Winter Wonderful Men’s Grooming

Yes, we know that it isn't quite winter yet, but here in the Northeast it's expected to feel like that later today. So, with that in mind we thought "why not so the guys a little love?" It never escapes our attention that the guys like to be pampered just as much as we do. Team TME has found a few products that are perfect for keeping our suavies feeling and looking good throughout the season.

Lip Care
Big Cloud Wind Master Mint Leaf Lip Balm ($4) - Big Cloud is a new range of skincare products from Dollar Shave Club that is designed to protect you against the ravages of the winter elements. Wind Master Lip Blam protects and relives chapped, cracked lips from the drying effect of wind and cold. The soothing and nourishing formula contains moisturizing Shea Butter, antioxidant rich Tea Extracts, Sweet Almond Oil, as well as Vitamins A and E and is shine-free, for a completely matte application.

Skin Care
Razor Bump Blaster ($9.99) – Imagine no more bumps or ingrown hairs caused by shaving!  Razor Bump Blaster pads are easily applied every day to rid your face of those unsightly bumps for a smooth, healthy complexion.  Infused with glycolic and salicylic acids to hydrate and protect, this powerful formula prevents ingrown hairs making shaving, and the time in between shaves, painless.

Hair Care
Layrite Pomade Collection ($40) - Three cans of celebrities’ favorite Layrite Pomades in a gift box that makes it easy to give the gift of hair love. Developed to replace the wax that greasers would use in the SoCal rockabilly scene, water-based Layrite pomade holds like a wax, but washes out like a gel!

Men’s Winter Skin Care and Shaving Tips With Dr. Jeffrey Benabio

This article first appeared on TME December 2016

We can all whimsically sigh that summer is officially over and days lounging poolside are now a memory. As we go into the cooler seasons, it’s time to change up our skincare regimen and that goes for the guys as well. But, the transition from “fun-in-the-sun” skincare to protective winter skincare can be challenging and not every guy knows the healthiest way to achieve and maintain amazing skin.

Here at The Makeup Examiner, we are huge advocates for encouraging men to learn how to care for their skin and to embrace a little “luxury” time for themselves. This is especially true for the harsher conditions that colder months bring. With this in mind we again turned to skincare expert, Dr. Jeffrey Benabio for his expert advice.

The Makeup Examiner: From our experience, men tend to believe in the “one-size” product theory. As women, we know that different skin types require skin type specific products. What are the various skin types and what is the easiest way for our guys to determine theirs?

Dr. Benabio: I think too much attention has been given to “skin types.” Sure, some people are more prone to having dry or oily skin, but the truth is that our skin changes. There are many factors that can alter your skin, ranging from hormonal fluctuations and medications to weather changes and skincare products. For example, most people don’t suffer from dry skin in the summertime because of the excess moisture in the air. However, when cold weather approaches, there is less humidity in the air that causes many people to suffer from dry skin. Many men (and women) have “combination” skin with some dry and some oily areas.

Once skin type is determined, what is the best avenue for our guys to approach skin care for each skin type?

Dr. Benabio: For example, if a guy has consistently dry, itchy, red skin, then he should look for skincare products that are extra moisturizing, like Dove Men+Care’s Hydrate Face Wash that replenishes lost moisture in the skin. And he should avoid using bar soaps that can strip natural oils off the skin leading to further dryness. Instead, he should look for body washes with built-in moisturizers like Dove Men+Care’s Clean Comfort Body and Face Wash that cleanses skin and helps prevents further dryness.

As we move away from summer and toward the colder weather, what tips can you offer the guys to protect their skin against the elements?

Dr. Benabio: Colder weather means less moisture in the air and more dryness in your skin, so I always suggest moisturizing more frequently. While you may have a moisturizer or skincare routine that worked well in the spring/summer, it may not cut it in the winter months. To fight wintertime dryness, I recommend using Dove Men+Care skincare products. The Dove Men+Care Hydrate+ range, which includes a face wash and face lotion, helps moisturize dry skin and absorbs quickly without feeling greasy. The Dove Men+Care Aqua Impact Body and Face Wash, is made with ultra-light micro-moisture technology that’s clinically proven to fight dry skin. Guys shouldn’t forget about their hair, which can also become dry and brittle in the colder winter months. The Dove Men+Care Aqua Impact Shampoo is specifically designed to moisturize and strengthen hair and as an added bonus, smells great too.

