Hair Christopher Polk/Getty
Celebrity Stylist Renato Campora shares, “Katy wanted to wear her hair up and I was inspired by the soft, romantic look of her dress”. First I sprayed her hair with the Herbal Essences Naked Sheer Shine Mist and then blew it out to a sleek, polished finish. Once her hair was dry, I pulled it into a tight, high ponytail. To add more volume and texture to the ponytail, I sprayed the Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo throughout the length of her hair. Then I twisted the ponytail and wrapped it around the base of her hair to create the crown. I secured the crown with bobby pins and misted the hair with the Herbal Essences Naked Flexible Hold Spritzer to polish her look and set her style in place.

Katy's Red Carpet Beauty Christopher Polk/Getty
Katy Perry 2014 Grammy’s Red Carpet Beauty by Jake Bailey - “Katy had a very clear idea of what she wanted for the Grammy’s this year. She wanted sexy eyes; elegant lashes and she wanted to GLOW! I was quick to agree as I had seen the ethereal gown she was going to wear – stunning!,” shared Jake.

I started by prepping her skin with Olay’s new Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream. This is perfect to use under makeup as it delivers lots of moisture but still feels lightweight and foundation glides smoothly over it. Once the moisturizer had absorbed, I got to work on the skin. Since we were going for maximum "glow" I mixed equal parts CoverGirl BB cream and CoverGirl TruBLEND Liquid Foundation on the back of my palm before buffing it all over her face and neck with a soft brush for sheer coverage and a polished glow.

I started the eye look by painting a delicate line onto her lashline and a subtle “cat eye” wing in the outer corners of her eyes using CoverGirl Bombshell Liquid Liner. I then coated her lashes with Bombshell Volume Mascara, top and bottom. I used the first coat to get that volumized look and then applied the second coat for the intense jet-black wet lash look. I then applied Bombshell Shine Shadow in Gold Goddess into the crease of her eyelid and highlighted her lids and brow bones with Flamed Out Shadow in Blazing White. I finished the eye look with a strong brow and a coat of clear mascara to hold them in place.

Once I finished with the eyes, I warmed and highlighted her complexion using CoverGirl TruMAGIC Sunkisser and Luminizer. I blended the Sunkisser along the hairline and into the hollows of the cheeks to add warmth and dimension. I then took the Luminizer and used it to add a golden glow to her cheekbones, tip of her nose and just above the cupid’s bow of her lips. Once I set the makeup with CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder, I dusted a little bit of shimmery coral blush on the apples of her cheeks.

I finished the look with a fresh coral/pink shade called "Heavenly" from the CoverGirl LipPerfection collection and tipped it with a touch of balm for extra shine.

Performance Look Fredric J. Brown/Getty
Katy Perry 2014 Grammy Performance Look by Jake Bailey - “Once Katy walked the red carpet it was time to take her into the performance look. The performance was going to be dark and dramatic so we needed to make a change but had very little time. I made a quick change by adding a strip of spidery false lashes and adding another coat of Bombshell Mascara for extra intensity. I took my CoverGirl Bombshell Liquid Liner and extended her eyeliner outward to look a little more ‘wicked’,” shared Jake.

The fastest way to dramatically change your look is always the lips. We went from a fresh coral pink to a deep cranberry and she was instantly transformed from ethereal red carpet bombshell into a sultry witch. The shade we chose was “Euphoria” also from CoverGirl LipPerfection. She liked the color so much that she kept it on for the rest of the show as it went perfectly with her post performance outfit.

Katy Perry 2014 Grammy NailsGetty - “Katy wanted something really simple and chic to go with her red carpet dress and her performance look. We chose a light pink shade called “Everbloom” from the CoverGirl Outlast Nail Gloss collection. It offered just a subtle hint of color to keep the focus on her gown and flawless face,” shares Celebrity Manicurist Kimmie Kyees.

Jake Bailey Reveals Secrets To Katy Perry’s AMA Look Exclusive!

Katy Perry kicked off the American Music Awards (AMAs) Sunday, Nov. 24 with some serious Perry power. Taking to the Nokia Theatre stage in Los Angeles to perform her latest single, “Unconditionally,” Perry donned traditional Japanese dress and was joined by dancers, also donning traditional costume, for the live performance of the latest single off her album, “Prism”. But prior to taking to the stage, Katy rocked the Red Carpet in a stunning black strapless Oscar de la Renta gown, reminiscent of old Hollywood chic.

