Bliss Announces Partnership with PETA

Bliss announced yesterday, July 23, its partnership with PETA and making it into the Beauty Without Bunnies Cruelty-Free Program. In February of this year, Bliss underwent a total brand relaunch. The relaunch brought about new products and 100% cruelty-free, paraben-free skin and body care formulas -- which are now officially certified as cruelty-free by PETA standards.

The brand’s philosophies are that inner happiness unlocks outer beauty and recognizes that creating efficacious, yet cruelty-free products is essential to its consumer's happiness. The Beauty Without Bunnies program is a valued resource for thoughtful shoppers to identify brands backed by PETA standards, as these brands have committed to not test on animals nor sell in markets where animal testing is required by local law and regulations.

"As a brand we are passionate about how our products are made and where the ingredients come from. Vowing to be cruelty free was an indisputable choice when relaunching, as it is of the utmost importance to not only our consumers, but our company and brand values," says CEO, Meri Baregamian. "Shoppers can find comfort in the fact that Bliss formulas are 100% cruelty-free and free of other harmful ingredients without sacrificing the same high-quality and innovation that they have come to expect, know, and love from the brand."

As a part of the rebrand, Bliss is also proud to offer a collection of vegan skin and body care products as well as a new 100% cruelty-free spa menu debuting in spring 2019, guaranteed to keep your skin – and furry friends – 100% happy. Blue Lagoon Iceland Offers Spa Experience At Home

In a 2015 post, Marian Krueger of Travel Shop Girl describes her experience visiting the Blue Lagoon Spa, and oh my, that experience will leave anyone with a strong desire to jet off on the next plane to Iceland. Yes, I know… not many us have that luxury but that is no excuse not to incorporate a little spa time for yourself right at home. I received a few brand NEW offerings from Blue Lagoon Iceland that are so amazing that I had to share my own rejuvenating at-home spa experience with TME readers!

Feet are not always the prettiest part of our anatomy and can often get overlooked in our fast-paced lives. But, did you know that our feet are a key center for rejuvenation, health, and an overall sense of well-being? Think about it. After you get a pedicure don’t you feel renewed? Aside from the mind and body benefits of giving our tootsies a little attention, Spring 2018 is here and very soon we’re going to be baring our feet for all to see.

So it’s time to give them some attention and with two brand NEW products from Blue Lagoon Iceland, pretty feet are a only a few minutes away. I actually recommend taking some “me” time and making that at-home pedi an at-home spa experience. I think that readers know that we get a lot of products to try and it is no accident when I sing the praises of a specific item. For spring, Blue Lagoon Iceland offers Blue Lagoon Foot Scrub ($59) and Blue Lagoon Foot and Leg Lotion ($59).

Let’s start with the Blue Lagoon Foot Scrub… the smell is a bit of heaven and will instantly relax you, as well as leave you feeling like you’re at Blue Lagoon Iceland! Blue Lagoon Foot Scrub is made with mineral salt and rosemary leaf. So not only does it smell amazing, the scrub stimulates circulation and leaves your feet feeling smooth and revived. It can be applied to damp or dry skin and works effectively rather quickly, but you’ll want to take your time and enjoy!

When you finish getting those tootsies smooth, polished and lovely, applying the Blue Lagoon Foot and Leg Lotion is an absolute must. This Arnica (a natural muscle relaxer) infused foot and leg lotion calms and refreshes your legs and feet and can be used throughout the day for a pick-me-up! I received this two weeks ago and it is now a staple in my beauty regimen.

Quick Tip: While you’re taking care of your feet, take a moment to do a quick facemask. I highly recommend checking out Gifts of Nature Mask Trio by Blue Lagoon Iceland ($259). The collection includes Blue Lagoon’s Signature Masks -- Lava Scrub Mask, Silica Mask and Algae Mask -- that is a complete set for whatever your skin needs.

You can find all of Blue Lagoon Iceland skin-loving offerings online at Blue Lagoon! Blue Lagoon Iceland products are dermatologically tested, paraben free and NOT tested on animals.

