‘Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup’ Book Review

Written by Bésame Cosmetics founder Gabriela Hernandez, “Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup” is a book that goes beyond a love of makeup or essays of “how-tos”. This 224-page hardcover book offers the reader an insight into the history of beauty ... and how beauty is shaped by society.

“Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup” is an easy, yet fascinating read that begins with a historical timeline that dates from 33,000 B.C to 100 A.D. and opens the discussion of how beauty was viewed throughout this period of time. It’s interesting to look at a rather voluptuous fertility sculpture, dating around 25,000 B.C, and a realization that the sculpture would be viewed as representative of an obese woman by today’s standards. The timelines throughout the book would definitely appeal to any history buff or true cosmetics enthusiast.

Of course, “Classic Beauty” isn’t just a history lesson. It’s filled with over 430 images, detailing popular color palettes, beauty tools, and acceptable standards of beauty for both men and women. How many of you knew that it was the male gender of our species that first wore makeup? (Nope, beauty boys are not a new thing!) Through the use of timelines, the reader learns about the early formulas of cosmetics, its usage, and how very little things have changed when it comes to the dangers that humans will endure in their pursuit of beauty.

But, the book is far from a humdrum history lesson. The imagery is absolutely stunning. “Classic Beauty” makes for a must-have coffee table book -- on that basis alone -- with gorgeous imagery of legendary beauties like Clara Bow, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and modern beauties like Christie Brinkley, Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie.

As the book moves to the 20th Century, beauty enthusiasts are treated to step-by-step cosmetic applications of each time period. The reader is taken through popular styles and color palettes from the 1920’s to 2000’s and a look behind why certain styles were popular in their time, making this book the perfect reference guide. The book actually finishes with a complete guide for easy referencing.

“Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup” by Gabriela Hernandez is a must read for the beauty professional and an ideal read for the beauty enthusiast. A signed copy of “Classic Beauty: The History of Makeup” is available for $49.95 at major bookstores.

Shu Uemura Tint In Gelato Review

Hello beautynistas! The Makeup Examiner recently had the opportunity to review the latest offering from Shu Uemura -- Tint In Gelato -- and this just may become a must-have for spring! To begin with, Tint In Gelato is a multi-purpose product, which TME loves. After all, any product that cuts down on time from the morning makeup regimen is major. If you’re familiar with Becca Beach Tint, then you’ll have zero problems with the concept of Tint In Gelato, which is a lip and cheek stain.

Tint In Gelato ($28) has high pigmentation that is incredibly versatile. With a creamy gelato-like (hence the name) formula it is easily applied to the cheeks, or lips, via a doe foot applicator and offers buildable color. I really liked that the Tint In Gelato delivered a kiss of color to my cheeks and then a real pop of color on my lips.

Available in 12 shades, there is definitely a hue for you!
  • AT01 Cassis Delight
  • AT02 Sugar Plum
  • AT03 Fantasy Orange
  • AT04 Lemon Soufflé
  • PK01 Berry Berry
  • PK02 Milky Framboise
  • PK03 Sakura Creme
  • CR01 Blood Orange
  • CR02 Momo Sweet
  • CR03 Fancy Orange
  • CR04 Spiced Orange
  • BG01 Puffy Chocolate

The hues range in shades from Lemon Soufflé, which is a high gear golden glitter, to Berry Berry - a perfect summer pink and TME favorite, and Fantasy Orange (Big beauty trend again this summer). Shu Uemura Tint In Gelato is available exclusively online at Shu Uemura USA.

Three Simple Eco Tips For The Beautynista

Vitória Régia Water Lily at Pantanal Matogrossense, Brazil - Theo Allofs/Corbis

Being a green beautynista doesn't mean that you have to go full-tilt tree hugger, but you can take a few very simple steps to make your beauty regimen more eco-friendly. So, in honor of Earth Day, today April 22, and our lovely planet, The Makeup Examiner offers up a few tips that can be easily integrated into everyday life.

Bring Your Own Bag - Paper and plastic bags use a tremendous amount of resources and at least 80 percent of them never get recycled! Grab your own tote bag when you’re headed out on a shopping spree to Sephora. To make getting into the habit of using your own bags easier, keep them by the front door. Check out Global Girlfriend for chic totes that are Fair Trade and Eco-Friendly.

Drink Tap Water and Use Your Own Container – Bottled water is so passé. According to TreeHugger, out of the 50 billion bottles of water being bought each year, 80% end up in a landfill. 17 million barrels of oil are used in producing bottled water each year. Bottled water costs 1,000 times more than tap water. Drinking 2 Liters of tap water a day only costs 50 cents per year. Plastic leaches toxins into the water, which have been linked to health problems such as reproductive issues and cancer. A great option is a S’WELL Bottle ($25-$45) made from stainless steel or wood, which keeps drinks hot for 24 hours and cold for 12 hours, plus S’WELL donates to charities around the globe!

Go Green When You Clean – Isn’t it kind of counterproductive to use nasty chemicals to clean your home? You can Google DIY green cleaning products, but if you’re not the DIY type, check out Seventh Generation. Seventh Generation has been producing plant-based cleaners for over 25 years and offers an affordable alternative to toxic cleaners.

So, there you have three of the simplest ways to help improve the state of our planet. Of course I can’t write about green efforts without calling attention to greenwashing. Eco-Friendly, Organic, and Natural have become marketing buzzwords used to entice the consumer into thinking that they’re purchasing a “greener” product. If you truly want to become more eco-conscious, take the time to research brands -- from the products themselves to the processes used. Happy Earth Day Lovelies! Now, go check out one of the Earth Day festivities happening around the globe!

The beauty muse was the Iranian artist Shirin Neshat and we specifically wanted to capture the spirit of how she wore her eyeliner. This look is a modern interpretation of that, distilled in its simplest form. The definition is only along the bottom lash line and the boyish brow and glowing skin keep the look modern,” said James.

Estée Lauder Introduces New Skin Loving BB Cream and Highlighter

Courtesy of Estee Lauder
Estée Lauder has introduced the first luminous and long-wear BB makeup, which hit cosmetic counters on Feb. 1. Double Wear All-Day Glow BB Moisture Makeup SPF 30 and Double Wear Brush-On-Glow BB Highlighter are designed to sooth, refresh and protect the skin.

These two exciting new makeup additions have a nourishing, skin loving formula and sheer, natural coverage to provide a luminous, fresh-faced look that does indeed last all day. The new Double Wear All-Day Glow BB Moisture Makeup SPF 30 ($38 – available in 8 shades) is a creamy soothing BB cream makeup with a lightweight texture that delivers instant brightening to tired skin. The Makeup Examiner loves they super hydrating formula of Estée’s new BB cream, and of course the SPF 30 that will protect my face against the winter sun! Can’t wait to test out the lightweight formula through the warmer months … can’t wait for the warm weather to arrive!

New Double Wear Brush-On-Glow BB Highlighter ($27.50) is delivered via a brush tube, which offers one stroke highlighting. The formula is radiant, moisturizing and long lasting. Using Photo Optic technology, Double Wear Brush-On-Glow BB Highlighter brightens shadows, helping erase the look of fatigue and dark circles as it highlights facial features. Has it replaced TME’s favorite Benefit’s Watts Up? The verdict is still out, but Double Wear Brush-On-Glow BB Highlighter is certainly a contender.