The Makeup Examiner caught up with Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey, who created Katy’s look for both the Red Carpet and her 2013 AMA performance and in an exclusive, Jake shares how he created Katy’s classic Red Carpet and whimsical performance looks.
Kay Perry’s Red Carpet Look: “The moment I saw Katy's beautiful Oscar de la Renta gown I knew we would do a red lip. Pairing it with black liner and lots of lashes we created a look that is ‘classic Katy,’” said Jake.

  • I started with a sheer application of CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation in Buff Beige #825. This foundation is perfect for the red carpet because it provides full coverage, but can be blended sheerly for light yet durable coverage. It lasts forever and the SPF 20 is great for a daytime red carpet event because [celebrities] have to stand in the sun for so long!
  • For the eyes I started by creating a classic Hollywood eye line using CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner in Black Fire #410. I love this pencil because you can create the look of a liquid liner but it's much easier to apply. I accentuated the crease of her lid using Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel #330 and finished with the NEW Bombshell Volume Mascara in Very Black #800 – it creates extreme volume!
  • I then set the foundation with a light dusting of CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder in Light #330 and warmed the apples of her cheeks with Clean Glow Blush in Roses #100
  • I finished the look with a classic bold red lip, using CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot #305 with matching liner. I used the liner to perfect her lip shape before applying color

Katy Perry’s Performance Look: “For Katy's performance we created a look inspired by her recent trip to Japan. This was a dramatic look and we only had a short amount of time to make the change so I had to work fast,” said Jake.

  • I started by dusting her all over with a theatrical powder from Ben Nye called “Super White” to pale out her complexion as quickly as possible. On her lips I refreshed her CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot #305 and used the liner to make her lips more bow shaped.
  • I applied CoverGirl Checkers Blush in Classic Pink #110 all over the sides of her face concentrating the most pigment on her temples. I finished her look with triangular lashes I created by cutting into a particularly large false lash with small cuticle scissors to create the angular shape. This created her dramatic stage look!

Katy Perry ‘Unconditionally’ Get The Look Exclusive from Jake Bailey

Katy Perry released the official video for her power ballad, “Unconditionally,” on Nov. 20 and the fresh-faced CoverGirl looks the essence of romance. In a TME exclusive, Celebrity Makeup Artist Jake Bailey shares the step-by-step for Katy’s timeless look.

The creative direction to create the look was a collaborative effort, proving that the 29-year-old pop diva is very much in control of all aspects of her career, which is one of the reasons that Perry was tapped to represent CoverGirl.

“For this video, Katy and I wanted to create something romantic yet dramatic to reflect the style and lighting of the video. For this set up I chose to go with alabaster skin, ethereal pink cheeks and a deep matte lip for dramatic impact. I kept the eyes simple with a coat of black mascara and a light dusting of warm taupe eyeshadow,” shares Jake.

I first prepped her skin with Olay Fresh Effects “Long Live Moisture” Satin Finish Moisturizer. Since this was a matte look the satin finish was ideal under foundation to keep it looking fresh and matte minimizing the need for powder reapplications throughout the shoot.

I perfected her skin and lightened it a shade using CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-In-1 foundation in Classic Ivory. This foundation has great coverage, so I only had to use a small amount and spread it thinly all over her face and neck using a small flat tipped kabuki style foundation brush. The "outlast" aspect is ideal for long shoot days as it really does stay put requiring minimal touch ups.

Before applying blush I finished the foundation with a light dusting of CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder in Fair. It’s important to powder before applying blush so that the blush will blend easily and evenly. I then swirled CoverGirl Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink all over her outer cheeks and temples.

For her simple eye, I first blended a sheer amount of CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Melted Caramel across her lids and into the crease. I finished the eyes with a coat of CoverGirl’s brand new Bombshell Volume by Lash Blast mascara in Very Black to her top and bottom lashes. When you have big expressive eyes like Katy, sometimes all you need is a coat of super-dark mascara to make them pop.

I finished the look with a deep cranberry lip. I mixed equal parts CoverGirl LipPerfection in Euphoria and Tempt to create the perfect shade. I then blotted her lips with a powdered tissue to set and mattify the lip.
