Top Holiday Hair Tips From Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for "corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience, be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.
  2. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken's new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!
  3. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!
  4. Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass, which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.
  5. Brunette Beauty: To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or ColorExtend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.

Redken NYFW Report Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham

To celebrate Alexander Wang’s 10th anniversary show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido enhanced each model’s individual personality with custom cuts, proving that there isn’t just one idea of beauty in today’s world.

“There’s really not one singular idea of beauty anymore, which is great and liberating. It’s all about bringing out your personality and adding little nuances here and there that really make a look feel more special and unique. Alex very much wanted to emphasize the realness – almost like the girls just walked off the street onto the runway in their own clothes.”

Each girl is really being left as she is. I cut a lot of the girls’ hair, not all of them, but you really wouldn’t know because many of them are new and you might not even know what they like looked like before. Some of the girls got layers, or an extreme bang or fringe, all things that are a bit more masculine to bring out more of a boyish quality, which creates a super cool feeling overall. After the cut, I just emphasized each girl’s texture with Redken’s wind blown 05 – it gives it a little volume and texture and lifts the roots and a little natural, downtown feeling, which is very much the Alexander Wang girl. Although all of the looks are different, they all really go together and create a cohesive feeling on the runway.” – Guido

1. Start with clean hair by washing with Redken Frizz Dismiss Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner.

2. Use fingers to create a natural part and then allow hair to air dry.

3. Liberally spray Redken wind blown 05 dry finishing spray all over  to enhance your hair’s natural texture, until desired effect is achieved.

Show: VictoriaBeckham SS2016 NYFW

Perfect for the everyday woman and the Victoria Beckham Spring/Sumer 2015 runway, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a sophisticated, simple style full of glamour and shine.

"Victoria is a very modern designer and she likes a very simple, easy sophisticated look. It’s very soft and pretty, but quite modern, without any specific references. First, I created a natural off-center part with my fingers so there’s an ease to it. Then, I blow-dried the hair with Redken’s satinwear 02 to get this great, smooth texture, and then twisted it back into a low bun, so that when you let it down it has this beautiful, natural movement with control around the head shape. Then, I just tucked the hair behind the ears and applied Redken’s new glow dry throughout the length to put a little bit of shine in the hair and get rid of any fly-aways. It’s a look that’s very easy for women to recreate themselves, which is what we’re seeing a lot on the runway in general and is very appealing for the everyday woman." – Guido

1. Spray Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through.

2.  Apply a nickel-size amount of Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion all over hair, focusing on the roots.

3. Create an off-center part with fingers and then blow-dry hair smooth.

4. Gather the length of the hair and twist into a loose, low chignon, securing with hairpins.

5. Allow hair to set in the chignon for 30 minutes to 1 hour, and then let down.

6. Apply 4 – 5 pumps of Redken glow dry style-enhancing blow-dry lotion throughout the length of the hair to add an instant shiny finish.

The Hairstyle To Beat The Heat With Chic

If the heat and humidity has you left wondering what to do with your hair, look no further than the Miu Miu Resort runway show! Redken Global Creative Director Guido created the ultimate unstructured topknot for the show, which also happens to be a perfectly chic style for when it’s too hot to let your hair down.

"The inspiration for the Miu Miu Resort show was the 80’s club kids. First, I applied Redken’s Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine to the hair, concentrating on the ends and the fluffy hairs around the hairline to give the hair an almost sweaty look. Then, I gathered the hair into a ponytail, twisting it into a loose unstructured, arrogant topknot. Pieces were pulled out to fall over the eyes like the girls had been dancing all night in a hot night club."-Guido

Step One: Apply 2 – 3 drops of Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine all over dry hair, focusing on the ends and pieces around the hairline

Step Two: Gather hair into a high ponytail and twist into a loose topknot

Step Three: Secure with an elastic, leaving the ends sticking out

Step Four: Use your fingers to pull out a few wispy strands around the hairline, sticking them to the forehead with a bit of water or additional Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine if desired

Step Five: Finish with a mist of Redken Control Addict 28 High Control Hairspray, focusing on the ends of the topknot that are sticking out to hold the shape

Please note, Redken products can only be guaranteed authentic when purchased from a salon.

Atelier Versace 2016 Get The Look

To enhance the romanticism on the runway at the Atelier Versace 2016 show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a natural, nymph-inspired style adorned with a leafy headband for a fantasy-like feeling.