After digging out of yet another snowfall, we are officially so over WINTER 2015! And speaking of “officially,” Spring 2015 begins tomorrow, March 20th … of course you’d never know it with today’s weather! Chapped lips, watering eyes, skin that feels like a crocodile … enough already! We are completely ready to leave the winter behind, but the same cannot be said for our lips, nails, skin … you get the picture. So kicking into high-gear Team TME went on an expedition to find the go-to, must-have beauty products that will get you ready for the warmer weather ahead … and do so in style.

Hair Care: Rejuvenating our locks after the cold and brutal winter, and managing our hair, can be quite the endeavor. We found Davines’ MOMO collection and Redken’s Frizz to be the perfect products for getting our hair back into shape and for maintaining it throughout the often frizz producing weather of Spring and Summer.

  • Davines MOMO Shampoo ($25) and Conditioner ($29) are ideal for dry or dehydrated hair. Formulated with Cartucciaru Melon from Paceco, the collection leaves hair smelling delicious and offers up amazing hydration without weighing hair down. Major bonus – Davines is a cruelty free, organic and sustainable brand that belongs to 1% Forthe Planet!
  • To maintain those lovely locks, Redken Frizz Dismiss collection offers the first-ever Frizz Protection Factor (FPF) with 4 levels of smoothing and humidity protection for all hair types -- from fine to coarse. The Redken Frizz Dismiss collection ranges from $18-$25 and includes all of the haircare items that you will need to weather the weather!

Skin Care: Look … we all know that your skin is nowhere near ready for those beautiful shoulder-to-pins revealing ensembles.

  • For an all over body rejuvenation, we pick Daily Concepts MY Zen Konjac Sponge ($18), which is 100% natural and comes in three selections -- Charcoal, Pure and Turmeric, and Daily Concepts is a vegan brand! Use your new Daily Concepts Sponge with Sebamed’s Spa Shower ($14.95) for a relaxing, skin-loving shower experience. Sebamed Spa Shower is soap and alkali-free, perfect for sensitive skin, and smells absolutely delicious.
  • Out of the shower, our pick is L’Occitane’s NEW Almond Velvet Youthful Body Serum ($52) and Almond Velvet Youthful Body Balm ($60). These ultra-concentrated formulas combine a powerful complex of natural almond ingredients infused with 2% Vitamin C, helping to get your winter skin ready for a sexy spring!

Now that you have your hair, body, and face all prepped you need the hot products for Spring 2015! Oh, and these will take you through Summer 2015 too!

Multi Pot in Conch ($18.35 – Limited Edition) can be used on eyes, lips, and cheeks. Bonus: Gabriel Cosmetics is a cruelty-free brand!
  • Stila Cosmetics, another cruelty-free brand, has lunched two amazing brow products! Courtesy of “it” girl Cara Delevingne, “boy brows” are in. But, you gotta keep ‘em tame and pretty. Stila Stay All Day Brow Gel ($34) comes in five shades and a dual-ended brush that lets you contour and define your brows. If you’re more of a pencil person, the Stay All Day Brow Pencil ($21) has a micro-point for a precise application.

  • Team TME looked at a lot of lacquer for our Spring 2015 Must Haves. When we found Londontown, we stopped looking. After all, when you find a brand so deliciously good why bother looking anywhere else? The Londontown Nail Lakur Spring 2015 Collection ($16 – each), which includes eight cream colors and four matching glitters, offers sophisticated hues that are on-trend, luxurious, highly pigmented and 5-free!

ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream Review

ECRU New York introduced a line of hair care products, late in 2013, infused with Acacia Protein Collagen and Silk Proteins, one product being ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream. BB Cream for hair? Being ever the skeptic, I simply rolled my eyes at yet another catch-phrase product. After all, what was this “Acacia Collagen” and what was so awe-inspiring about using it on my hair?

Putting my investigator’s cap, I read up on Acacia Collagen. I found out that Acacia Collagen is an extract from the Acacia Seyal tree, which is native to Africa. Apparently this botanical ingredient is used in high-grade anti-aging skincare products due to its moisture retentive properties.

ECRU is utilizing this extract, versus animal proteins, in the brand’s patented Acacia Protein Collagen Hair Care line as to offer the same moisture retention and damage prevention as high-end skincare products. As I’ve previously written, ECRU New York is an eco-friendly brand, which does not test on animals and is committed to sustainability. So, catch phrase aside I tested out ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream.