Do our guys need to change up their shaving routine for the colder months? If so, what’s the best approach to attain a great shave?

Dr. Benabio: Again, it’s all about moisturizing. Dry skin can become flaky which can make for a rough shave. That’s why it’s important for guys to use a moisturizing shave gel like Dove Men+Care’s Hydrate Shave Gel that lathers quickly and softens skin leading to a closer, smoother, more comfortable shave. It’s also a good idea to consider using a calming post-shave balm like Dove Men+Care’s Hydrate Post Shave Balm that absorbs into the skin quickly, soothes any skin irritation caused by shaving, and is lightweight and non-greasy.

Dr. Benabio is Physician Director of Healthcare Transformation, Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, CA and advised on the creation of the new Dove Men+Care Expert Shave product line. Dove Men+Care is available at retailers nationwide.

Note: A special thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Benabio for again taking time from his extremely busy schedule to share tips with TME readers! Looking for amazing tips to keep looking fresh this holiday season? Checkout this video from Dr. Jeff!

Movember Moustache Manicures and Easy ‘Stache Stencils

Movember kicked off yesterday, Nov. 1! Last month, the guys supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month, now it’s our turn to support them with some conversation starting nail art. But before we take to our nail lacquer, it’s important to understand why we’re supporting the gentlemen and to get a brief history lesson about the Movember movement.

Founded in Australia in 2003 with a mere 30 guys participating, Movember has developed into a global movement with approximately 3 million registered supporters. The objective for the guys is to grow out their mustaches for the 30 days of November, with bragging rights as the “prize”. But, by growing out their mustaches, guys gain an opportunity to educate others and raise funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, which a whopping one in six men will experience their lifetime. For The Makeup Examiner’s gentlemen readers, who wish to participate, please visit Movember.

For us ladies, or even the guys, there are quiet a few trendy accessories to don and you can check out “Trendy Ways To Support Movember” for inspiration. Team TME has found that the Movember moustache manicure is the easiest avenue to show support for the Movember movement and to make this super simply, you can find a printable ‘stache stencil in the slideshow, as well as three-step style guide below.

Movember Moustache Style Guide:

1. Select a light base color so that your Movember moustache design really pops.

2. Choose one, or more, designs from the ‘stache stencil and place design either on the nail tip in a French manicure style, or mid-point and paint away.

3. Add a clear topcoat and you’re good to go.

Try each one of the stencils or change up the nail polish color. With Movember manicures, the possibilities are endless. For the hardcore nail art ladies, check out an easy freehand tutorial HERE. Just remember that whenever someone asks why you have moustaches painted on your nails, you let them know it’s for the guys!

While hemp seed oil is an ultra-moisturizing and emollient oil helps to calm, soothe, plump and hydrate tired, dry skin & hair, and also balances oil levels while providing antiaging benefits? The whole package!

Summer Skin Care Tips For Men

Team TME is yet convinced that men understand the importance (and actual enjoyment) of “luxury” grooming, let alone the basics of skin care. That’s not to stay that men folk are stupid, we believe that it’s a simple issue of not necessarily knowing what to do. We find it quite endearing when one of our “manly-men” stop by our office, poke around in the well-stocked TME closet and shyly ask what a particular men’s grooming product is for.

There seems to be some sort of silly shame in asking (kind of like for driving directions), so Team TME has put together a few easy to understand tips … just for the guys! The cooler months can leave your skin super dry, so if you don’t currently have a skincare regimen now is as good a time as any to begin one. A skin care regimen is seriously simple and you’re going to look and feel better once you begin one. Our editor had the opportunity to interview Hollywood’s leading stuntman, Bobby Holland Hanton, who offers quick and simple skin care tips. And this comes from a guy who has an insane schedule!

TME has also interviewed Dr. Jeffrey Benabio, on several occasions, who advises that you resist the temptation to take long, hot showers. Those showers may feel fantastic while you’re in there, but they’re actually hydration stealers. Limit your shower to no more than 15 minutes and keep the temperature warm. After your shower, you need to get moisture back into your skin so, we give you permission to steal your partner’s moisturizer and lotion… until you go buy your own!

Shaving is another issue for men. You guys just tend to be hairier. Dr. Jeff advises that guys prep their skin with a pre-shave gel. Because you’re dragging a blade across the skin of your face, you want to do everything you can to prepare and soften your stubble. Also, after-shave care is super important. Follow up your shave with a soothing balm that rehydrates skin.

