Celeb Stylist Sarah Potempa Shares Last Minute DIY Halloween Hair Tips

With Halloween this week you may still be looking for that perfect last minute look. Luckily, if you’re in need of some inspiration celebrity hair stylist, Sarah Potempa has created two DIY looks that are trick-or-treat worthy and easily replicated using a step-by-step 30 second video tutorial.

For all the caffeine addicts out there, Sarah created her take on everyone’s favorite Coffee Mermaid by creating effortless waves using the Beachwaver Pro ($199) and adding clip on extensions that have been dyed green using a Lemon Lime Hair Chalk from Splat. Compliment this look with an emerald lip and eye, attach a cut out paper crown with bobby pins and voila you now are Coffee Mermaid swimming among the endless order of Pumpkin Spice Lattes!

We've had another year of the unicorn; Sarah’s unique take on this mythical creature can be created in 3 easy steps! First, style with the Beachwaver Pro and brush out the waves with paddle brush to get voluminous body. Then apply Splat Hair Chalk in Pink Hearts, Dusty Rose, and Silver Moon ($5.99 each) to create an ombre rainbow affect in minutes with the temporary hair chalk that works on all hair colors.

Apply each chalk in small sections of the hair to get vivid color, use a paddle brush to even the color and finalize the look. Finally, to create a unicorn horn, take strands of hair extensions and apply Splat Hair Chalk to them and wrap them around Styrofoam or a Beachwaver Half Up ($9) creating a DIY horn and then pin to your hair. Finish off with some glitter, make up, and colorful accessories and you are ready to spread glamour, peace, and love this Halloween!

TME Tip: If you’re looking for the perfect red lipstick for Halloween, we just discovered ECRU New York’s Velvet Air Lipstick in Mulberry ($24)! While Sarah has given us a few amazing (as always) ideas, we believe that any look can be spiced up a little. The Mulberry shade is a rich, sensual burgundy that transform from satin to matte with the swipe of a finger!

Happy Halloween! ~xo Team TME

Valentines Day Beauty Tips From The Experts

We at TME are freaking out because we’ve got Valentine’s Day beauty tips from our favorite top celebrity beauty experts -- from Celebrity Stylist Charles Baker Strahan to Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa and our beloved Clairol Color Director James Corbett to Dr. Jody Levine! We have everything that you will need to look, and feel, amazing no matter what you’re doing for Valentine’s Day… or night… whether you’re doing a romantic night in, a big night out or prowling with the girls!

Romantic Night In:

“You don’t need to go crazy with styling your hair, but it should definitely look and feel soft, nourished and hydrated. Try using a treatment such as the Herbal Essences Wild Naturals Intensive Treatment to give your hair an extra bit of love to make your strands touchable for [the love of your life]!” -Celebrity Stylist and Herbal Essences Brand Ambassador, Charles Baker Strahan

Big Night Out:

Charles Baker Strahan says it’s all about the curls! “There’s nothing more fun than voluminous curls for a big night out”. Whether you’re enhancing your natural curls or giving your straight hair a twist, here’s how to get sexy 'ringlets'".

  • After stepping out of the shower, use a mousse like Herbal Essences Naked Volumizing Soufflé. Mousse has a function, which allows hair to dry in a somewhat stationary position. When hair isn't jostled around in the drying process it is less likely to produce frizz
  • Use a diffuser! People with straight hair that doesn't “hold a curl” often blow their hair out with a brush and a blow dryer, making the hair straight and less likely to curl... stop doing this! Allowing the hair to dry in a basket diffuser with the high heat setting and low wind speed allows your mousse to force out the excess moisture and maintain any and all natural body or movement in the hair
  • If you have hair that is hard to curl you should do a set. You can use your curling iron to heat the hair and place the curl wherever you'd like but then use a roller clip to hold the curl in position while it cools

Celebrity Stylist and Aussie Brand Ambassador, Sarah Potempa also suggests curls for a night out, but Sarah’s take is all about that sexy polished wave look! “Polished Waves with a red lip combo is probably my favorite look for a big night out,” shared Sarah.

