Top Holiday Hair Tips From Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for "corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience, be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.
  2. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken's new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!
  3. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!
  4. Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass, which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.
  5. Brunette Beauty: To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or ColorExtend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.

Haircolor Trends For Fall and Winter 2015 with Tracey Cunningham

Celebrity haircolor trends are being reimagined for the Fall/Winter 2015 season with new takes on old favorites. As the weather turns cooler, haircolor grows warmer with trends like sombre and Babylights amplifying the natural color on blondes, brunettes and redheads alike. Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares the inside scoop on the trends she is using on her own celebrity clients this season to help guide you when talking to your colorist at your next salon appointment.

Fall/Winter 2015 Trend #1: Sombre

“Low-maintenance color has been a popular trend recently and has now been expanded with sombre, a much more subtle and blended take on ombre. Sombre is a softer, more wearable look that is flatting on everyone, even those with darker hair like Jessica Biel. Redken’s NEW Chromatics Mocha shades help to create a rich base color that can be toned and refreshed with the NEW Shades EQ Gloss natural warm shades like Milk Tea and Cream Soda.”

 Fall/Winter 2015 Trend #2: Babylights

“The popularity of the Spring/Summer Babylights trend has gained momentum, especially with brunette clients who are realizing that highlights are not just for blondes. Natural, untouched hair is always lighter around the hairline, which is essentially the Babylights technique. By softening the hairline with Blonde Idol Blue Oil Lightening System oil lightener from the Professional Haircolor Collection, clients with darker haircolor like Lily Aldridge can easily transition their summer-highlighted hair to something more natural that complements fall colors.”

 Fall/Winter 2015 Trend #3: Lightened Red

“Redheads are embracing a softer color this fall, with vibrant reds like Emma Stone adding subtle blonde highlights to create an understated contrast. To create the blonde dimension while toning and refreshing Emma’s hair, Redken Shades EQ is my go-to for creating this universally flattering look.”

At your next salon appointment, leave the chair looking and feeling like a celebrity by asking your colorist about Tracey’s trends. To continue to protect your haircolor after your service, Tracey recommends using Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare or Blonde Idol Haircare to seal in color and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine. Visit Redken to find a salon, book your next appointment or buy genuine Redken products.

Blonding Trend At Forefront of Tracey Cunningham's S/S '15 Trends

Before Kim K dropped her major blonde ambition, Tracey Cunningham had already predicted the Blonding Trend! Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend which means spring is just around the corner. With that comes the desire to spring clean and “lighten” our diets, our unwanted baggage and now, our haircolor.

Looking ahead to Spring/Summer 2015 haircolor trends, Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist with a lengthy list of Hollywood starlets, reveals her inside scoop on the blonding trend that we are seeing on A-list stars, blonde and brunette alike. Chat with your colorist about how to incorporate Tracey’s trends.

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #1: Babylights Blondes
“It is all about going blonde this season, whether or not you consider yourself a natural blonde. A cool blonde like Gwyneth Paltrow, who has a gorgeous all-over color, can easily be elevated to another level by creating babylights, which has been my go-to blonding technique for many years that mimics the sun-kissed tones your hair took on as a child. Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol Base Breakers allow me to experiment with warm blondes like Charlize Theron by enhancing the undertones without taking away from the existing blonde shade.”

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #2: Brightened Brunettes
“So many of my brunette clients believe that blonde highlights are off-limits but it is in fact the opposite; highlights on a brunette create a gorgeous lift! With Jessica Biel who is a darker shade, I created a balayage effect using the Blond Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream on the ends. A wildly popular trend on the opposite end of the spectrum is a rich monochromatic look which is ideal for brunettes like Julia Louis-Dreyfus who want one solid color instead of dual tones. I love Redken’s NEW Chromatics Ultra Rich to get that monochromatic, rich-looking color with great coverage.”

Spring/Summer 2015 Trend #3: Rich Red
“Deep, strong reds like Emma Stone are here to stay, both on and off the red carpet, with blondes like Kate Bosworth even making the transition to red! Redken’s NEW Carmin’R shades, featured in Redken Chromatics, Shades EQ Cream and Color Fusion, give me the versatility to customize red hues for all skintones and create everything from a rich cool ruby to a vibrant copper.”

No matter your natural shade, leave the salon chair looking and feeling like a celebrity by asking your colorist about Tracey’s above trend tips. To continue to protect your haircolor after your service, Tracey recommends using Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare or Blonde Idol Haircare to seal in colour and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.

Tracey Cunningham Golden Highlights and the Golden Globes

At the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, the awards that were given out were not the only gold stealing the spotlight. No matter their natural color, A-list stars ranging from Jennifer Lopez to Chrissy Teigen to Jennifer Aniston flaunted lightened hair and discreet, golden highlights.

Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist helped Amy Poehler, Kate Beckinsale and Dakota Johnson among many other stars, prepare for the awards with Redken color and shares with us her secrets below.

Amy Poehler: Tracey applied Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol Blue Oil Lightening System oil lightener (coming to Redken salons this March) to achieve a customized lightened shade that adds depth and incorporates the babylights trend that mimics the sun-kissed tones that hair took on during childhood. To ensure Amy’s color would shine onstage, Tracey finished with Shades EQ Gloss, an ammonia-free, no-lift formula that acts as a glaze, color refresher and color corrector.

Kate Beckinsale: To revitalize Kate’s color and achieve ultimate coverage with natural reflects, Tracey applied Redken Cover Fusion, a low ammonia, 100% coverage color cream that gives hair a rich blend of copper and gold tones while adding density and fullness. For subtle highlights and added depth that would further enhance Kate’s updo, Tracey used Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream Color from the Professional Haircolor Collection.

Dakota Johnson: To revitalize Dakota’s rich near-violet locks, Tracey applied Redken’s NEW Shades EQ Cream with Carmin’R (launched in Redken salons this January), a new introduction to the existing Redken Color portfolio that features a revolutionary dye molecule and  provides a long-lasting red with a truer to red tone color for up to 40 shampoos*. For a healthy shine, Tracey finished with Shades EQ Gloss.

To continue to protect the haircolor after their service, Tracey recommends that her clients use Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare to seal in color and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.