You only get one face, so you gotta take care of your skin. Take care to use a moisturizer that contains SPF 30 or higher, use sunscreen when you’re playing outside (even in the winter), and don’t forget that pretty pout! Use a lip balm that contains SPF 30 or higher and a crazy but effective hack is to dab lip balm on your eyelids when you’re playing sports.

Summertime Scents That You Should Try

There’s been some sort of tomfoolery going on over the past few days … weather that’s attempting to have us believe that summer is gone and that autumn is here. Well, we know better. One brief respite from the dog days of August isn’t enough to convince us that there aren’t plenty of hot, humid days ahead. And if memory (and instinct) serve us correctly, that hot, humid weather is going to last well into the early fall.

You know that warm days and nights call for fresher, lighter scents that won't overpower you or those around you. No matter fruity or floral, one spritz of these fragrances will conjure up the sweet smell of summer and leave you feeling like the summer goddess (or god) that you are! So, with that in mind we thought that we would give mention to a few warmer weather scents that won’t break the beauty bank.

1.) Escada Taj Sunset ($49.99) - Exotic, juicy and summery as always, Escada Taj Sunset opens with notes of Alphonso mango, nectarine and blood orange. The heart features aquatic flowers with raspberry and pomarosa or Malay apple. The base consists of coconut, sandalwood and musk.

2.) DKNY Be Delicious ($36.99) - This is a bright, fresh and energetic fragrance, which matches a picture of a bold, but charming woman. The top features green notes, violet leaf, apple, grapefruit and magnolia. The heart brings tuberose, lily of the valley, rose and violet, while the base – sandalwood, amber and musk.

3.) Incanto Shine ($28.99) - Incanto is a fruity floral fragrance, in a colorful bottle adorned with carefree summer motives. It starts with fresh notes of pineapple, bergamot and passion fruit. Pink peony, freesia and peach are at its heart. The base consists of cedar, amber and musk.

4.) Marc Jacobs Honey ($53.99) - This buzzing fragrance energizes with the freshness of green pear and a bright splash of fruity punch and juicy mandarin. Orange blossom resides at the heart of the fragrance and mingles with the nectars of honeysuckle and peach for a note of sparkling femininity. Honey, vanilla, and smooth woods dry down to a warm, golden base.

5.) Vince Camuto Capri ($37.79)  - Capri Vince Camuto is an effervescent, floral-fruity fragrance with citrusy top notes of Violet Leaves, Juicy Pear, and Pink Grapefruit wash over a floral bouquet of Peach Blossom and Violet Flower to reveal a rich heart of Musk and Vanilla.  Like a cool Mediterranean breeze, this floral-fruity fragrance transports your senses.

6.) Tommy Bahama St. Kitts for Men ($22.39) - Refreshing and relaxing at its core, a zesty blend of Kaffir Lime, juicy Mandarin and tropical Star Fruit paired with Cedarwood, fresh Sea Salt and a Watery Accord, create an invigorating woody scent reminiscent of the sea breeze. The fragrance is rounded out with Driftwood, Ambergris and creamy Musk adding a salt swept warming effect like suntanned skin after a day in the sun.

7.) Vince Camuto Solare ($36.39) - A robust yet fresh scent profile is created by incorporating top notes of French Lavender, Juicy Mandarin, and Red Apple combined with Pimento Leaves, Wild Sage, and Cardamom and is anchored by a dry base of Sensual Musk, Tonka Leaves, Creamy Blonde Woods and Cashmere Woods.

Summer 2017 Beauty and Grooming Essentials Part Two

Hey! Before you run off to parts known and unknown to kick off what is going to be the best summer ever, we wanted to make sure that you had a whisper about the best beauty and men’s grooming essentials for Summer 2017. Check out “Summer 2017 Beauty and Grooming Essentials Part One” and read on for even more products that are going to make this season sizzle!

For The Guys: TME has always had a really strong male readership. We love that! And it was a specific endeavor on the part of Yvonne to bring the guys into the fold. We still find it kinda cute that the guys can be a little shy about asking questions. Don’t be! You deserve to pamper yourselves just as much as the ladies.