Polished Waves How-To:

  • To achieve this classically beautiful look, start off by curling your hair in the same direction
  • For a more retro look, curl your hair in towards your face. After you curl, spray a nylon/boar bristle brush with a flexible hairspray, like Aussie Sprunch Hairspray and fully brush out the curls. Doing so will bring all of your waves together and create a smooth, long-lasting style
  • To give the ultimate frizz-free finish, apply Aussie Miraculously Smooth Anti-Frizz Cream starting from the ends and working up into the roots

Girls Night Out:

Clairol Color Director (and TME <3) James Corbett offers these top-notch color tips for GNO!
  • This winter, special occasion hair is all about textured looks! On top of styling and cut, hair color can make a big difference when creating texture.
  • Use Nice ‘n Easy’s Hair painting Kit to paint in some lighter strands around your face; this will give hair a multi-dimensional look. Nice ‘n Easy’s Hairpainting Kit is easy to use at home, and works on all hair colors.
  • After coloring, ditch the blow dryer, and style hair in natural looking waves. Your new look will be effortlessly chic. (Perfect for a romantic date or Girls Night Out!)

Sarah Potempa offers: “For a girls night out, a dry shampoo such as the new Aussie Total Miracle 7N1 Dry Shampoo, is great to keep in your bag or desk at work for an instant touchup from day to night. Not only does it help to absorb excess oil and refresh your style, but also gives your hair a bit of texture if you want to pull your hair into a high ponytail or fun braid.”

We love the suggestions from our favorite celeb experts and you can find more beauty tips in TME’s CoverGirl section! Since we’re smack in the middle of winter, we thought it’d be a good time to check in again with Dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine and get the best skincare tips for Valentine’s Day … and the rest of the winter season!

Winter Skin Care and Prep – Courtesy of Venus Dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine:

Hair removal in the winter:

  • Many women skip shaving during the winter months. The trick to removing an abundance of hair is making sure you follow the right steps.
  • First, I recommend hydrating your hair with warm water and waiting two to three minutes from when you step into the shower before shaving. This will make the hair softer and easier to [remove].
  • Next, be sure to apply ample amounts of moisture rich-shave gel like the new Venus & Olay Shave Gel. Incorporating a shave gel is an important step in getting a great shave. Not only does it allow your razor to glide better and easier over the skin, but it also helps lubricate the hairs – so they’re soft and stand up at attention, making them easier to cut.
  • The type of razor you use is also crucial when it comes to removing a lot of hair. Make sure you use a high quality razor, with five sharp blades – so you’re getting a smooth, ultra-close shave.
  • Finally, shave with light, gentle strokes and exert as little pressure as possible – this will help reduce your chances of skin irritation.

Ensuring the closest shave:

  • To get the closest shave use a 5-bladed razor like the new Venus Swirl, which moves like no other to cover every unique curve and contour, helping to shave those hard-to-reach places and capture hairs that other razors might miss.
  • Lather up with a shave gel like new Venus with a Touch of Olay shave gel before shaving to ensure the razor glides easily over skin. Shave gel also helps you keep track of where you’ve shaved to avoid missing any spots.

Stay hydrated: While moisturization is great, you should be properly moisturizing at the right times with the right amounts. The best way to keep your skin beautiful is by keeping it adequately hydrated. Having dry dead skin is the foundation for irritation. When skin is dry, it is compromised and compromised skin is more prone to experiencing symptoms of irritation.

  • Moisturizer is much more effective on properly exfoliated skin and shaving is actually a good gentle way to exfoliate your legs. Shaving everyday with the right razor can help exfoliate dead skin. Try using the Venus Swirl for best results.
  • Put on a light moisturizer right after you shower. This helps to rehydrate your skin with moisture that was lost from showering. Using a moisturizer that has shimmer in it can also give your legs subtle shine to highlight its natural contours.

Avoid lengthy hot showers: Lengthy hot showers can actually dry your skin. The heat from the shower makes the skin's oils soften, much as butter softens when heated. Granted, this isn't an altogether bad thing; that same oil barrier traps dirt and sweat, which leads to body odor. Still, without those oils, the moisture in your skin easily escapes, leading to dry and itchy skin. The longer and hotter the shower, the faster this process takes place and the more moisture you're likely to lose. Try to keep your showers lukewarm or shorter.