What did ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream ($30) do for my hair? Well, first off this is a multi-purpose product (LOVE) that serves as a leave-in conditioner, heat protectent and styling product! A dime-sized amount of product was plenty for my long hair (More LOVE).

Acacia Protein BB Cream didn’t weigh my hair down, allowed for quick styling when taking my naturally curly hair to straight, and left my hair in amazing condition. For those that have damaged hair, Acacia Protein BB Cream is must-have styling product and for those that don’t it’s a great preventative.

ECRU New York Acacia Protein Collection includes:
Acacia Protein Shampoo ($25)
Acacia Protein Conditioner ($25)
Acacia BB Cream ($30)
Acacia Protein Masque ($25)
Acacia Protein Oil ($30)

ECRU New York Acacia Protein BB Cream and the entire Acacia Protein Collection can be found online at ECRU and select retail locations globally!

Purple Prairie Botanicals Review

Going with the theory that everything happens for a reason, The Makeup Examiner offers up the story, and review, of Purple PrairieBotanicals. As with almost every interesting health or beauty product that TME has come across, necessity (frustration) has been the mother of invention. This is where we find a young mother of three who became frustrated with skin care products that were not up to par. Happening upon an article in an organic gardening magazine, she decided to cook up a batch of soap and in 2000 Purple Prairie Botanicals was born.

Based in Minnesota, Purple Prairie Botanicals is a homegrown company committed to using the finest organic ingredients, sustainability, fair trade practices and, of course, no animal testing. Purple Prairie are proud signers of the Skin Deep Cosmetics Act, Leaping Bunny, PETA and qualify for the National Green Pages directory. Are you in love yet?

Purple Prairie products are free of:
  • Petroleum
  • Parabens
  • Synthetic Dyes
  • Artificial Preservatives
  • Animal Ingredients
  • Detergents
  • Sulfates
  • GMOs
  • Gluten

Getting to the products, TME begins with Gardener's Carrot Salve ($5.99), which smells delicious and is made with calendula and chamomile, which protect before and after gardening. But, Gardener's Carrot Salve is not limited to just gardening. It’s an excellent product to sooth and heal dry feet.

Next up is Deet Free Bug Spray ($7.99), which is full of skin-loving natural ingredients, has a lovely scent (unlike many other bug sprays) and is effective! It’s also fabulous for soothing bug bites should you forget to apply prior to taking to the great outdoors. The special blend of essential oils and plant extracts in a clean witch hazel and water base that’s safe for all ages.

Rounding out the review for Purple Prairie is a look at the brand’s SunStick Solid Balm SPF 30 ($9.99).  Containing 20% micronized zinc oxide that scatters the suns harmful UVA and UVB rays, this sun balm is also filled will skin-loving products like organic cocoa and shea butters. Aside from being an effective sun protectent, it’s unscented, 100% natural, biodegradable and environmentally safe.

Along with the above, Purple Prairie sent over several of their amazing 100% Natural Soaps ($3.99). With amazingnous like Lemongrass Oatmeal Soap, Gardener's Carrot Soap, Peppermint & Oatmeal Soap Bar and Eucalyptus Lemon Soap Bar … you need to try at least one. Purple Prairie Botanicals are available online at Purple Prairie and select retail locations.

Lovely Nail Lacquers from 100 Percent Pure

Before The Makeup Examiner shares with readers about the 100% Pure Cosmetics Nail Polish Collection, TME has to give a shout out to the brand for making it to the 2014 CEW Eco Beauty Awards finals! For those unfamiliar with the CEW Beauty Awards, they are the equivalent of the Oscars for the beauty industry.

In December, 100% Pure Cosmetics added to an already extensive line of cosmetics with its launch of nail polishes. The nail polish line consists of 20 shades, a topcoat and a basecoat, all of which are free from formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, camphor, and formaldehyde resin.

The Makeup Examiner reviewed four shades from the line that included:
  • Pie – A deep and rich red
  • Kiss – A fun and sexy hot pink
  • 12:51 – A light, kiss of peachy pink
  • Innocence- A perfect baby pink

The color hues were a perfect sampling for the line, as they ranged from intense red to light pink. This gave an excellent view of color delivery and wearability of the various shades. All four shades do require two coats, but they go on like glass and are long-lasting! Although TME has not tried 100% Pure Horsetail Base Coat, it contains the herb, horsetail (also called Shavegrass), which is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and astringent properties.

