Hollywood’s Sunless Tanning Expert Monica Blanco Shares Tanning Tips

Monica Blanco is one of Hollywood’s most sought after sunless tanning experts and has just released her new line of self-tanning products called Colour Couture. Monica is best known for her techniques to look 15 lbs thinner in a flash. Since her celebrity clientele couldn't always bring Monica with them, she created her coveted tanning system and is sharing her techniques with The Makeup Examiner readers!
Recognizing that we love the healthy glow of the summer sun, but not the unhealthy effects of tanning, check out Monica’s best-kept secrets to a perfect sunless tan.

Work from the Bottom Up – When applying Red Carpet Ready Sunless Tanning Spray ($38), Blanco recommends working from bottom to top and always ending with the face and neck so you don't get lines and wrinkles from looking down during the application process. Use a wipe or facecloth to remove excess product from hands and hairline where pigment may collect. Then apply moisturizer to these spots to blend the tanner in.

Moisturize & Exfoliate - We all know how important this is but it's especially crucial as you transition from winter to spring when skin is drier and more prone to dry, scaly patches. The key is to moisturize and exfoliate more than you normally would. Blanco recommends exfoliating at least 3-4 times a week instead of scrubbing at the last minute when you decide to tan. You won't be able to get as many dead skin cells off if you do it that way and the tan won't look as natural. Use an exfoliator like Colour Couture's Starlet Pre-Tanning Exfoliator ($28) which has plumb extract that will penetrate the skin's top layer and help eliminate 20% more dead skin cells than other scrubs. It also removes any leftover tanning product to you the perfect base.

Choose Your Trouble Spot - Example: “I wish my thighs looked skinnier. I have a muffin top or that bulge at the armpit that always seems to stick out.” Blanco recommends adding a double coat on these trouble spots, smoothing them out with moisturizer so no lines are noticeable. Anything that is darker appears firmer and more toned.

Pick your sunscreen wisely - Once you apply your self-tanner properly you want it to last as long as possible. That means moisturizing and using the proper sunscreen! Choose a great lotion with SPF of 30+ and skip the oils because, while hydrating, they will break down your tan prematurely!