TME’s Tip: Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and relax while doing so!

Step 4: Loosely curl the remaining hair in the ponytail with The Beachwaver Co. Beachwaver S1.25.

Step 3: Make two 3 strand braids on either side of the head and add them to the ponytail, securing with a clear elastic 1 inch below the first. Create two more 3 strand braids one inch below, securing with a clear elastic.

Mixed Braids and Waves:

Step 1: Divide hair into clean, even sections with The Beachwaver Co. Darby Clips and curl with The Beachwaver Co. Beachwaver S.75 from the bottom layer up.

Sarah Potempa Styles Our Favorite Celebrities

One of Team TME’s favorite stylists, Sarah Potempa, is back at it with the beachy waves that are too perfect for summer! Celebrity hairstylist and inventor of The BEACHWAVER, Sarah Potempa has styled some of our favorite celebs this past week (Lea Michele, Mandy Moore, and Kaley Cuoco) and we have the step by steps straight from the queen herself!

Lea Michele

Step One: Beachwaver the entire head with The BEACHWAVER Co. Beachwaver 1.25

Step Two: Pull the hair back into a sleek centered ponytail

Step Three: Spray the hair with Aussie Sprunch Mousse + Leave-In Conditioner and lightly tease for volume

Mandy Moore

Step One: Take a quarter size amount of Aussie Sprunch Mousse + Leave-In Conditioner and work it through damp hair. Next, blow-dry your bangs down using the Beachwaver Pro Dry and the On Set Styling Brush. Once the bangs are dry, pin them off to the side using a small clip, allowing the hair to set. Continue to loosely dry your hair with the Beachwaver Pro Dry

*Pro tip: Always blow-dry your bangs first before doing the rest of your hair to avoid cowlicks

Step Two: Using Darby Clips, divide your hair into sections. Curl the sections of hair using The BEACHWAVER Co. Beachwaver S1. Mandy's hair was curled away from her face on the left and away from her face on the right, so that her curls are going in the same direction on each side of her head

Pro tip: Leave about an inch of your ends out when curling, in order to achieve effortless looking waves

Step Three:  Finally, spray hair with a flexible or texturizing hairspray like Aussie Flexible Hold Hairspray, and run your fingers through the curls to give hair additional volume and natural movement

Kaley Cuoco

Step One: Apply mousse to wet hair then blow dry using the On Set Styling Brush

Step Two: Divide hair into sections with Darby Clips then Beachwave with the The BEACHWAVER Co. Beachwaver 1.25 and finish with a flexible hold hairspray

What’s Sizzling for Summer Style? Summer 2014 Hair Trends

Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of SUMMER! Like most, this writer is so over the harsh "polar vortex" of this past winter and so ready for some serious fun in the sun. Now that the warmer weather is here, it's time to truly transition our lovely locks into summer style. But, where do we begin with fresh and inspiring ideas?

Taking a look at the runways for Spring/Summer 2014 we saw a myriad of interesting looks. Of course translating those runway looks can be a bit of a challenge so this writer deconstructed a few of her favorites from the runways, as well as turning to her friend, Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa. Sarah was kind enough to share what her clients have been asking for. So, what hairstyles are truly sizzling for summer? Read on to find out!

Waves (and not just at the beach) are super hot this summer. Both the Bohemian Beach Wave and Polished Wave styles are so on trend for Summer 2014 and easier to achieve then you may think. Bohemian Beach Waves -- Seen at Versace and Marc by Marc Jacobs -- This laid back look is easy to do. For the lazy ladies, creating this look is as easy braiding slightly damp hair (two large braids - one on each side) before you hop into bed. For those with medium and shorter lengths, you can still achieve these soft, face-framing waves. Apply a minimal amount of leave-in conditioner, blow-dry with a diffuser, spritz with a texturizer and go!