"The look at Versace is very romantic, but still a little tough and rock 'n' roll. The girls look like beautiful nymphs in gorgeous dresses with leafy, whimsical headbands. It feels a little '70s in a way with the natural hair textures and long, loose waves that I roughed up a bit with Redken's Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray for a fantasy-like finish." – Guido

Get The Look:

Step One: Start with clean hair by washing with Redken Frizz Dismiss Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner

Step Two: Use a fine-tooth comb to create a clean center part

Step Three: Mist Redken Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray all over hair for added texture, and then allow to air dry

Step Four: Bend small sections of hair around a 1-inch curling iron to add body and movement

Step Five: Spray Redken Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray all over hair to enhance the natural texture

Rodney Cutler of Cutler Redken Talks Life, Style and Balance

Rodney Cutler - Cutler Salons and Redken Brand Ambassador

Take two busy people and try to coordinate a simple phone conversation. Not easy to say the least. But if you are ever waiting for a return call, leave your cell on your desk and head into the ladies room … trust me the phone will ring! So, as I sprinted into my office I saw that it was none other than Rodney Cutler ringing to finally proceed with an interview that took just seven days to coordinate. Hey, he’s a super busy person and me - well I have no excuse. ;) I digress.

I answered the phone to be met by a warm and apologetic greeting. As I spoke to Rodney, I kind of got the feeling that he is the type of person who has 1,000 things going on in his mind, but has the unique ability to focus upon what’s right in front of him. We chatted briefly about the commonalities of a busy schedule and then dug into the true purpose of the phone call … probing the brain of one of the industry’s most successful and intriguing stylists!

Yvonne P. Mazzulo: Successful businessman, artist, writer, educator, Iron Man and dad -- you’re a modern day renaissance man and seamlessly navigate it all. What advice can you offer to busy dads toward the work/life balance?

Rodney Cutler: For me, work never feels like work, I love what I do. But, it’s vital to prioritize. Make a schedule for what’s important to you. For me it’s work [to provide for my family], family and exercise. I do very little socializing outside of work.

As a stylist, we’re most familiar with your red carpet and runway work – gorgeous stylings at Fashion Week and you’ve stated that your esthetic is a fusion of hair and fashion. How does this translate to the everyday guy?

Rodney: The men’s market has changed so much. I find that men are curious, but don’t want to get stuck with the label of “metro”. I advise men not to be afraid to ask and to be yourself. (The advice of being yourself resounded throughout our conversation).

What do you see as on trend for guys this summer?

Rodney: Groomed and polished. Even men with facial hair are going for a more tailored look.

What encouragement can you offer to the guy who’s a little hesitant to update his style?

Rodney: Instead of a full overhaul, make small changes. I tend to dress more on the conservative side, but I like to add a little something of interest. For example, I’d purchased a pair of silver shoes that just simply didn’t work. However, I was able to buy a pair of silver laces and add them to a pair of black shoes. This gave my look a little edge without being over-the-top. Don’t be afraid to try something new or different, just be aware.

How do you find your own style? Do you have a muse?

Rodney: Instinct. I go with my own gut. Surrounded by fashion, I know what the latest trends are and I also know what’s going to work for me. Men tend to stay within their own comfort zone, be it product or fashion. Yet, we all have an instinct for what works for us. It’s just an issue of whether or not you act on it.

Parents, especially new ones, tend to have little time to spend primping and grooming. There’s a lot of support for moms, but it seems not so much for dads. What tips can you offer dads for a quick and easy grooming regimen?

Rodney: Read my Esquire column. (To this I laughed. But having read Rodney’s column, I can’t argue with that advice.)

Note: A very special thank you to Mr. Cutler for taking time from his schedule to share his expert advice with TME readers! We look forward to a future probing of the brain of one of our industry’s more interesting people.

Christian Dior Resort 2016 Collection Hair by Redken

To complement the destination-inspired designs of Creative Director Raf Simons, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created an easy, luxurious look for Dior’s 2016 Cruise Collection, which was presented at Pierre Cardin mansion on the French Riviera.

Guido’s trick to achieving the luscious locks? Simply wash hair with Redken’s All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner and let the hair air dry. Then lightly bend sections of hair around a large-barreled curling iron, apply a few drops of Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine from mid-lengths to ends and finish with a mist of wind blown 05 dry finishing spray.

“The hair for Dior cruise this season epitomizes an easy, natural texture. Each girl kept her individual texture and length. I just enhanced the shine a bit with Redken’s Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine and then sprayed wind blown 05 all over for a very beautiful, airy texture and a little volume at the roots.” -Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

Redken Products Used: Redken All Soft Shampoo, Redken All Soft Conditioner, Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine, wind blown 05 dry finishing spray

Wedding Hairstyles Straight From The Runway and Redken Global Creative Director Guido

Wedding season is upon us, and whether you’re the bride-to-be, a bridesmaid or a guest, your look isn’t complete without the perfect hairstyle! From elegant updos to windswept styles, Redken Global Creative Director Guido shares his looks straight from the runways of Fall/Winter 2015 Fashion Week that you can recreate for the big day! Check out the looks and how-tos from Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and Valentino.

