MAC Cosmetics NYFW Backstage Report

Check out all the looks from Carolina Herrera, Jeremy Scott, Libertine, Rag & Bone, Thom Browne, Zac Posen, Badgley Mischka, and Oscar de la Renta NYFE Spring/Summer 2016!

Redken SS2016 NYFW Tory Burch, Coach, Oscar de la Renta

Show: Tory Burch Spring/Summer 2016

"This look gives a nod to the late-50s, early-60s, but it’s not meant to be a completely retro idea. There’s a juxtaposition and slight sophistication to it with a little bit of height at the crown, which is super flattering, and then the messy, sexy knot, so it feels like these beautiful women came from somewhere exotic. It’s all about balance – the look is pulled together, but the formality is offset with the softness around the face and a bit of a wet finish.” – Guido

GET THE LOOK:

1. Spray Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through.

2. Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken stay high 18 high-hold gel-to-mousse throughout damp hair, focusing on the crown.

3. Blow-dry using a round brush, lifting the top section of the hair to create volume.

4. Backcomb the top section of the hair to create additional height and use hands to smooth hair into desired shape.

5. Use fingers to create a short, off-center part, and then pull hair back into a low ponytail and tuck behind the ears.

6. Mist the length of the ponytail with water and then twist it into a disheveled, messy knot, securing with hairpins.

7. Pull out a few strands of hair from the bun and around the hairline and mist again with water to add softness.

Show: Coach Spring/Summer 2016

“There’s always something so cool and effortless about the Coach girl. The look this season is very easy and real with a lot of natural, cool texture. I created a natural center part with my fingers, and then simply added some softness and richness with Redken’s One United before enhancing the hair’s natural movement with Redken’s fashion waves. It’s a really beautiful, modern look that’s attainable for the everyday woman, which we are seeing more and more on the runways today.” – Guido

GET THE LOOK

1. Start with damp hair. Create a natural center part with fingers, and then thoroughly spray Redken One United all-in-one multi-benefit spray all over hair.

2. Twist the length of hair into a loose, low bun, securing with pins.

3. Allow hair to dry naturally in the bun, then let down and tuck hair behind the ears.

4. Mist Redken fashion waves 07 sea salt spray all over, working it into the hair with fingers to enhance the texture and create additional movement.

Show:  Oscar de laRenta Spring/Summer 2016

“The look at Oscar De La Renta this season is all about softness, richness, ease and sophistication. It’s amazing how effective a ponytail can still look today, and how a beautiful, simple style can say so much. Before blow-drying the hair, I prepped it with Redken’s pillow proof blow dry express primer and satinwear 02 to protect it from the heat and get that rich, silky texture. The very short part gives a little bit of height in the back, which gives a softer silhouette. I tied a piece of ribbon with one loop, so it isn’t a full bow, around the ponytail, so it feels very romantic and feminine. It’s amazing how a little bit of ribbon can change a simple ponytail into sometime much more poetic and special, and you can really do that with any kind of material. Like we’ve been seeing at many shows this season already, it’s these small details and nuances that really make a simple hairdo new and modern.” – Guido

GET THE LOOK

1. Spray Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through.

2.  Apply a nickel-size amount of Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion all over hair, focusing on the roots.

3. Use fingers to create a short center part.

4. Using a round brush, blow dry the hair smooth, lifting the hair at the crown to create a bit of volume.

5. Gather hair into a low, loose ponytail and secure with an elastic.

6. Pull little bits of hair out of the hairline to create a soft, drooped shape around the face.

7. Finish by loosely tying a ribbon around the elastic.

Scentbird Perfume Subscription Review May 2015

As members of the “fragrance obsessed club,” we were rather intrigued by Scentbird. A subscription service that offers upmarket perfume?!? As one reviewer stated, “Scentbird is an incredible idea, whose time has certainly come!” Yes, we couldn’t agree more!

So, what is Scentbird and how does it work? Scentbird ($14.95/month) is a monthly fragrance subscription service, with subscribers receiving a .25 oz sized vial of perfume. Subscribers can choose their fragrance from Scentbird’s 350 plus perfume offerings or opt to receive Scentbird’s monthly-featured scent.