100% Pure Cosmetics is a vegan and organic beauty brand, offers free shipping on all orders over $50, and gives free samples with every order. 100% Pure Nail Polishes ($12) are available at 100% Pure and select retail locations.

Eco-Armour Has More To Offer For 2014

The Makeup Examiner introduced readers to the organic, eco-friendly beauty brand Eco-Amour in July 2013. If you missed it, you can check out the article about Eco-Armour’s staple products -- “Eco-Armour Organic Beauty Review”. Founded by Robert and Zoe Benzinger in 2011, with one product, Eco-Armour Shaving Foam, this intriguing and dynamic couple expanded the brand’s offering with Botanical Insect Repellent and Moisturizer (an absolute must-have for summer), and recently introduced three new, amazing products!

First up for review is a beauty bargain at its absolute best, Eco-Armour Mango Lip Butter ($5). Yes you read the price correctly. Mango Lip Butter is a 100% botanical lip balm with great cushion that moisturizes the driest lips, penetrates quickly with no sticky feel and provides SPF15. Eco-Armour Mango Lip Butter contains non-GMO soybean oil, cocoa and shea butter with almond and apricot oils, has a yummy light citrus flavor and is the best lip balm that The Makeup Examiner has come across in a very long time.

Next up is Eco-Armour Indoor calming spray (4oz $12.50), which is designed to calm our busy minds and that it does indeed. As with other Eco-Armour products, Indoor is a multi-purpose beauty spray. It can be spritzed on pulse points for an instant mental chill, on your linens to promote a restful night’s sleep, or even in your office when your boss is being … uh … cranky. The blend of witch hazel distillate with organic castile soap and aloe vera gives the product both cleansing and healing properties. And a blend of lavender, bergamot, vanilla and tea tree essential oils create the relaxing scent.

Last but not least, because TME saved her favorite for last, is Eco-Armour Advanced Botanical Serum (0.5 oz $79), which again is a multi-purpose product that can be used on everything from those annoying fine lines to dry cuticles and dry skin to boo-boos. There are actually 18 different skin healing and beautifying benefits listed on the brand’s website! Advanced Botanical Serum contains a natural SPF15, mango butter, grapeseed oil, hempseed oil, hazelnut oil, and lots of other skin-loving ingredients. TME was thrilled that she was able to use the serum on everything, from dry cracked heels to dark under eye circles, with amazing results. Eco-Armour Advanced Botanical Serum is a must-have for winter skincare and is currently on special for $39!

The last ingredient listed on Eco-Armour products is love. Normally, The Makeup Examiner is not a sappy person, but after several conversations with Eco-Armour Co-founders Robert and Zoe Benzinger, TME can guarantee that these amazing people definitely add love into their products. If you’re seeking beauty products that are organic, vegan and eco-friendly plus are multi-purpose, The Makeup Examiner highly recommends checking out Eco-Armour. Eco-Armour is a member of 1% for the Planet and their products can be found on the Eco-Armour website.

Acquarella Nails Introduces New Colors For F/W Collection

Acquarella, the premiere water-based nail polish brand, announced today Nov. 5, the launch of their long awaited Fall/Winter collection. For those unfamiliar with the brand, Acquarella offers an alternative to traditional nail lacquers with their non-toxic formula.

Founded in 2004, Acquarella introduced an alternative not only to nail polishes, but to nail care as well. There is a regimen to been done when one switches from a traditional nail polish to Acquarella’s offerings, and readers can learn about this in The Makeup Examiner’s productreview.

Now for the stunning and on-trend shades from the Acquarella Fall/Winter collection!

  • Covert: An Army green with a hint of shimmer
  • Prancer: A rich burgundy metallic that is absolutely perfect for the holidays.
  • Obscure: A deep brown/black crème that is a warm toasty brown, which is perfect for the winter.
  • La Luna: A translucent grey/silver metallic that reminds The Makeup Examiner of the festive season ahead.
The new shades bring Acquarella’s color count up to 44 diverse shades. Acquarella has also introduced “The Color Selector,” which suggests a sister formula for each shade. For example, if you love “La Luna,” but would like a crème or shimmer versus a metallic, the brand suggests “Celestial” and this goes for all of Acquarella’s shades. Acquarella Water Colors ($16) are available at Acquarella and select retail locations.