The Elegant Updo - This Oscar de la Renta style is very elegant and classic – very uptown chic, but there’s a sense of ease to it. I prepped the hair first with Redken’s Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse. The key here is to secure the French twist at the back of the neck, making sure it’s flat and tight against the head, which creates a super beautiful profile.

A Charming Chignon - Guido achieved this feminine, beautiful hairstyle at Dolce & Gabbana using Redken’s Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray, which gave that soft, airy texture. But, the real star of the look is the jewelry in the hair. Placing various broaches, pearls and diamonds throughout the hair instantly add charm.

Naturally Chic - Guido created this very natural, rich look at Ralph Lauren by washing the hair with Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner and letting it air dry so it has that richness. Then, he used the curling iron to put a little bit of bend in the hair and sprayed Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray all over add texture. It has ease, richness and shine with just enough body to get that feeling of luxury.

Boho Braids - This look from Valentino is classic, feminine and romantic – perfect for weddings. Guido took two small pieces of hair from underneath the head on each side of the face and pulled them back into two little braids using Redken’s Braid Aid 03 braid defining lotion to add grip and texture, and then pulled out one strand over the face to add something a little more interesting to the eye.

Multi Pot in Conch ($18.35 – Limited Edition) can be used on eyes, lips, and cheeks. Bonus: Gabriel Cosmetics is a cruelty-free brand!
  • Stila Cosmetics, another cruelty-free brand, has lunched two amazing brow products! Courtesy of “it” girl Cara Delevingne, “boy brows” are in. But, you gotta keep ‘em tame and pretty. Stila Stay All Day Brow Gel ($34) comes in five shades and a dual-ended brush that lets you contour and define your brows. If you’re more of a pencil person, the Stay All Day Brow Pencil ($21) has a micro-point for a precise application.
  • For a super pretty pout, we found a super interesting brand … Vintage by Jessica Liebeskind. Velvet Lip Crayon in Vintage Rose ($22 – includes sharpener) is a perfect hue for spring. This matte color can be worn alone or punched up with Jessica’s Sparkling Lipgloss ($21). Vintage Sparkling Lipgloss in Papaya gives lips a beautiful glittery glow in a super on-trend hue.

Nails: No look is complete without a little lacquer on your paws. Meow!

  • Team TME looked at a lot of lacquer for our Spring 2015 Must Haves. When we found Londontown, we stopped looking. The Londontown Nail Lakur Spring 2015 Collection ($16 – each), which includes eight cream colors and four matching glitters, offers sophisticated hues that are on-trend, luxurious, highly pigmented and 5-free!

Blonding Trend At Forefront of Tracey Cunningham's S/S '15 Trends

Before Kim K dropped her major blonde ambition, Tracey Cunningham had already predicted the Blonding Trend! Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend which means spring is just around the corner. With that comes the desire to spring clean and “lighten” our diets, our unwanted baggage and now, our haircolor.

Looking ahead to Spring/Summer 2015 haircolor trends, Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist with a lengthy list of Hollywood starlets, reveals her inside scoop on the blonding trend that we are seeing on A-list stars, blonde and brunette alike. Chat with your colorist about how to incorporate Tracey’s trends.

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #1: Babylights Blondes
“It is all about going blonde this season, whether or not you consider yourself a natural blonde. A cool blonde like Gwyneth Paltrow, who has a gorgeous all-over color, can easily be elevated to another level by creating babylights, which has been my go-to blonding technique for many years that mimics the sun-kissed tones your hair took on as a child. Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol Base Breakers allow me to experiment with warm blondes like Charlize Theron by enhancing the undertones without taking away from the existing blonde shade.”

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #2: Brightened Brunettes
“So many of my brunette clients believe that blonde highlights are off-limits but it is in fact the opposite; highlights on a brunette create a gorgeous lift! With Jessica Biel who is a darker shade, I created a balayage effect using the Blond Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream on the ends. A wildly popular trend on the opposite end of the spectrum is a rich monochromatic look which is ideal for brunettes like Julia Louis-Dreyfus who want one solid color instead of dual tones. I love Redken’s NEW Chromatics Ultra Rich to get that monochromatic, rich-looking color with great coverage.”

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #3: Rich Red
“Deep, strong reds like Emma Stone are here to stay, both on and off the red carpet, with blondes like Kate Bosworth even making the transition to red! Redken’s NEW Carmin’R shades, featured in Redken Chromatics, Shades EQ Cream and Color Fusion, give me the versatility to customize red hues for all skintones and create everything from a rich cool ruby to a vibrant copper.”