First month’s subscription is sent with a velveteen drawing string bag and sturdy, chic atomizer, as well as instructions for how to use the atomizer. Subscriptions are sent out on the 15th of each month. Consecutive months, subscribers receive a vial of their perfume, which we find to be brilliant as it less waste and better for the environment, and a postcard detailing the perfume.

The Scentbird website rocks an amazing interface. We have to mention this, as we’ve often been annoyed by certain subscription service websites with horrid navigation. Signing up was simple and enjoyable. A word of caution, once you go there you can expect to spend a bit of time perusing around … it happens to the best of us … it isn’t as if you plan to hang out on the site … it just happens because the site has a lot to see.

For May 2015 we opted to go with Scentbird’s featured scent, Something Blue by Oscar de la Renta, which arrived like clockwork on the 16th. And here is a prime example of why Scentbird is a phenomenal subscription service. First, the subscription arrived in a very timely fashion and secondly, we couldn’t find a decent sample size of Something Blue by Oscar de la Renta anywhere -- NO, a tiny “vial” sample is not worth the materials for which it is housed!

You simply cannot get a feel for any fragrance from a tiny vial, which is why TME doesn’t accept “press samples” of that size. With that said, you can purchase 1.7 fl oz of Something Blue for $85. So for $70.05 less, you can take the perfume for a 30-day “test drive” and if you don’t like it you haven’t lost out. By the same, Scentbird offers the easiest way we can think of to find your next favorite scent! You can subscribe to Scentbird by visiting its website.

Oscar de la Renta and Marc by Marc Jacobs Redken Recap

Show: Oscar de la Renta Autumn/Winter 2015

Lead Stylist: Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a look that combined elegance with ease for the runway at Oscar de la Renta’s Fall/Winter 2015 show. To put a modern touch on the classic French twist, Guido raked the hair back with his fingers, leaving comb marks, and then added shine with Redken’s Forceful 23 super strength hairspray and Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist.

“The look at Oscar de la Renta this season is very elegant and classic – very uptown chic. Though the finished look is very done, there’s a sense of ease to it. There are the lines that I created by raking my fingers through the hair to pull it back into the French twist, and the shine that I added with Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist. I prepped the hair first with Redken’s Stay High 18 because you need some grip and hold to achieve the style. The key here is to secure the French twist at the back of the neck, making sure it’s flat and tight against the head, which creates a super beautiful profile.” -Guido

Create the Look:

Step 1: Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse to damp hair and blow dry.

Step 2: Gather hair and rake with fingers to create comb marks, and then pull up into a

Step 3: French twist. Be sure the base of the twist is tight and flat against the head.

Step 4: Secure the French twist by pinning with open fasteners.

Step 5: Finish with a thorough spray of Redken Forceful 23 super strength hairspray for hold and lightly mist Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist all over for added shine.

 Show: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Referencing the revolutionary, rebellious style of the Guardian Angels from the 1980’s, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a style with perfectly defined texture to balance the berets seen on the runway at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2015 show. Guido created light, messy texture by saturating the hair with Redken’s Full Frame 07 all-over volumizing mousse and then allowing the hair to air dry, to enhance each girl’s individual style.

“It’s all about the revolutionary, rebellious girl at Marc by Marc Jacobs today. The Guardian Angels are kind of a reference point for the look, which has a very 80’s feeling. Each girl is wearing a beret with different symbols and badges, which really makes the style. The hair is very textured, which I created by saturating the hair with Redken’s Full Frame 07 mousse, scrunching it a bit with my fingers and then just letting it air dry to get that light, messy texture with just enough definition.” – Guido

Create the Look:

Step 1: Start with dry hair

Step 2: Dampen hair by misting water all over using a spray bottle

Step 3: Create a messy center part using fingers

Step 4: Apply Redken Full Frame 07 all-over volumizing mousse section by section to fully saturate hair

Step 5: Scrunch hair with fingers and allow to air dry

Step 6: Finish with a mist of Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist and put on beret or hat