Our current favorites just for our guys … L’Occitane’s Cade Collection ($65) - rich with woody notes of juniper, sandalwood, pink pepper and rosemary, this set includes Cade Shaving Cream, Cade Shower Gel for Hair and Body and Cade After-Shave Balm. L’Occitane’s Mer & Mistral Collection ($75) – is bursting with zesty and sweet citrus, along with rosemary, pine and cypress! This is such a fresh and clean fragranced collection that had every member of Team TME in complete agreement that you need this for Summer 2017! The Mer & Mistral Collection includes Mer & Mistral Eau de Toilette, Shower Gel and Body Lotion. If you haven’t gotten one of Harry’s Shave Sets, treat yourself. A few years ago, Yvonne gave a Harry’s Razor to her “has everything, needs nothing” brother and he hasn’t used another brand since. Team TME’s Harry Pick; Harry’s Daily Face Wash ($7) and Harry’s Truman Razor Set ($15) that includes Truman Razor Handle, Foaming Shave Gel, 3 Blade Cartridges, and Travel Blade Cover. Rounding out our picks for the guys is the Evolutionman Sport Guy Kit ($80) that includes Nu Noir Face & Body Wash, Moisture Protect SPF 20, Lip Balm SPF 15, EVMAN Sport Bottle, and EVMAN Square Dopp Kit Bag.

Lovely Locks: Wouldn’t it be amazing if the summer breezes didn’t blow up our hair? Sun at the beach, chlorine poolside, humidity … oh vey! Before you resign yourself to donning that hat that you bought for Coachella, Team TME has a few other options for controlling unruly summertime hair.

Sun and After Sun Hair Care: Phyto Plage Protective Sun Veil ($30) – this lightweight sun mist protects hair and guards color from UV damage or Macadamia Professional Sun Shield Dry Oil Veil ($20) with its delicious coconut cream scent, this pre-sun treatment spray shields hair from harmful rays. When you’re done playing in the sun, Macadamia Professional After Sun Leave-In Repair ($20) is perfect, as it absorbs instantly and helps nourish summer hair.

Wash It Out: There are so many shampoos and conditioners, but a few new ones that we are loving for the summer are the TRESemmé Bontanique Collection that includes TRESemmé Bontanique Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.99 each) which are infused with coconut milk and aloe vera.  There is also Macadamia Professional Endless Summer Sun & Surf Shampoo and Conditioner ($20 each) that keeps hair protected against UV rays while you’re soaking up the sun … and against chlorine and salt while you’re splashing around in the pool and ocean. Our final recommendation is Phyto Plage After-Sun Rehydrating Hair & Body Shampoo ($24), which is the perfect one-step cleansing gel to wash away sand, salt, and chlorine from hair, leaving it deeply moisturized and super-soft.

Stylin’: Beachy waves are a timeless summer look. Actually, we saw a lot of beach waves during Fashion Week. The relaxed gentle wave seems to fit just about everyone – no matter face shape or hair length … and even hair texture. Beach or “Boho” waves are just as appropriate for the office as for the beach. To achieve the look, it begins with the correct styling products. Our current favorites; ALTERNA Haircare Bamboo Beach Summer Ocean Waves Tousled Texture Spray ($22) and the BEACHWAVER Pro ($199.99), an innovative professional rotating curling iron invented by celebrity hairstylist and TME favorite Sarah Potempa. If you’re looking for volume, Caviar Anti-Aging Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist ($28)!

Protect and Hold: Of course your only option for beautiful summer hair is not bound to beach waves. Peruse our Summer Beauty section for hairspiration and the tools for achieving those easy styles are plentiful. Our current favorites; Kérastase L'incroyable Blowdry ($40) to complete protect your locks; Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oleo Complex ($58), Phyto Phytolisse Ultra Glossing Finishing Serum ($30), Alterna Bamboo Kendi Oil Dry Oil Mist ($25), and Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Perfect Texture Finishing Spray ($28). For on the go, we love Bosley Pro BosRenew Volumizing Dry Shampoo ($19) and Macadamia Professional Style Extend Dry Shampoo ($25).

The Tools: Anything that makes our lives easier is a major plus, especially when it comes to our hair or makeup during the summer. Perhaps, these two collections maybe oddly paired but we loved these so much that we had to mention them to our favorite people … our readers! Artis Fluenta 9 Brush Set ($450) and the invisibobble Original Secret Garden Collection ($25), which is a limited edition collection of hair rings that are perfect for a sleek ponytail or pinless chignon.