Sarah's Pick: Polished Waves - "This is a look that celebrities are always requesting," shared Sarah. And a simple, chic wave is definitely in style this summer. To get the look, prep your hair with a good deep conditioner. The added moisture and shine is perfect to counter the extreme heat and all the salt and chlorine your hair will be exposed to this summer. The concept behind a simple wave is that the curls always wrap away from your face to open it up and look effortless. After you curl your hair, apply a flexible hairspray to a boar bristle/nylon brush to smooth the curls into waves.

Low Ponytail -- Seen at Altuzarra and Jason Wu -- Summer is always amazing, but sometimes the humidity brings the worst of the bad hair days. An easy solution is the simple, chic Low Ponytail. It's as simple as securing the ponytail at the nape of your neck and the look can be versatile. Opt for a super sleek look that can be achieved with a high gloss finishing spray or a casual, whimsical look that is achieved by gently moving the ponytail from right to left before securing at the nape of your neck.

Sarah's Pick: Braided Bun - Pull your hair into a high ponytail. Separate out a section, create a 3-strand braid and secure it with a clear elastic. Smooth the rest of the ponytail with anti-frizz cream and roll it up into a bun with the. Then take the braid and wrap it around the bun for a cool summer style. Accessories are super hot this summer and this is the perfect style to get creative.

Hottest Trend For Summer 2014 … Accessories … SS14 is the season to get creative with your hair accessories. From floral garlands to pretty headbands and scarves, make a bad hair day into a good one by adding something special.

Summer Hair Trends

It’s Memorial Day Weekend and the unofficial start of SUMMER! Oh yeah baby! I am so over cold weather and this past winter’s polar vortex. Now that the warmer weather is here, it’s time to take a look at Summer Hair Trends 2014. Taking a look at what was stomping down the runways for Spring/Summer 2014 we saw a myriad of looks. In conjunction with what was seen during FW, The Makeup Examiner reached out to Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa and asked her to weigh in on what’s hot. So, what hairstyles are truly sizzling for summer? Read on to find out!

Accessorize - SS14 is the season to get creative with your hair accessories. From floral garlands to pretty headbands and scarves, make a bad hair day into a good one by adding something special.

Beach Waves – Seen at Versace and Marc by Marc Jacobs - Definitely a big trend for summer, this laid back look is easy to do and the more randomly placed the waves are, the better. For the lazy ladies, creating this look is as easy braiding slightly damp hair (two large braids - one on each side) before you hop into bed. For those with medium and shorter lengths, you can still achieve these soft, face-framing waves. Apply a minimal amount of leave-in conditioner like Marco Anti-Frizz Leave-In Conditioner ($35) and invest in Remington’s T|Studio Silk Ceramic Multistyler ($34.99) that comes with a Curl Guide sleeve for the perfect beach waves. Keep locks looking lovely with a spritz of Shu Uemura Texture Wave ($28).

Low Ponytail – Seen at Altuzarra, Lanvin, Jason Wu - Summer is always amazing, but sometimes the humidity brings bad hair days. An easy solution is the simple, chic Low Ponytail. It’s as easy as securing the ponytail at the nape of your neck and the look can be versatile. Opt for a super sleek look that can be achieved with a high gloss finishing spray like Sexy Hair 450 Headset ($18) or a casual, whimsical look that is achieved by gently moving the ponytail from right to left before securing at the nape of your neck. Product

Tip For Blondes: Remove brassy tones from blonde with Shu Uemura Art Of Hair Color Lustre ($58).

Sarah’s Picks:

Polished Waves – This is a look that celebrities are always requesting. And a simple, chic wave is definitely in style this summer. To get the look, prep your hair with a great deep conditioner, like Aussie 3Minute Miracle Shine ($5.99). The added moisture and shine is perfect to counter the extreme heat and all the salt and chlorine your hair will be exposed to this summer. The concept behind a simple wave is that the curls always wrap away from your face to open it up and look effortless. After you curl your hair, spray Aussie Mega flexible hairspray to a boar bristle/nylon brush to smooth the curls into waves.

Braided Bun – Pull your hair into a high ponytail. Separate out a section, create a 3-strand braid and secure it with a clear elastic. Smooth the rest of the ponytail with Aussie Miraculously Smooth Anti-Frizz Cream and roll it up into a bun with the Wrap Up ($12). Then take the braid and wrap it around the bun for a cool summer style.

