Insider Secrets to Great-Looking Skin for the Acne Prone

Skin conditions such as acne, acne rosacea, or merely the impact of aging affect most adults at some point in their life. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology reports that acne is the most common skin disorder in the country, affecting some 40-50 million Americans. What’s more is that around 85 percent of all people in the country will at some point in their life have acne. Add to that the additional 16 million people who are affected by the skin condition rosacea and it’s clear to see that skin problems are common. It also leads millions to search for products or treatments that will help them have great skin.

“Having great looking skin is a mystery to most people. They are just not sure what to do in order to make things better,” explains Crystal Wellman. “Some of the things they do may even work against them to make it work, even if they are using products that claim to help their skin.”

The good news is that there are things that can be done in order to improve and have great-looking skin, including these six secrets:

  1. Avoid irritating. It’s important to avoid the urge to pop, pick or otherwise irritate acne or other skin conditions. This will just make it worse. While you may want to squeeze that pimple, you are better off leaving it be.
  2. Be gentle. Always use gentle products that will not be abrasive or dry the skin out. Be gentle when rubbing the face to clean it as well, being sure to avoid any vigorous scrubbing or harshness. Choose a facial cleanser that is gentle and not overly drying -- hydrated skin heals faster.
  3. Stop the clog. The make-up industry is huge, with just the sales of organic and natural beauty products expected to top $9 billion next year. This make-up may look great, but a lot of it can clog the pores, leading to acne and other skin problems. Those who wear make-up should be diligent about gently cleaning it off their face at the end of the day. Always check all makeup and skincare products for pore clogging ingredients; as long as you are using them you will never be acne free.
  4. Think protection. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting over two million people each year. Sun and even being around cigarette smoke can damage the skin and lead to premature aging of it. Make an effort to protect the skin by wearing sunscreen, a hat, or sitting in the shade.
  5. Drink water. Many people question whether or not staying hydrated helps you have great-looking skin. It is important to understand that the skin is an organ and like others it needs water to be at its best. It’s always a good idea to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  6. Get help. Not everyone is able to successfully take on their skin conditions and win all on their own. Get the help you need from a professional who can help identify and treat the problem, as well as provide information on how to avoid it in the future.

“Once you learn more about what to do and what not to do it all becomes easier to have great-looking skin,” added Wellman.

Crystal Wellman is a Master Aesthetician and also owns Ladyburg, a handcrafted bath and body store. She is also a certified acne specialist, and is also certified in the areas of oncology, dermaplane, and microdermabrasion.

Summer Skincare Solutions For Problem Skin

This Article First Appeared On TME May 2016

For those that suffer from skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, or sensitive skin, summertime can bring a set of very unique problems. Any skin condition can make us feel unattractive and while those with skin conditions such as acne may feel self-conscious, society general knows what those bumps are. The same cannot be said for skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Despite that over 30 million Americans suffer from the aforementioned skin disorders, many people don’t have a clue about the rough, inflamed and sometimes blistering skin patches that occur during an eczema or psoriasis flare up. To help us understand more about our skin and tackle the unique summertime challenges of eczematous and psoriasis skin, TME turned to Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch.

Called an “Expert Derm” by Allure and a “Beauty Guru” by Marie Clare, Dr. Hirsch is a frequently quoted expert in the fields of cosmetic and laser dermatology. Due to her unique expertise in the areas of skin care development and laser-skin interactions, Dr. Hirsch is highly sought after as an expert. Dr. Hirsch is the author of several articles and book chapters on the subject of injectable neurotoxins and other dermal fillers. McGraw-Hill released her most recent textbook, “Aesthetic Regional Rejuvenation”.

TME: What causes dry skin?

Dr. Ranella Hirsch: There are a multitude of causes in addition to some people having a genetic predisposition. Contributing factors can include the weather, humidity, bathing habits, and using skincare products that are too harsh or any combination of these.

TME: What’s the difference between severely dry skin and eczema or psoriasis?

Dr. Hirsch: There is some overlap in symptoms but generally eczema refers to a hereditary condition of dry skin known to wax and wane. For some people there are also certain allergic tendencies along with it.

TME: Summer brings skin-baring clothes. For those of us that suffer with skin issues, what can we do to prepare our skin for the summer?

Dr. Hirsch: Prevention is key. Think about sun protection appropriate to your level of activity, so as an example, look for something labeled for an active person if you will be outside in the heat. With other conditions, such as dry or oily skin, think about getting ahead of the curve. Look for products that help keep dry skin well hydrated, [look for] products that are specifically formulated for extremely dry, compromised skin.  For oily skin, look for products in a gel form that are labeled as mattifying.

TME: For those of us with severely dry skin or eczema, is it possible to “overdo it” with the moisturizer?