Have a safe and amazing holiday weekend! ~xo Team TME

Life and Style Advice For The Guys From ‘The Style Guy’ Glenn O’Brien

This interview first appeared on The Makeup Examiner February 27, 2015

Despite having taken a backseat and focusing more on the behind the screens tasks at TME, when I was offered the opportunity to do a Q&A with a men’s style expert, I was pretty stoked. When I found out it was Glenn O’Brien … I was rather intimidated. Yes, you read that correctly. This woman, who is afraid of nothing, was actually scared at the thought of interviewing that esteemed gentleman. Glenn’s bio reads like a “How-To” on living life to the fullest, but hey … anything for the guys. Right? So without further ado, here is the interview with Glenn that gives stellar advice on how to do life … with style!

Yvonne P. Mazzulo: I recently watched a brief interview that you gave about “How To Be A Man”. In the interview you’d stated that “fashion is doing what everyone else is doing and style is what you are doing”. Do you believe that everyone should develop an individualistic approach rather than following what’s trendy?

Glenn O’Brien: I think that following one’s own instincts builds personality and confidence. Showing genuine individual style is part of what distinguishes a person from the crowd. It shows you’re not afraid to think for yourself.  But I’m not saying all fashion is bad. Over the last ten years men’s clothing has changed its shape, becoming slimmer, with shorter jackets and flat front trousers. That’s not a trend, it’s a direction. I think men should pay attention to directional shifts because they aren’t just novelties, they are real cultural markers.

Again referencing the interview, you stated that if you approach everything like an art project it would turn out all right. What advice do you have for the guys that aren’t so artistic?

Glenn: There’s a difference between being artistic and being creative and problem solving. I think the key factor in being effective in your work is really applying intelligence, logic and even instinct to the job at hand. Simply doing things the way they’re usually done isn’t going to lead to distinguishing yourself.

What advice do you have for the guy who is afraid to try anything new because he may make a mistake?

Glenn: Life is really a matter of learning by trial and error. Even if you’ve done your homework and prepared for something new, you still have to experience it and get a feel for it. A lot of the satisfaction we get in life comes from overcoming fear and facing challenges. And challenges are inevitable. You can try to hide from them, but they’ll find you eventually.

I have a housemate that’s just graduated from university. What advice can you offer for transitioning from “college-style” into the work force?

Glenn: You’re not going to follow the herd to the top. At the same time you don’t want to come off as a show off or a freak.  In college we tend to blend in with our peers and maybe we try to display character in a sort of juvenile, rebellious way. What works in Animal House or The Hangover isn’t going to work in Wall Street or Up In the Air.  Career is a whole new movie. Think big pond, not small pond.

You’ve spoken about dressing with a sense of occasion, which I completely agree with. Can you elaborate on that for my readers?

Glenn: I often see young couples where the girl looks really put together in a nice dress and shoes, with well-styled hair and makeup, and the guy is wearing an un-tucked t-shirt and Seinfeld jeans and sneakers. Evolution is all about life adapting to the conditions around it. If you’re not learning and adapting you’re not evolving.

How do you find your own style? Do you have a muse?

Glenn: My grandfather was a Naval officer and then a businessman and he was always well groomed and paid attention to detail.  I think I picked up a lot of ideas about style from Hollywood movies. Certain stars always looked good no matter what part they played -- Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, James Coburn … today we have Clooney. I see a lot of men doing interesting things, but they are usually subtle.  People think of dandies as show offs but the greatest dandy of all, Beau Brummell, said “If people turn to look at you on the street, you are not well dressed.”

What advice do you have for the ladies to help the guys achieve their best self?

Glenn: Ladies shouldn’t hesitate to recommend or gift products to their guys. Women often understand the difference the right products can make. I recommend the new Dove Men+Care face and hair ranges -- including the Deep Clean+ Face Scrub, Hydrate+ Pro Moisture Shave Cream, Sensitive+ Pro Moisture Shave Cream, Ultra Hydrating Cream, Thickening Spray Gel, Fortifying Styling Gel and Fortifying Styling Paste. The brand is helping men shine in their everyday “red carpet” moments (i.e. meetings, presentations, date night, etc.) with their collection of new grooming and styling products.

Men’s Winter Skin Care and Shaving Tips With Dr. Jeffrey Benabio