Half-Up Top Knot – This is a super cute summer style that works with your waves, but keeps you cool! Take your hair and pull half of it up with the Half-Up bun tool. Spray Aussie Sprunch hairspray to add texture to the waves.

Summer To Fall Hair Care Guide From Celebrity Stylist, Sarah Potempa

Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa Courtesy of Aussie
Happy Friday lovelies! Can you believe that we’re in the middle of August? Oh, the balmy days of summer are fading fast and we’ll soon be looking at the wonders of fall foliage. For those beautynistas that are pouting about the end of summer, The Makeup Examiner has found this amazing quote that sums up fall fabulously, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” ~Albert Camus. No one can pout when thinking of autumn in those terms or when we get beauty backup from celebrity stylist, Sarah Potempa!

The weather from August through October can be uh … unpredictable. So Sarah offers tips to combat bad hair days no matter what the weather swings our way. Grab your guy for this one, as Sarah also brings us tips for him with the integration of Aussie’s brand new Aussie Men.

Summer to Fall Hair Care

Have your hair go with the weather -- don’t fight it! Instead, use the unpredictable weather to experiment with different products and see what works best for your natural hair.

1. Try a new product! “I love the Sprunch Mousse + Leave-in Conditioner ($3.25),” says Sarah. Also, everyone can benefit from the Hair Insurance Leave-in Conditioner Spray ($3.25), which protects hair from the elements.

2. Swimming in chlorine and saltwater can damage your hair and even tear away at the strands. Sarah recommends putting in a little conditioner before going into the water. Any conditioner will work, but she loves Miraculously Smooth or Moist conditioners ($3.25 each).

-When your hair is a little damp, coat it with conditioner and brush or comb it through. Throw it into a braid or bun and when you come out of the water, your hair will be silky and easy to run your fingers through.

-The conditioner will almost act like a styling product, and once your hair air-dries, it will be smooth and soft.

Summer to Fall Hair Style

“I like creating a look that is undone and messy, but with one element of your look that is still sleek and polished,” says Sarah.

1. Try a messy braid, but keep your bangs sleek. Pull your hair into a smooth braided topknot for a look that is professional, but fun.

2. Ponytails can also be a fun way to experiment with different styles depending on what mood you’re in.

-Try one that is slick and high by using Miraculously Smooth Gel ($3.25) to tame hair.

-As an alternative, keep your ponytail messy and textured with some Sprunch Spray ($3.25).

Guys Guide to Getting Clean

If you’re active and on the go, you can shower everyday but you don’t need to shampoo your hair. Use a little bit of shampoo to clean your SCALP and not your hair -- don’t glop it on! You don’t want to strip your hair of moisture.

1. Use the Deep Clean Shampoo or Daily Clean Shampoo ($5.94 each) to get a deep clean.

-Don’t forget about the back of your head and around the ears!

-Massage the whole scalp to stimulate blood flow, which then stimulates hair growth.

2. The Daily Clean 2N1 ($5.94) allows you to clean the scalp and get rid of residue, but also provides the benefits of conditioning. You get soft, conditioned hair for less work!

-Using a conditioner adds more weight to your hair so it will be less poufy and can also help condition a dry scalp.

Guys Guide to Getting Styled

The most important part of a guy’s head is the line that starts from the temples and goes around the head. This is your guideline for styling. Below that line, style down, and above that line, style up!

1. Aussie Men Maximum Hold Gel ($5.94) is a water-based gel, which will give you the hold you need while still being flexible and moldable … not crunchy! It will also evaporate throughout the day, making your hair feel lighter versus a heavy silicone-based product.

-Squirt the gel on a large flat brush or comb and evenly distribute throughout the hair.

-Take your fingers and piece it out.

2. Aussie Men Texturizing Wax ($2.97) will help enhance a great haircut.

-Take the wax between your thumb and forefinger and twist little sections of the hair to create the textured shape you want.

3. If you love product, use the gel as a base to tame the hair, then the wax to give definition.