Consumer watchdog says cosmetics brands ‘lying to customers about animal testing

Choice, a consumer watchdog organization based in Australia, is claiming that quite a few major cosmetic companies are lying to customers, reported the Sydney Morning Herald on May 5. Choice claims cosmetic companies are testing products on animals without telling consumers.

The accused are going as far as to place a rabbit on their labels. The rabbit has become an International symbol for cruelty-free products, but not all bunnies are made the same. Peta and Go Cruelty Free have the most recognizable symbols and only companies that have been reviewed by these organizations may use their cruelty-free bunny symbols.

Brands accused by Choice of “lying to customers about animal testing”:

Avon, Biotherm, Bobbi Brown, Bumble and Bumble, Chanel, Carefree, Chapstick, Clairol, Clean and Clear, Clinique, Clearasil, Dove, Donna Karan, Elizabeth Arden, Estée Lauder, Garnier, Giorgio Armani, Head & Shoulders, Helena Rubinstein, Herbal Essences, Jurlique, Kerastase, Kiehl's, La Mer, L'Oreal, L'Occitane, Lancôme, M.A.C, Max Factor, Maybelline, Michael Kors, Missoni, Nair, Neutrogena, Olay, Old Spice, Pantene, Ponds, Redken, Revlon, Shiseido, SK-II, Sunsilk, Vee, and Vidal Sassoon.

How did Choice arrive at this conclusion? Choice examined the websites of 55 cosmetics brands and found 40 percent were making claims, either on their own sites or those of their parent companies, that no animal testing was being performed. In conjunction with researching brand’s websites, Choice sent undercover shoppers into stores and had the shoppers ask sales staff if products were tested on animals, staff for Lancôme and Dior told the undercover shoppers that their products were not tested on animals.
This does not necessarily mean that Lancôme and Dior were attempting to hide anything from consumers; it could be an issue of uninformed sales staff. Choice claims companies, which had previously stopped testing on animals, had gone back to this practice to break into the booming Chinese market. China requires animal testing for all beauty and personal products. So, if it’s “Made In China,” it’s tested on animals.

What can consumers who to purchase cruelty-free products do? Research! Both Go Cruelty Free and Peta have comprehensive lists of cruelty-free companies on their websites. To find cruelty-free products, visit Go Cruelty Free and Peta

Facefacts by Lori Product Review

Happy Friday lovelies! The Makeup Examiner has been hunting for products that hit the trifecta of organic, cruelty-free and eco-friendly. I can often find products that hit one-of-three, but sometimes these products have either a less than desirable result or the price point is beyond what most people are willing to spend.

Professional makeup artist and Facefacts by Lori founder, Lori Hoffman was seeking to create a cosmetics line that hit that trifecta. Facefacts began with Naturally Elegant Lipsticks ($14.99) in eight shades, moved on to integrate LipFacts Lipliners ($10.99) in six shades and Lori has just introduced BodyFacts body soaps, wash and lotions to the Facefacts line.

The Makeup Examiner was sent three Lipfacts Naturally Elegant lipsticks (Made in The U.S.A) and three LipFacts Lipliners. Lipstick shades; Almond Cream, Soft Autumn and Plum Brandy are classic hues for anytime of the year. Naturally Elegant lipsticks have a fantastic smooth, creamy consistency and great pigmentation. The lipsticks were both long-lasting and very hydrating. The same long-lasting wear and smooth consitency can be said for LipFacts Lipliners!

LipFacts Lipliners shades; Plum, Mocha and Praline are versatile shades that make mixing a matching fun. All Facefacts by Lori packaging is recyclable and the products are produced with wind power. Color is derived from mineral pigments and the lip products are packed with nourishing ingredients like jojoba seed oil, shea butter, and vitamin E. Facefacts are paraben free, petrolatum free, lake and lead free, and of course, Facefacts products are never tested on animals.

Facefacts by Lori will soon be introducing CheekFacts … The Makeup Examiner can’t wait! Facefacts are available at the brand’s website