Dr. Hirsch: Interesting question! I suppose it would be theoretically possible to use SO much of something SO heavy that you could get break outs, but it would be difficult. As a general rule, best practice with dry skin is leaving the skin damp and then applying a product to seal in the moisture.

TME: Shaving and summer go hand-in-hand and shaving can exacerbate existing skin issues. What’s the best way for us to approach shaving?

Dr. Hirsch: Shaving brings with it both good and potential for challenges so it’s helpful to get it right. When done properly, on well-lubricated legs, which have had time for the hair to soften, it is a great form of exfoliation. In fact, a great beauty trick is to shave as a way to prep for applying self-tanner. However, shaving dry skin can cause it to become very irritated especially in the delicate bikini area.

TME: What things do you recommend that we avoid during the summer?

Dr. Hirsch: Well, I am a dermatologist so the most appropriate answer is too much sun! Not saying it needs to be avoided, just respected though.

TME: Once we achieve a healthy state for our skin, how do we maintain this throughout the warmer months?

Dr. Hirsch: Maintenance is key. Once you get your skin into a good place, look for skincare that supports where you want to stay. Avoid picking, scratching, and too much sun.

Note: A very special thank you to Dr. Hirsch for her time and wisdom!

Beauty Products To Try This Weekend

Did you enjoy our week-long organization series? We hope that you did. Now you can treat yourself to some "me time" and a few awesome new products! We gotta share a little back story -- There was a point in time that our schedules got busy -- real busy -- and a day at the spa wasn't an option. It was a time factor. So we got into the habit of doing "at home" mini spa days and then even that became a time issue. Well, you can only go at full speed for just so long until something's gotta give. And for us, when that something gave, we decided it was tome to go back to making self-care a top priority. Now, self-care is not a one-size-fits-all and what works for us may not work for everyone. But we're fairly confident that a mini-spa day could do nothing but good for all involved. So take an hour, or two, this weekend and try out a few of these products!

For Your Face:

Two amazing brands that just came onto our radar -- W!NK Spa and I Dew Care. Since our "me time" is so coveted we don't play. When it's time to relax and really chill, we reach for W!NK Spa Calm CBD Hydrating Mask. It's scented with refreshing cucumber and in 15 minutes we have gloriously moisturized skin.

I Dew Care just launched three new wash-off face masks and there's one for whatever your skincare needs are. We kind of tend to get multiple types of masks so that we're always prepared for whatever our skin needs. The I Dew Care Ice Cream Collection sells as an pack of three Mini Scoops or individually. Included in the collection are Cake My Day, Berry Groovy, and Matcha Mood. Each targeting a specific need!

For Your Lips:

Jeffree Star Velour Lip Scrub - Recently, one of our best friends brought us this lip scrub. And, never has "seeing is believing" been more true with Jeffree Star Velour Lip Scrub. It's one of the best scrubs that we've ever tried and there are tons of different flavors! We used the scrub and followed up with the mask below for a perfect pout!

KNC Beauty All Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask is a set of three insanely rejuvenating masks! Each sheet is infused with collagen and hyaluronic acid to leave your pout plump. This in conjunction with mega moisturizing rose flower oil, cherry extract and vitamin E kicked our winter lips to the curb!

For Your Hair:

Rich Argan Color Protect Therapy Mask is just one more product from the RICH brand that we love! This nourishing mask offers intense hydration with Argan oil -- is free of sulphates and parabens, and offers UV and heat protection -- which is just what we needed after a brutal winter!

A collection that recently dropped on the market is the Aveeno Rose Water & Chamomile Blend Collection and is fast becoming a fav. The Collection consists of Aveeno Rose Water & Chamomile Blend Shampoo, Conditioner and Dry Shampoo all of which contain a gorgeous blend of rose water and chamomile that is gentle on the scalp and smells delicious. Bonus is the price point of $8.99 each!

For Your Body:

Golden Door Bamboo Body Scrub is pretty new to the market. There is a reason why we love GD! And this body scrub reaffirms our love! It's a lavish blend of rich butters & skin loving oils that leave the skin smooth, soft and stunning!

For Your Feet:

To round out your "mini spay day" give your feet some love. For us, the go-to products have got to be Footlogix Exfoliating Foot File followed with Sole Solution Foot Treatment by NuSkin. The combination of these two products absolutely does the trick! And of course you need some polish for those tootsies.

We're loving Gabriel Cosmetics Ephemeral Beauty Collection! This collection for Spring 2019 features 5 on-trend shades (each available individually too) in long-lasting, easy to apply, 10-free formulations!

8 Winter Skin Saving Products To Try Now

Right about now, we’ve had it with Winter 2019! With spring not arriving until March 20, and genuinely warm weather weeks later, we all still have a bit of bitter cold to endure. Oh and that cold… what it does to our skin! From our fabulous faces to our tootsies -- even when our skin isn’t exposed to the elements -- it just seems as if winter sucks the moisture from everything. Yes, now is a good time to share a few skin saving finds and a great time to try them!