No matter your natural shade, leave the salon chair looking and feeling like a celebrity by asking your colorist about Tracey’s above trend tips. To continue to protect your haircolor after your service, Tracey recommends using Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare or Blonde Idol Haircare to seal in colour and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.

Redken Milan Fashion Week Recap With Bottega Veneta and Versace

Show: Bottega Veneta Fall/Winter 2015

Playing up the personalities of the different pieces of Bottega Veneta’s Fall/Winter 2015 collection, Redken Global Creative Director Guido embraced individuality by giving each model her own unique hairstyle for the runway this season. Guido used Redken’s Guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse and Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray to enhance the hair’s natural texture before achieving a unique style that was created specially for each girl.

Redken Products Used: guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse, wind blown 05 dry finishing spray

Create The Look:
  1. Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken Guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse to damp hair, working into the hair from roots to ends
  2. Use fingers to create a messy middle part
  3. Blow dry hair at the roots to add some volume, but let the length of the hair dry naturally
  4. Thoroughly mist Redken Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray all over dry hair to add some texture
  5. If desired, pull hair back into a low ponytail or twist into a loose chignon, securing with a U-shaped pin

Show: Versace Fall/Winter 2015

“This season, Donatella wanted each girl to be herself, but very glamorous, modern and sexy, which is always the look here at Versace. The hair is kind of natural in a sense, but in a way it feels very rock-and-roll. The key is keeping the personality – some girls have bangs and there are different lengths and textures to bring as much personality to the runway as possible. I used a curling iron to put a little rough texture in, so some girls are a bit wavier or more texturized than others. Then I drenched the hair with Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist so it’s saturated in shine and very rich-looking to get that nighttime, urban feeling. The final look is very glamorous, but in a nonchalant way.” -Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

Redken Products Used: guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse, forceful 23 super strength hairspray, Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist

Create The Look:
  1. Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken Guts 10 volumizing spray-foam mousse to damp hair, working into the hair from roots to ends
  2. Blow dry hair at the roots to add some volume, but let the length of the hair dry naturally

Prada Fall 2015 Ready To Wear Redken Recap

Show: PRADA Fall 2015 Ready To Wear - Milan

Putting a twist on the classic Prada look, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a young, sophisticated updo adorned with beautiful jeweled barrettes for the Fall/Winter 2015 runway show in Milan. Recreating the look from Prada’s Men’s show, Guido used Redken’s Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse and Fashion Work 12 versatile working spray to pull the hair into a high, tight updo. Then, Guido hand-placed Prada’s bejeweled barrettes on each model for the perfect finishing touch.

“The look at Prada this season is really a redux of the hair that I created at the Men’s show, but this version is a little bit cleaner and very young, but in a sophisticated way. There’s always an offness to the classic beauty of Prada, and that’s the feeling that we achieved with this style. It has a slightly 50’s or 60’s kind of feeling, which is always Prada-like, but it’s still very modern and sort of futuristic. I used Redken’s Stay High 18, which is a very strong gel to mousse formula, to blow dry the hair up against the roots to pull it into this very high ponytail in the middle of the head. Then, I covered the elastic securing the ponytail with a piece of hair, and flipped the hair over into this little updo, holding it in place with the jeweled barrettes. I finished the style with Redken’s Fashion Work 12 hairspray to clean the hair up and hold the style in place. The loose ends of the ponytail give you that feeling of youngness and easiness, which adds to the modernity of the look.” - Guido

Alberta Ferretti Ready To Wear FW15 Redken Recap Milan

From the dark a winter sun arose on the backdrop of the Alberta Ferretti show on Wednesday, February 25. Did this stop the show? No. However, the stellar stylings were indeed showstoppers!

Show: ALBERTA FERRETTI Fall/Winter 2015 Milan Fashion Week

Hair: Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

To enhance the romance of Alberta Ferretti’s Fall/Winter 2015 Collection, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a simple, soft low ponytail for the runway. To achieve a silky smooth texture with natural movement, Guido blow dried the hair using Redken’s Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion, and then pulled it back into a loose ponytail for a romantic, pure feeling.

“The Alberta Ferretti woman is always very romantic and beautiful. This simple look is just that – it’s very romantic and pure without being too theatrical or overworked. I blow dried the hair using Redken’s Satinwear 02 to get a soft, smooth finish that isn’t too product-y, and then I pulled the hair back into a loose, low ponytail so it’s very baggy. I didn’t leave any pieces of hair loose around the face so that I could create that nice droop in the front and over the ears. There’s some natural movement throughout the length of the ponytail, which adds to the softness and the romance of the collection. -Guido, Redken Global Creative Director