Usually around the beginning of January, our hands are showing some serious winter damage. It’s weird… we have super dry skin on the palms of our hands! Our answer to the uncomfortable (and ugly) problem is Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Touch Hand Cream ($15). This hand cream is the best we’ve found this season! It has the same luscious scent as Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream, is fast absorbing, and highly nourishing. Plus, selenium-rich Brazil Nut fuels protein enzymes to help keep cuticles and nails strong.

How about our faces? It feels as if there are times when we simply cannot win against the elements. Not enough moisture and massive dry, flaky skin. Too much moisturizer and we have an oil slick going on. We have found that the answer lies within listening to our skin. There are days when we need more moisture and days when we need less. Our go-to this winter has been Baré Alchemy Serum ($90). With four different formulas, we’ve found it super easy to grab the level of care that we need on any given day.

On the subject of our faces, we have a year-round remedy mask that keeps our skin balanced Winter or Summer… Chantecaille Jasmine and Lily Healing Mask ($84)! Let’s start with the fact that Chantecaille is a cruelty-free brand and we could go on about how much we love Chantecaille’s philosophies, but let us tell you about this skin saving mask. It was specifically designed for distressed skin! It smells like a bit of Heaven and taking five minutes to nourish your skin with the Chantecaille Jasmine and Lily Healing Mask feels like Heaven! Definitely a year-round must-have!

Our pucker seems to have it’s own problems during the winter and by the looks of everyone in around town, we're not the only ones. We solve this problem with twice weekly “lip scrub” sessions using ECOLIPS Lip Scrub in Mint ($19.99). ECOLIPS is Organic and Fair Trade Certified packed with essential oils that nourish winter ravaged lips. We follow this up with L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm ($12) and we have tubes of this stuff everywhere! L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm is also Organic and Fair Trade Certified. And both ECOLIPS and L’Occitane donate proceeds to charities!

Just like our chapped, problematic lips our feet are well… ugh! We're tough on our tootsies no matter what time of year, but the winter does quite a number on our feet. We work, really work at keeping them looking “sandal” ready. Hey, if we get the opportunity to go somewhere warm, we are so out of here! We, digress. For us, the go-to products have got to be Footlogix Exfoliating Foot File ($17) followed with Epcoh Sole Solution Foot Treatment by NuSkin ($30). The combination of these two products absolutely does the trick!

Rounding out our go-to winter weather products is a completely new discovery. Sebamed Moisturizing Body Lotion ($19.95) has a convenient pump and offers this amazingly long-lasting moisture for all over. We have very sensitive skin and a lot of body lotions cause us problems. So this is one that’s great for sensitive skin. Sebamed's body lotion is recommended for normal as well as problematic skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. You can use it after bathing or showering to effectively lock in moisture and hydration all day long.

Pro Tip: Ease Up On The Hot Water! While a hot shower may feel amazing on a cold winter day, that hot water is stealing hydration from your skin. Skin’s oils actually melt away under that hot water, add soap to mix and what you’re left with is dry, irritated skin. Opt for warm water and a short shower.

Recovery For Your Beauty Routine

Woohoo it's going to be 50 degrees today, breakout that bikini baby! Hmmm... thinking about that for a moment, you may want to hold off and take care of your skin. After the arctic blast from the polar vortex, our hair and skin might be left a little worse for the wear. But we have some recovery products that will have your skin and hair looking absolutely stunning.

BANISH THE HAT HAIR: As you probably quickly realized last week, suffering in the name of good hair is just not worth it. After donning a beanie and dealing with flat, hat hair you can give those locks a makeover and be prepared for the next polar vortex! We have come to swear by the VOLOOM Volumizing Iron ($129.99). Hats are no match for the damage-free, locked-in volume you can achieve. The secret is in the patented plates – which gently build lasting structure into the under-layers of the hair, lifting the top layers up and away from the scalp. In only a few minutes (and without damage) hair is volumized and ready to brave the cold... or whatever life swings your way.

TLC, tender loving conditioner: You’ve battled hat hair, but all that cold air and dry heat has done major damage to your locks. Treat it to a little TLC, without any of the hassle. Because The évolis Professional Treatment Mask ($40) dries to a candy like hard shell when applied to dry hair, you can leave it on overnight without fear of it ruining your silk pillowcase. When you wake up, rinse out for hair that is smooth as silk with improved texture, manageability and shine thanks to ingredients like Baobab, Rosa Multiflora and Sanguidorba Officinalis.

WARM UP Your Beauty Routine: Channel warm weather vibes with these NEW spring beauty launches from Gabriel Cosmetics and Zuzu Luxe! Gabriel Cosmetics and Zuzu Luxe have created a line of professional-quality products that are not only cruelty-free, but also vegan, all-natural and gluten-free!
